On more than one occasion, posters have mentioned renting an AirBnB in NYC. Besides it being illegal, we warn against it because we don’t want anyone to be be a victim because since it’s illegal, only unscrupulous renters would offer an apt.

Recently a tourist paid for a rental in a public housing project. AKA Known as “The Projects”. 1E930869-F601-4569-A63D-B5F2D19C12B4.thumb.png.a8835fd35cd823d5dd3932d7064c070f.png

Even worse than this, some Airbnb listings have turned out to be abandoned buildings or buildings that  didn't even exist.  Last week Airbnb announced they were embarking on a project that would attempt to actually verify the accuracy of their listings. Of course even if successful that won't change the fact that Airbnb is still generally illegal in NYC.

A: Airbnb won't actually do that

B: As mentioned, these folks were lucky, they actually had a place to stay.  Many folks show up to find the address doesn't exist or the key doesn't work

C : If someone will rent you an apartment illegally, what else isn't right with the unit?  Smoke Detectors?  Safe exit?  Secure locks?

Where was the property located? Why were they happy? Because it was much cheaper?

They were happy because of value for what they paid . Both also were originally from nyc so they knew neighborhoods which helps.

Before booking any Apartment, condo or house from any of the online sort term rental sites. Do research. Read reviews. P.S Airbnb is not illegal in NYC. There are restrictions. They can not rent multiple apartments or condos at the same address.

In 2016 NY State passed a law that makes  it  illegal in most buildings for an apartment to be rented out for less than 30 days unless the permanent tenant is residing in the apartment at the same time.

So the reality is that many if not most AirBnB  rentals in NY are illegal.

Yes as stated above,  Airbnb is illegal.

There are certain buildings that are hotel/apartments for short term rentals. These are not rented through Airbnb.

It's a whole lot tighter than that!

You can't rent an apartment on Airbnb in ANY building in NYC that has 3 or more units unless the owner is present during your stay, and you have access to all rooms, so if there is an emergency, you can access all emergency exits.

It has been estimated that over 90% of airbnb (and similar) listings in Manhattan are illegal.
