Getaway Aft Facing Balcony

What's the good, the bad and the ugly about these cabins.

OK...I know the good-large balcony, no wind

It's the bad and the ugly.  DH is concerned about noise and rumbling from the engine and also that it will be rocky.  Somewhere I heard that things from above (the buffet) can fly down.  And I think I heard about soot.

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks

The good:

-Big balcony

-The view of the wake

-Less traffic by your door, so quieter

-Less wave and wind movement than front or middle of the ship

-No more engine noise than any other place on the ship

The bad:

-Possible noise from Spice H2O

-We only saw soot once in 8 cruises in an aft room

-When pulling in and out of port the side thrusters can make the back shimmy(shake)

The ugly:

-Nothing that we have ever encountered

There are many variables.

Balcony depth depends on which deck you are on.

Balcony width depends on which stateroom you are in on that deck.

Noise/bass from above (Spice H2O) could be a problem if you are too high (closing and sealing the balcony door helps to keep the noise out).

Noise from the wake bothers some while others enjoy the sound.

You won't hear the engine but might feel an occasional shimmy from the azipods.

Soot has many variables because nobody can predict if/when it will fall. Personally, I wouldn't call it a problem based on my experiences. A dot here or there is no big deal, IMO.

It's unlikely that anything will fall onto your balcony from above.

Ship movement never really bothers me no matter where I stay so I can't comment one way or the other.

  • 2 weeks later...

We were on the 14 deck and had no issues.   Amazing views and felt very private.  We didn't hear anything from Spice H2O, nor did we feel any shimmying or shaking.  As Skeeter195 stated, hallway is very quiet.

We stayed in an aft Balcony on Breakaway once and really enjoyed it. It was quite high (12 I think) There are some occasional noises and vibrations but nothing really too bad. The only real negative we had was it seemed so far removed from everything...It was a long walk even to the rear elevators.

We are scheduled to sail on the Getaway in October.  We have an aft balcony cabin which we really love.  The only thing I do is book on a deck that is between 2 decks with cabins, no public spaces.  That view of the wake is mesmerizing and we enjoy having our coffee there every morning before starting the day.

Thanks for the replies.  DH thinks it's a waste of money (I'm the one who does the bookings and controls just about all our finances) but I had  "a good couple of days" at the casino, so I think I'll go for it.

The walk is no problem....we embrace the exercise.

Go for it.  It is absolutely wonderful.  Agree with many of the previous posters

our experiences

Try for a deck with cabins above and below.

Quiet

Rumbling when leaving port. Doesn’t last long.

No soot for us,  Princess seems to have the soot problem.

amazing views

Didn’t mind the walk

Not sure how far it is to the casino, though.

The farther from the casino....the less the total cost of the cruise, based on past experience!

We love Aft balconies and never had a problem with soot or noise.  I could sit outside for hours.  We have an aft on deck 12 of the Getaway in October.  Can't wait!

We're on aft deck 11 for the 25th Oct. Getaway cruise.

It does cost more, but considering our October cruise in both Italy and Greece, we felt it was worth it for the view, if for nothing else.

We’re on the corner in the penthouse suite. Looks ok to me.

^ Deck 13 balcony will look like this...

...while deck 9 balcony will look like this. Could be a mirror image depending on if you are port or starboard.

NCL used to charge the same price for these but now, NCL puts the larger balconies in a different/usually more expensive category.

Excellent move.

We have been in aft balconies quite a few time (including the Hawaii trip), but one of my favourite cruise memories was sitting out on our aft balcony one night with a bottle of wine chatting and watching as we sailed past some small Greek Islands.

We've booked an aft again when we go there on the Jade next year. 🙂
