Voom Internet

When it says, "1 Device" - does it mean one device (ever) for the duration of the cruise? Or is it something where you can log out of one device and then log in with another? I like have access on both my phone and my tablet, but it's unlikely I'd use both at the same time. It feels a bit much to pay for 2 devices.

Interesting experience tonight on Majesty.  Gloom stopped working altogether for several hours.  It was pretty bad today leading up to this, something wasn't right.  Dial up is faster.  CC page took 1-2 minutes to load.

From around 5pm to 8ish there was no internet at all.  TV service was not impacted.  I visited the Gloom specialist who confirmed there was no internet.  His display on his laptop showed it just stopped.  Full speed to zero the graph literally just dropped to zero a few hours ago.  Even his onboard phone was dead, just spinning as he showed it to me.  "Sorry, my ship phone doesn't even work, no idea when it might come back".  Odd, ships phones were out?

MLB fans were losing their minds.  The baseball game wasn't televised and fanatics were letting it be known they were not happy.  Not pretty.  TV sports was the TNF football game and cricket.  With no internet, no one knew how the ALCS was progressing.

One man was having a meltdown at the Schooner Bar "This is America.  How can you not show America's past time on TV?  IT'S THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!"  Ummm.... the World Series hasn't started yet, but okay.  "People can watch football anytime, this is the World Series!"  he went on and on.  Those poor bartenders didn't know how to respond.  "Do you want a drink?".

Around 10pm internet was back but slow.  Yikes, Yankees were losing.  Dude from bar is not going to be happy.  MLB app isn't refreshing any more.  Phone connected for a few seconds.  Oh wait, now the ALCS is postponed?  What happened?  It was 3 to 1 last update...

Was just on Oasis of the Seas, which charged a$$tronomical amounts for Internet

—$125 ($17 a day) for basic package (emails)
—$160 (over $20 a day) for “streaming package)

I started with “basic”—

I couldn’t even load a Wikipedia article about the next port.

So I upgraded to the “Streaming”— which was only 2% better. Don’t even think of streaming even a 20 second cat video off YouTube. Good luck.

so essentially for the equivalent of a $650 A MONTH RATE, speeds slower than the beeping netzero dialup I used when I was 7.

Welcome to CC.

Your Voom performance experience was probably not typical, but cost was.

You may not be able to make video calls with Surf.   Or if you can, it will be choppy and frequently pause.

Page loads can be highly affected by latency if the page requires lots of data calls.  Some page load almost everything on one request.  Others require the user's browser to sent each data element.  Amazon does this.  There must be 50 - 100 data calls to load a page.  If each call take 1/2 second (500 ms ping), you get LONG load times.

Yeah, onboard prices for internet is pretty bad, especially for the 24 hour pass.

I'm seeing "regular" surf and stream prices pre-cruise are now hovering at 15.99/day for 1 device.  I remember only 4 years ago, I got it at 8.99/day surf and stream.  There has been no improvement to the speed since then.

Expect long lags (200ms ping for O3B systems, 600ms pings for non-O3B systems) at the best of times.  For this reason, i tell people not to bother with surf only because its only further throttled.

So glad to come across this thread.  I was just looking at the beverage package prices for our June 2022 sailing, and wondering if I should add Voom (I think that’s the correct name) for an additional $10 a day.

We do prefer to disconnect completely, but with older parents (one set traveling with us; one set not) it might be worth one of us having connectivity to the outside world.
