Holland America newbies questions please......

My wife and I just booked the Pacific coastal aboard the Kottingsdam (sp?) repositioning for next April.  Being HA virgins,  we're used to Princess mostly,  we wanted to explore the newer Holland vessels and it looks like this ship is one of them.  Having never sailed this line before we have some questions.  I enjoy smoking cigars occationally while on vacations and would like to know the smoking policy as it pertains to this....?   Am I allowed to be up on deck with the cigarette smokers to enjoy one...?  Is there in interior smoking lounge anywhere....?  Also,  it looks like this ship has a nice looking spa with tiled heated loungers.....do they sell day use passes or maybe a deal for the entire cruise for us to use this....?   I know there will be more questions as we figure this all out so I thank you in advance for your help.......:)  What things about HA and/or this ship should we "not miss".....?

This is from the HAL website:

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah.

The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted:

  • Sea View (Retreat) Bar/Pool on starboard side only. On Prinsendam, Koningsdam, and Nieuw Statendam, smoking is allowed on the port side only
  • Sun Bar on Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam
  • Sports Deck forward and aft of Crow's Nest on starboard side on Maasdam, Veendam, Volendam, Zaandam, Rotterdam and Amsterdam
  • Oak Room on Noordam only, including cigar and pipe smoking
  • Onboard Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam the casinos are non-smoking. Onboard all other Holland America Line ships, smoking is allowed in the casinos except for non-smoking days.

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms and suites but not on verandahs or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas.

Any guest who smokes inside staterooms or on verandahs in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation and will risk being removed from the ship for repeated violations.

If the full cruise passes are not sold out, they will offer day passes for sale.

The full cruise pass is the better deal though IMO.  I’ve normally found there is a discount on embarkation day.  Make the spa visit a priority on embarkation day and book it 🙂

We liked the K'dam when we sailed her to Norway. We stopped by the spa on our walk around to see the ship (1st time on this class) and we booked DW for the week. They are quite happy to attempt to upsell you while showing you all of their amenities but the spa is pretty nice. Enjoy.

You can get a spa pass for the whole duration of your cruise. It includes use of the heated loungers, sauna and hydrotherapy pool.  I recommend making that your first stop when you get on the ship as these passes sell out quickly.  Well worth it IMO!

Yes to both.  Single day is about $40 per person, so if you think you'll use it more than a couple of times the pass for the whole cruise is definitely worth it.  The spa will be giving tours on embarkation day before muster drill - as mentioned, it's a good idea to head straight there, see the thermal suite, and sign up then and there.
