10/14 Summit Review - Celebrity Suite

I always read the cruisecritic boards before my cruises, but this will be my first post cruise review.  I don't have any pictures, menus, or specifics beyond what I'm going to write.  I didn't go into the cruise thinking I'd write a review, so I have no notes to reference.

A bit about ourselves - married couple in our late thirties traveling without our children.

Cabin Review - 7138 - Celebrity Suite:

The cabin was simply perfect.  We've never sailed in anything better than a balcony room, this was our first suite/retreat experience.  The room had contemporary decorations and was very clean.  The best part was having breakfast served to us each morning inside our cabin at the dining table.  We always have room service for breakfast regardless of room type.  Having a dining table and expanded room service menu was fantastic.  My wife loved the vanity inside the walk-in closet.  As others have mentioned, the shower curtain is definitely too long for the shower/tub combo.  I just put it outside the shower/tub so it didn't bother me during showers.  Also, the "floor" of the tub is much higher than the floor of the bathroom.  My wife is very short and had a hard time getting out of the shower without holding onto the glass partition wall.  This is our only complaint about the room.  The balcony also lacks privacy if that is important to you.  Our butler was fantastic and even called twice to ask what she could do for us.  We don't need much and spend most of our time eating, gambling, and enjoying drinks in the sun... so there was not much for our cabin butler to do for us other than bringing us breakfast.  Occasionally we had her bring us an afternoon coffee.  She also made a point to let us know that she could replenish the minibar with beer/soda free of charge, just not for the wine/alcohol bottles.

Dining Review:

Other than a couple snacks at the buffet, we exclusively ate at Luminae.  Lunch and dinner were in Luminae, except for port day when lunch was closed (we ate off the boat and had a snack at the buffet upon our return to the ship).  Before I go any further on my food review, I will warn the readers here that I am a foodie.  We enjoy dining out very much, whether a local mom & pop or a michelin starred restaurant.  What I consider to be good, many others would consider to be great.  Take my review of Lumanie with a grain of salt please.  The food in Luminae was good, not great.  It's much better than the buffet, and much better than the last main dining room experience I had on Celebrity (which I find significantly better than say RCCL or NCL main dining).  Luminae was not as good as any of the Celebrity specialty restaurants I've tried in the past (Murano being my favorite).  I will say that the one night I wasn't interested in any of the main course options, they offered me a filet that was as good as any specialty steakhouse filet I've had on a cruise.  That was very appreciated.  The presentation of the food in Luminae was excellent.  They definitely take an extra step to make sure your plate is well presented.  The service was top notch.  After two nights our waiter realized that we don't eat large quantities of food.  My wife had been ordering the vegetarian main course option as an additional appetizer, and by the third night they started making smaller app sized portions for her.  We also had lots of perfectly made coffee drinks at Cafe al Bacio (and probably a few too many cookies on the side).

Retreat & Main Pool Review:

We are pool people.  On a full capacity cruise we default to the 2nd level sundeck.  Even before covid we did not like lounging at the pool having people on both sides of us, which is why we always go straight to the upper level sundecks.  This was not a problem this time around.  The pool was basically empty; same for the solarium.  Both pools were honestly too cold for us, and we didn't use them much unfortunately.  We enjoyed the retreat sundeck very much.  The cabana style beds and loungers were very comfortable.  There is a lot of sun on the retreat deck, but it wasn't an issue to find shade when needed.  We mostly used the round day beds that have a partial sunshade, which was more than enough shade for us (remember, we are sun lovers).  For me, the best part of the Retreat sundeck was the beverage service!  We were literally the only ones there one day.  I mentioned to our server that I like fruit flavored mojitos, but don't actually want it to be very sweet.  They delivered time and time again.  I was constantly rotating between strawberry and mango mojitos, that were perfect with just the smallest hint of sweetness.  Whoever was making the drinks for the Retreat sundeck was one of the best bartenders on the ship.  Only one small complaint here... it was probably about 10am and I found myself at the Retreat sundeck while my wife was at the spa.  The waiter came by to take my drink order.  I tried for a smoothie, but was told that wasn't possible.  Then I asked for a lemonade, and was countered with a sprite.  This had zero impact on my enjoyment, but it left me wondering what the point of the Retreat is if they can't make something as simple as a smoothie happen.  We literally had smoothies as part of our room service breakfast order just two hours earlier.  A total non issue, not all things will be perfect.

Retreat Lounge - we stopped in here once, but it wasn't really our cup of tea.  I did like the self-serve fridge stocked full of cold drinks.  We stopped in there maybe two or three times in total, for no more than a minute or two at a time.

Shows/Entertainment:

We went to the comedy show the first night and I found it to be enjoyable.  We did not return for any other shows.  We just aren't really into musical shows, and isn't a reflection of the quality of entertainment.  Normally we do sit and have a drink listening to the various lounge performers, but on this cruise we really didn't do that.  I think it was because the lounges were mostly empty and something just felt off about that.

Casino:

Casino staff was great.  Dealers were friendly.  Pitt boss was friendly too.  Similar comment on lack of crowds.  It's a bit strange to gamble in an empty casino... though maybe I shouldn't have been gambling at 9am while my wife was in the spa.  The casino was relatively busy at night, considering the low passenger count.  I enjoy craps, but certainly wouldn't want to play alone.  One night there were two other gentlemen playing craps, so I decided to join.  One guy was being a jerk to the casino staff, so I decided to leave the table.  One of her staff was still learning and while he didn't make any mistakes he was a bit slow with the payouts.  The pit boss asked me why I left the next morning.  I told her that I prefer to have fun if I'm going to lose money, and that the other passenger was a buzz kill, and it had nothing to do with her staff.  She was too polite to agree with me, but her face spoke the words that her mouth held back.

Spa:

I do not care for spa treatments.  My wife loves them.  She only did one on this four night cruise.  Some sort of body scrub massage.  She enjoyed it very much, with her only complaint being the sales pitch at the end.  But that is to be expected at any spa.  One minor complaint here.  I was going to surprise my wife by booking a couples massage (since that is not something I would normally do).  The pre-cruise planner had a ton of couples options, including the body scrub massage she ended up getting.  But once on the boat, the only couples options were regular massages with different time lengths.  If we wanted the couples body scrub massage we would have had to pay for two solo prices, and they would've just done it in the couples room.  However, this was 100% a couples option to book in the pre-cruise planner and was much cheaper than paying the rate for two individuals.  I didn't push the issue or even bring it up at the spa desk.  My wife was fine enjoying the spa on her own, and I wasn't going to start my cruise by complaining.  I'm certain that had I said something, they would've found a favorable outcome.  I simply chose to stay quiet about it.

Covid:

We live in Florida.  I probably don't need to say much else.  I felt safer on this cruise than I do at my local grocery store.

This pretty much covers the bulk of our trip.  We spent more time in the room than usual, mostly because it was so nice.  When traveling without children, Celebrity is our preferred option.  The only problem I foresee is that there is no way I can go back to traveling in a regular balcony room, probably not even a mini-suite either.  I was the type of guy that first said "the room doesn't matter".  Then I got a balcony room and said "the room doesn't matter so long as you have a balcony".  Now I will say "the room totally matters if you can spend the extra money".  Our next cruise will be in March on RCCL with our two children, my mother, and my wife's parents (two connecting mini-suites and the non-connecting suite on the other side).  I probably wouldn't splurge for the full suite when sailing with my little children, but for our next adults only cruise I will certainly be looking at the celebrity suite pricing as the starting point instead of a balcony room.

Thanks for the review!  Once you sail in a suite on Celebrity it is hard to go back.  You might not enjoy the suite experience on RCCL as much when compared to Celebrity.  When you say mini-suites do you mean Junior Suite?

Yes, that sounds right!  This will be my first Junior Suite on RCCL as well.  We have a little one that will be sleeping in a pack-n-play and last time we tried to fit that in a regular balcony room it was a mess!  I look at it as a balcony room with more floor space... exactly what we need for a family cruise.

Ditto

We were on the 10/14 cruise also, in Aqua Class. In our over 30 cruises we have never received better, friendlier service. With a shade over 400 passengers on board, it felt like a charter. The crew bent over backwards to make us happy. The Abbott test was a breeze, no lines at check-in, the crew applauding us as we boarded. Pretty neat.

Wonderful review and thanks for not posting pics of your Orange juice and scrambled eggs 🤣

We were on this sailing but just in a balcony cabin.  Hands down, this was a great cruise!  Less than 400 passengers (about 340) and a fully operational cruise.  From the captain and crew all applauding us as we boarded to the exceptional service through out the ship, this truly like a private yacht.  I have never been recognized by name so frequently onboard!  Our balcony cabin did not have a tub but the glass enclosed shower was actually roomy.  Celebrity is really doing everything to make passengers feel welcomed back to sea.

Glad you enjoyed your cruise.  First celebrity suite a real treat!  We have graduated to a Royal suite now when we get a good rate!.  We typically eat in SP restaurants almost nightly on the cruise, but truly enjoy breakfast and lunch, when available in Luminae.  We aren't sun worship people, my DH has had many pre cancerous skin cancer lesions  and visits his derm every few months- so the sun deck isn't for us- but we typically have no problem finding and moving our chairs so as not to be on top of others.   I agree about the entertainment, typically the acrobatics aren't for us- and we don't like some of the cornball acts either.

Not casino people. Do they still try to lure you in for "art auctions".

We did enjoy Michael's club pre dinner and the concierge was always available to help us should we have any issues.  Most of the butlers are great, however we had one who wasn't good and as luck would have it, we had him again on another celebrity ship!

Overall, we do like the summit.  Haven't been on her since the renovation and hope to have a chance to sail on her again.  Our next Celebrity cruise will be on the Reflection, one of our favorite Celebrity ships.  Thanks for sharing!
