kevingastreich Posted June 11, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 11, 2019 Hi, We just got our Alaska cruise cabin assignment and it is Oosterdam 4181. It is an aft facing cabin. We have never had an aft facing cabin. I know a lot people seem to like these. Any tips on what we can expect? Thanks.
CATandSQUID Posted June 11, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 11, 2019 We love the adt facing rooms, the verehdah is longer, partially covered. I attached pics of the deck. Here is a link to the way the room looked in 2016. http://halfacts.com/vista-class/4181-Oosterdam/
kevingastreich Posted June 11, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted June 11, 2019 Thanks! There is an old thread on this but it is over ten years old so thank you for the current info!
MMsteffey Posted June 12, 2019 #4 Share Posted June 12, 2019 I have seen discussion on another travel advice site that sometimes a small amount of soot may fall on the chairs and railings. The staff is aware of this and will strive to keep the deck clean. Just look before your drape your white shirt on a chair. Have a great cruise. Homosassa Posted June 12, 2019 #6 Share Posted June 12, 2019 If you hit any rough seas, you will feel motion.
TAD2005 Posted June 12, 2019 #7 Share Posted June 12, 2019 We had cabin 4174 on the Oosterdam, Aft, and we loved it. Huge balcony, longer cabin, and no problems with soot from the stacks. Compared to the aft cabins on decks above 4, when you lean on your balcony railing, all you see is the beautiful ship's prop wash and wake. On higher decks, you are looking down on other balconies and the tops of people's heads. No issues with rough seas. When the ship is climbing over 15 - 20 ft swells, you do get a little bit of shimmy or shudder. But in normal seas, it is quiet and calm.
madera1 Posted June 13, 2019 #8 Share Posted June 13, 2019 We have been on several cruises in aft facing rooms and only one time did we experience lots of motion but we were in a terrible storm. We have 5190 booked on the Oosterdam for our July Alaska trip.

We had that one booked for our 2017 Alaska cruise, and managed to get it again for our Sept 1 Alaska cruise this year. The balcony is flat-out AMAZING and almost ridiculously massive. Just be careful not to lock yourself out on the balcony! We accidentally did that during our Hubbard Glacier day and had to yell to one of the other balconies, so that they could get the attention of our steward, lol.
