jmadams Posted October 8, 2019 #1 Share Posted October 8, 2019 Has anyone ever been able to see any bioluminescent sea critters (jellyfish, algae)? Would the lights from the ship prevent us from seeing anything?

rkacruiser Posted October 9, 2019 #4 Share Posted October 9, 2019 Yes, once. Do not know what type of sea creature(s) it was, but there was a faint glow that was visible. This was in the Pacific Ocean in tropical waters.
bbwex Posted October 12, 2019 #5 Share Posted October 12, 2019 One thing you have to realize. It is hard to notice anything as the ship is moving along. Whales might be on the surface sometimes, but the seas are typically rough enough to make seeing them difficult unless they jump or are blowing out their blowholes. Someone might see it and yell, but the chance that you will even pick it out at a distance is not great if you are not looking in exactly the right spot. Seeing some bioluminescent creature as you are moving is not terribly likely, and how much time are you going to be looking straight down? These creatures tend to be in deeper water. I don't put jellyfish in that category, and they are sometimes visible in ports. If you have a veranda near the bow, there is some chance that you might see some dolphins jumping alongside the ship, and sometimes if you look down you might see a hammerhead shark alongside the ship. I have seen flying fish alongside on several occasions.
ilikeanswers Posted October 13, 2019 #6 Share Posted October 13, 2019 Unfortunately ship lights can obscure a lot of bioluminescence but also your eyes need to adjust to be able to see bioluminescence and again the ship lights stop this from happening. Unless you get lucky and hit a big mass of Noctiluca Scintillans chances are you won't be able to spot much from the ship, not to mention most bioluminescenent creatures live deep in the ocean and rarely come to the surface.
