My son and his friend will be landing at LGA on May 8 at about 7pm  what would be your recommendation on getting from LGA to Midtown/Times Square area.  Neither of them have mass transit experience but they do want to do things on the cheaper side.   They will be taking a cruise on the OASIS on the 10th so recommendations on how to get there would also be appreciated.  They would like to stop at Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken on there way to the ship Sunday morning.   After the cruise they will fly out of EWR so that should be a simple taxi/uber ride I would think?

Once they decide on a hotel, folks can provide more detailed suggestions for these more budget transportation options.  There are several New Yorkers who are very knowledgeable about the subway options if you can provide a specific hotel destination.

Carlos Bakery can be reached by taking PATH ($2.75)from 32nd & 6th (elevator accessible entrance on the west side of Broadway just north of 32nd St).  The Bakery is a 5+ minute walk (with luggage of course).  Cape Liberty can be reached by returning to the Hoboken Station and taking the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Bayonne train to 34th St in Bayonne ($2.25/pp) and calling Uber or Lyft into the port ($10-12).

Be sure to read about the current Carlos Bakery experience in Hoboken.  It’s apparently not what it used to be.

It is doable - for lightly packed travelers (22" or 25" rollerboards/spinners & backpacks, etc.) by taking the Q70 SBS bus (with luggage racks) from LGA terminals for an easy subway connection ("F" express line) - especially during off-peak hours - into Manhattan.  There's another SBS bus services to Harlem/upper Manhattan & then free subway transfer to go downtown to Times Square & elsewhere.  $2.75 per ride/free transfer using a MTA MetroCard, purchased at airport terminal's kiosk (SBS ride required getting a paid receipt as proof before boarding) plus $1 fee for a new MetroCard (can be shared to pay fares for up to 4 riders).

Escalators & elevators are usually available and working, but there will be stairs & steps, not recommended for those with mobility issues.  The trip is about 45 to 60 minutes on average as long as there are no delays or congestions, just like riding a taxi, Uber or car services - and, which airline terminal at LGA, etc.

If neither of them have mass transit experience than this might not be the best first time to try it out-- especially with luggage. Either a taxi or Uber will be about $50 into midtown.

I agree that Hoboken can be easily reached via PATH train-- very straight forward with no transfers. That would be the place to save money.

I would just Uber from Carlo's to the pier as its quick and cheap. And as has been mentioned above-- this isn't a serious bakery anymore. Its more like a theme park. If they want a really good bakery there are plenty to choose from in New York that are of a VASTLY higher quality than Carlo's in Hoboken.

LaG still undergoing heavy construction. Follow the signage to taxi or shared rides. It’s different depending on terminal.

I also suggest getting the Lyft app if you don’t have it. They are offering  25% off new user special for five rides. Up to $10 per ride. Plus you can link your Delta points.
