ga_pa_2004 Posted July 19, 2020 #1 Share Posted July 19, 2020 Hi all, I'm wondering where are docked (or moored) all the empty cruise ships? Greetings from Switzerland ! ga_pa_2004

Rare Hlitner Posted July 21, 2020 #7 Share Posted July 21, 2020 As others have said, they are scattered around the world in relatively safe anchorages (not docked). Docking generally costs real money (docking fees, 24 hour security, etc) but anchoring is essentially free. We have looked around the world using AIS (an automated system that tracks nearly every commercial vessel in the world) and can see dozens of ships anchored in the area between Florida and the Bahamas as well as a couple of dozen ships anchored off of Manila (mentioned in a previous post). Other ships are off of Cyprus and some are off of various places in Northern Europe. We should also mention that there are still thousands of crew members literally trapped on these vessels. Many of them are no longer being paid and simply exist (with some passenger comforts) as the cruise lines work at finding ways to get them off and home. It is telling that even after 4 months of shut-down the cruise lines cannot even get all their crew ashore. Perhaps a more interesting question is "what will happen to all these ships?" Most are in warm/hot layup which means they are still staffed with adequate engineering and other crew necessary to properly maintain the vessel. This costs money as does the continuing debt service for most of these ships. CCL continues to bleed around $1 Billion a month and other lines also continue to lose significant money every day these ships are not earning revenue. Unless operations can resume by the end of the year it is difficult to imagine any cruise line surviving without the protection of bankruptcy. The only savior we can see for the industry is a safe/effective vaccine and that may well not happen in time to bail-out the cruise industry.
