slidergirl Posted April 6, 2023 Author #7276 Share Posted April 6, 2023 I've used my bandana (really just bandana-sized scarves) as my head covering going into mosques and churches. As I love visiting churches and mosques wherever I go, having that bandana on my bag comes in handy! Melody - you woke up to the snow, I woke up to amazing, clear, skies and sun!! Nice to see for a change. It should be a great day for all the tourist skiers. I might dig out a little piece of my patio and put my lounge chair out and just vegetate. I was planning on going down the the Valley to get my rain shell, but since I have the extra week now between finishing work and going to Alaska, I'll just wait. I did book one excursion (not through the ship) in Sitka to go to the bear rehabilitation sanctuary. I'm a sucker for animal rehabilitation places. There's enough time after that to go visit the historical park. OOTD: another sweatpant & Tshirt day. If I end up outside, I'll put on my down sweater...

Meeting DD for brunch outdoors. Gosh, Melody, it doesn’t sound like an outdoor eggs hunt will be happening where you live🥲. Lois, you are so right, everyone packs differently and I didn’t mean to be critical. I was really just explaining why it takes me longer to pack. Traveling with a roll aboard began when we first started flying stand by. We quickly learned that checking a bag complicated our ability to make last minute flight changes when necessary. So I guess you could say I do it out of necessity. I’m so used to it that even when we purchase tickets we use our roll aboards . Only difference is that we often check them. Hoping the weather doesn’t impact your tours. Sounds like you plan to layer as needed. Hey Sharon, I didn't think you were being critical😀.....I was saying sometimes I think about trying to change my packing style but never end up doing it. awhfy Posted April 6, 2023 #7278 Share Posted April 6, 2023 Made it to dermatology appt. Man, people just don’t know how to drive anymore, then you throw in 4-5” of snow & they really go nuts. We had about an inch of ice under the snow. I was coming up to an intersection & saw a guy barreling down the hill to the light. I put on my flashers, guy behind me backed off. Yup guy went flying thru the red light & slammed into the wall (totaled his BMW), wasn’t hurt. All he had to do was slow down a tad & he’d still have a car (instead he doesn’t have a car & got a hefty ticket for unsafe driving). I had 3 biopsies & 25 freezes, sigh

AND, we have the winter potholes to contend with, too, Not those puny 3" deep 12" round ones, but ones as wide as your car and pop your tires and bend your frame kind of potholes. I have the bad ones on my way to work memorized! Regarding Easter Egg hunts - someone had a perverse idea of not dye-ing the eggs and just putting them white in the snow!!
awhfy Posted April 6, 2023 #7281 Share Posted April 6, 2023 Lois, unfortunately that’s more the norm than not. Kat, I feel ya, potholes are insane. I expect to be stopped for drink driving (by trying to avoid potholes)
Rare cruisemom42 Posted April 7, 2023 #7282 Share Posted April 7, 2023 Lois, have fun on your cruise! You will need a scarf if you want to enter a mosque - they will provide something but far better to bring your own. Remember Haghia Sofya is now also considered a mosque. For normal walking around you won’t need it. The weather has been pretty atrocious so far in Japan, unfortunately. Nonstop rain for the last three days. Luckily Kochi (yesterday’s port) will be repeated next week on the second leg. Today is the first of two days in Osaka. Many people are headed to Kyoto on expensive tours. It’s not going to be pleasant. I’ve been to Kyoto twice, so I decided to see if it clears up later and, if it does, I can see something in Osaka. Tomorrow the weather should finally be nicer: partly sunny at least, but cooler which is fine with me! Even though the temps have been mild (highs in the mid to high 60’s), it hasn’t seemed cold. I am wearing the heck out of my Brooklyns and mainly 3/4 sleeve tees. With a rain jacket I’m plenty warm…⛩️☔️ Kat- mostly I recall baseball caps in Alaska along with very outdoorsy/athletic clothes, hiking boots or sneakers, etc. Like Lois, I’m not much of a hat person but you wear them well!

Since you like Brooklyns, there is a bermuda version now, if you do shorts, I thought it kind of funny that someone over on the HAL thread brought up the 7-11 and egg salad sandwiches! I wonder what would make the chicken katsu sandwich from the run-of-the-mill breaded and fried chicken sandwich? With the clothing you mentioned above for Alaska, I guess I'll just pick out some of my everyday clothes and have at it. I do think I'll take my trail shoes and trail runners and not my boots. I'm not doing anything that I would think could not be done with my 2 choices. Plus, a little less space taken up in my bag since I can wear my black "dress" boots when I travel rather than the hiking boots.
MrToblerone Posted April 7, 2023 #7284 Share Posted April 7, 2023 Happy Easter! Kat I have been wearing a lot of hats since my chemo and find my caps the best ,I just purchased a new white bucket cap for the cruise in July ,it’s too big but hopefully will fit once my hair grows back. 🙂 Cynthia I am glad you are feeling better ,that ice cream looked interesting, maybe I’ll try one in Sicily.I do love the ash covered soft cheeses in France. I hope you are continuing to recover well Melody, your grand dog watching TV is so funny. Looking forward to reading about your cruise Lois and your 60th birthday cruise Purple , is that ok to call you Purple ?I see others have. We are now in Autumn ,we feel cheated as we had such a bad summer . Rare Lois R Posted April 7, 2023 #7286 Share Posted April 7, 2023 Good morning, Melissa....yes CONGRATS on that new grandbaby!😀 Well, I decided to do a bunch of packing yesterday so today just have to finish up. Have to get my jewelry together.. I normally bring a neckwire with multiple pendants and of course a choice of earrings🙂but I have a couple of tops that look better with a longer necklace so will bring a couple of them as well.
awhfy Posted April 7, 2023 #7287 Share Posted April 7, 2023 Melissa on your large hat. Get a piece of weatherstripping (for doors), cut it to fit inside the bucket hat. Another bonus it makes a comfy headband as well as holding hat on. Congrats on the new grand!! I bought a pair of Brooklyns, fabulous Athleta sale going on beautiful sunrise this morning. First is facing East, other is facing south. Melody

Rare Lois R Posted April 7, 2023 #7290 Share Posted April 7, 2023 Just finished up packing.....whewww LOL.......I re did a couple of things and decided to pack one pair of black crop pants. They are cargo style and don't weigh a lot and Melody, they are from Chico's🙂 And I moved some things from my carry on into the checked bag and so the carry on is a bit lighter as well. Got all the jewelry done and the meds too. I have a small pill box that has a quilted cover that I use for every cruise. And I got all my other stuff done too.....cosmetics, toiletries, etc......So really finished. Now just have to get through the rest of the day!....my flight leaves tomorrow for Atlanta (late morning) and then my long haul leaves at 4:30pm. I am in business Class on the long one so will take advantage of the Delta Lounge for the afternoon😀

Did you pre-order your dinner? I loved the extra choices on the pre-order form. Safe flights and safe cruising! I also use that weatherstripping on hats! If I need just a light touch, I'll use the fuzzy side of Velcro - put it in between the hat and the hatband.

If I could, I'd take 3 hats with me, not counting baseball hat and toque. But, alas, my good hats don't scrunch up and I don't have the money to buy a good travel hatbox. On the Brooklyns - the bermudas are on that Athleta sale. I may cruise up to Main St and see if I like them. I just remember I didn't like the fabric & fit of the pants. No, I did not pre-order dinner and I just looked at the booking and I don't see anywhere to click to pre-order anything. One of the fields says "Order Special Items" but you have to do that before the 24 hour point. And I don't need anything special LOL Whatever they serve in Business Class will be just fine🙂

Surprised you didn't get one. Delta One food has improved anyway. I had some of the best baked fish on Delta when did SLC-CDG last year.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted April 8, 2023 #7297 Share Posted April 8, 2023 Finally a nice-ish weather day in Osaka. And cherry blossoms!! I was on a private tour with 7 other CCers, we saw Osaka castle and the venerable Shitennoji Temple. We also visited a food market. I had a wagyu beef skewer (cooked in front of me), some delicious freshly fried thin strips of sweet potato, and the ice cream flavor du jour is red bean paste!

Lois, I hope your trip is going smoothly . Safe travels and a lovely cruise! Nice sunrise pictures, Melody! I hope your biopsies turn out well! Happy belated birthday, Christie! slidergirl Posted April 8, 2023 Author #7300 Share Posted April 8, 2023 Nice pics, Cynthia! And, thanks for the food photos - you know I'm a sucker for food porn 😉 I don't do red meat if I can help it, but if someone gave me a stick of wagyu I could manage to eat it. With all that fat in the meat, how does it taste compared to normal cow? I love anything sweet potato - those look like some nice slices. And, nice that some cherry blossoms were still around for you! Got some nice parting gifts from owners yesterday who left today - some nice caviar (we had talked before about how we both like caviar on potato chips!) and a nice selection of balsamic vinegars. I have 1 owner and 1 guest family in-house right now, so it's going to be major quiet. OOTD: black jeans and my black & white striped long sleeve T. Pink high tops will be making an appearance for the first time this season. Just another birthday at work - I don't remember having it off in ages! But, at 69 (yikes!!), not much partying to be done 😹 You know you live in a small town when your pharmacist calls to wish a HB...
