Staying 2 nights in Venice before Oct 6 cruise on the Star . Is there a way to get transport from hotel directly to the ship or can you only get to the port enterance and then walk.

However, be forewarned that the port is large and the drop-off point for Alilaguna may still involve a bit of a walk to the actual ship. I'm not sure whether water taxis are allowed to take you right round to the actual ship or not.

No need to take a cab. There is a tram from P. Roma to the port.  Cost 1-2 €.

Some ships will have a shuttle from the port entrance to the ship.  See Tom’s Port Guides or Italy for visitors/Venice for greater detail.

The OP wants to be dropped off closer than the port entrance.
