Onboard Spending....

Recommended Posts

Just saw a very interesting survey online about their spending while onboard the cruise ship.  This is after the cruise fare, taxes fees & port charges, & gratuities.

The 9 optional expenses are shown, in order of the surveyed responses of numbers & percentage of peoples' spending

There's over a thousand responses to the survey, but the second column is my own guess/observation the number of passengers who spent $ while onboard, & third column is our ave approx spending in the past few cruises.

Surveyed            My Guess           My Own Spending

9.  Wifi                              0%                       20%                     $0

8.  Arcade                         0%                       2%                       $0

7.  Spa                               1%                       2%                       $0

6.  Photos                         1%                       5%                       $0

5.  Specialty Dining         2%                       15%                     $0

4.  Shopping                     6%                       15%                     $100

3.  Casino                          14%                     15%                     $100

2.  Drinks & Packages     22%                     50%                     $0

1.  Excursions                  53%                     50%                     $300

Comments:

Based on my observations, there's probably way more people using Wifi onboard than those willing to admit it.  We now have grown adult kids, so no more spending on arcade.  Casino spending varies.  We do not drink alcohol, but depends on the cruise, it could be 40% - 80%.  I scuba dive, so most of the costs goes there...

There's no right or wrong answers & this is not a scientific surveys, just interesting to see.

So copy & paste , and share your own observations...

Are we talking about only what is spent while onboard, or are you including pre-cruise purchases?

If you're only talking about onboard, our last cruise we spent about $70. One photo and a few souvenirs. Everything else (drinks, dining, tours) was purchased pre-cruise.

On what cruise line(s) is this survey for?  And for what part of the world?  I would imagine both of those make a big difference, especially the part of the world.

Agree, know for example some 12nite Repo Cruises many items much cheaper then a 7 nite to EC on a newer ship... But me I tip, spend some on WiFi and save all rest my $$$ to pay for another Cruise

We have 0 on board spending and have had it for the last four years. Only pre cruise spending is gratuities. When they start charging, what we consider a fair price we'll go back to spending like we did previously. When they cut cost, so did we. We do spend money in some ports for such things as tours, lunch, drinks and a souvenir if we visit a new port.
