SempreMare Posted August 19, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 19, 2019 (edited) News flash: You just need to pack a sports bra and shorts in hot, dry. Alaska An observation based on four days in the Kenai: There is zero correlation between: Temperatures I see reported in ANY weather app vs actual temperatures as measured by the lacrosse scientific thermometer System with a display in my cabin on the Kenai ?? I have a lot of experience with temperatures in the 90s, and this feels like temperatures in the 90s. Yet the weather service is reporting 70s The tour guide said the actual felt temperature is so much hotter because of the angle of the sun in Alaska But it hurts my brain to see the publicized temperature 30° lower than the actual temperature. AKStafford Posted August 19, 2019 #3 Share Posted August 19, 2019 Except today its in the low 60's with a chilly wind blowing... But yes, it feels hotter here in the summer for the same temperature because the angle of sun means more direction radiation is hitting your body. Donald Posted August 19, 2019 #4 Share Posted August 19, 2019 (edited) Kenai Fjord today hit a high of 64f. Cloudy with a cold wind blowing - and lots of smoke from the forest fires. No shorts here. Lots of parkas and foul weather gear. Edited August 19, 2019 by Donald

SempreMare Posted August 20, 2019 Author #6 Share Posted August 20, 2019 Ha! @bottom-dragger great reply. Looks like my last day was right before it turned cooler. Or, you are all in that alternate reality created by the Alaska tourism industry to lure unsuspecting Texans seeking to escape the heat 🤨. Ok seriously, It’s amazing any glaciers are still there. Almost to the day, 24 years ago, I hiked 2 weeks in the Kenai and Chugach Mountains and the high some days got to near 80 and some on our team did break a sweat. Lows were sometimes near 40. I recall pitching a tent on a glacier and needing to bundle up really tight that night. How times have changed. One of the gals that hiked with us then, now says Houston has become a hostile environment as regards the weather and she just cannot wait until we colonize Mars. Rare geoherb Posted August 20, 2019 #8 Share Posted August 20, 2019 I took back-to-back cruises in late June/early July this year. I needed several layers on the northbound cruise. By the time the ship headed back, though, the weather warmed up to where I was in a T-shirt and shorts in all the ports.

I wished I had shorts and more short sleeve tees with me on a few past trips. I am packing for next week RT from Vancouver so the packing challenge is on..... SempreMare Posted August 24, 2019 Author #10 Share Posted August 24, 2019 I ran out of warm weather clothes for the first 7 days. Juneau & Ketchikan are gloriously cool and rainy. My Juno boat captain said that this is only the second day of the summer where it’s been that cold & rainy. I told him I was thrilled-otherwise packing all of that gear would’ve been for nothing. And besides, it makes for great vampire weather! Like Tom Cruise in a cape could jump out any moment.
SempreMare Posted August 24, 2019 Author #11 Share Posted August 24, 2019 Ok now I am officially an Alaskan popsicle. I heard something, noticed the time, And realized I could catch a video of the Coast Guard pilot transfer. Ran to to the balcony and filmed for 10 min in cold winds. So cool! SempreMare Posted September 1, 2019 Author #12 Share Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) In Vancouver, it's beach weather, absolutely gorgeous; less felt heat than much of Alaska. And at the ? Art Gallery, a movie is being filmed... Edited September 1, 2019 by SempreMare
