Current mask culture on Carnival?

Hi, I’m curious to hear what the mask culture is like on Carnival from anyone who has sailed since the august 2021 changes were made. I’m sailing on a Dec 26 sailing on Horizon.   I have read the mask policy but am wondering how strictly masks are enforced, especially when just roaming the ship indoors.

For example, is it like being on a plane where if someone sees that your nose is not covered, they are immediately going to say something?

(not trying to start any kind of discussion on covid, masks, safety, protection, personal freedoms, etc. just curious about the actual process right now.)

thanks!

I would hope that everyone would adhere to the policies in place regarding wearing your mask inside without having to be reminded.

While I despise wearing masks and will be glad when we are free of them I do understand what’s expected of me when I book the cruise.

Hopefully one day this will all be a non-issue!! 😢😢

I was on the Pride 9/12 and 10/24 sailings.  Big difference.  Some examples... On 9/12 our entire Texas Hold'Em table wore no mask except for one elderly gentleman and nobody said anything if we had a drink in front of us - but on 10/24 they enforced "sip and cover" BUT they didn't care if your mask was over your nose, just your mouth.  The mask wearing was enforced more in the dining room too.  Every night there were mask police on the 10/24 cruise outside MDR but not on 9/12.  I didn't hear any altercations about masks between cruisers on either cruise.  The more "lax" standards signs are still all around and confusing (e.g., signs outside and inside the elevators saying "MASK UP in elevator").  Enforcement seems to be evolving, but I observed many less people wearing masks inside on 9/12, or they had them on their necks.  On 10/24 much more adherence, but some of those only covered mouth.

Masks are not required everywhere indoors, only elevators, to/from tables in eating areas, showrooms, casino.  Walking around indoors is not required and you see many people not wearing them where it is not required.  In the required areas you see most everyone complying and the staff is constantly reminding everyone to do so.  Been on Mardi Gras and Panorama and thought Panorama was a bit more strict on enforcement.

When I was recently on the Miracle, I never saw any staff reminding anyone about mask wearing.  Most people wore them in the required places, but I observed many people in elevators not wearing masks.  In the theater I’d say about half the people were masked, but lots of the unmasked people had drinks in front of them and weren’t following the “sip and cover” rules.  The comedy club was packed and lots of people without masks there,  In the casino about half the people were masked.  Many of the masked people in the ship didn’t have their noses covered.  Overall, I wish the management and staff had done more reminding/policing the policy.

I am on the Pride right now. People seem to be adhering to the mask rules almost without exception, so I haven't had the opportunity to see what happens when they don't.

I went to the piano bar last night and the performer did a general reminder about the mask policy several times.

On the Breeze last week there was very good adherence to the mask policies. Every time we were on an elevator, everyone had their masks on properly. Same for buffet lines, and walking in the hallways on the public and cabin decks.

At the entrance to the buffet, a crew member reminded guests to put their mask on and provided one if the guest had forgotten their own.

Outside on the upper decks masks were not required but many people had them on anyway.

Once seated at tables for eating and drinking, the masks could be removed.

All crew members wore masks 100% of the time both inside and outside.

We didn't see any arguments or tantrums regarding masks, everyone simply complied with the requirements. It seemed that people realized the need for the mask protocols that were needed to enable cruising to happen again and were happy to conform as well as to protect themselves and others from any possible virus spread.

I wouldn't worry about it, based on our experience, which quite frankly I was amazed to see. I must admit that I did expect to see a lot more unmasked people and some protests, but we saw none of that.

On our six day Magic cruise last month we only saw masking procedures starting to get lax around the final evening. The vast majority of people were masked while indoors, and I saw several people people spoken to about moving around without masks.

We have been on Mardi Gras and Miracle since the August rules started. I think it varies by ship.  The crew did a very good job reminding people to wear masks.  Once seated in public areas, many people did remove their masks (like Grand Central Atrium on Mardi Gras) whether they were eating/drinking or not.  Crew members were very good about reminding people of the mask requirement, and there were constant announcements in the casino.  However, nothing is perfect.  I noticed that later at night, I'd find several people in the elevator (for example) without masks.  I'd simply wait for another elevator.  On both of these ships, I found it pretty  easy to just avoid crowded areas, but I typically don't go to the clubs and enclosed places like that.

I was on the Pride 10/17 - 10/24.  Very few unmasked folks anywhere but while eating and around pool areas.  Only saw a few "enforcements" several in Punchliners reminding people of the "Sip and Cover" and one in the Lido restaurant, someone walked in with the mask only over their mouth and they were told they had to cover their nose also.

We were on the Horizon 10/16 and I found that the majority of passengers were wearing their masks correctly indoors. There were of course outliers but the they were reminded by their traveling parties to put their masks on. There were announcments in the casino and in the lounges before the show to wear masks correctly. Didn't have any issues with people on elevators not wearing masks. There were staff at the entrances to the buffet to remind passengers to wear their masks.

I have cruised twice since August.  For the most part, mask wearing is strictly enforced  when entering the main dining room, Lido buffet indoor area, shops and casino.  When remaining indoors but not in these specific areas, I did not experience anyone requesting masks be worn but likely b/c indoors but not in restaurants, casino and shops, are recommended but not required.  There are signs stating masking is required in elevators, but I never saw anyone enforcing it and use in elevators was probably 75% or so without strict policing.  I didn’t attend shows/comedy club so can’t speak to those areas. Just my experience on both Vista and Breeze.  Hope this helps.

I see several people talking about masking indoors, but masking indoors is not mandatory 100% of the time. It makes me laugh every time JH posts his "walkies" and people start freaking out about people not wearing masks while walking about the ship.

Masks are NOT required, per the rules posted in the room, while walking around the ship or in any area specifically not designated as being mandatory (and those locations are clearly noted on the rules). Masks are not required while walking about the ship indoors through any hallways or common areas. On the Panorama, while playing trivia, the host noted that Ocean Plaza is not a mask mandated area - but if there was a tie breaker and someone had to approach the stage then a mask would be required. Additionally, when music was held in that area in the evenings, masks only required on the dance floor - not while sitting at your table listening.

We recently were on the Vista out of Galveston.  Most people followed the rules of wearing masks indoors.  There were many people who never, at anytime, wore a mask. I said something to 2 security officers about it once as 2 people walked right by us and they refused to say anything. I also said something to one of the officers onboard and nothing was done. I hate wearing a mask as much as anyone but the same rules should apply to all passengers. It makes me wonder about those people who never wore mask the whole cruise. If they actually had proof of a real Covid test or proof of vaccine card, not fakes. Carnival will not enforce the mask policy onboard.

Where did they pass by you at?  Masks are not required while walking around indoors only in the designated spots.  I think Carnival is doing a great job enforcing masks where their policy says are required.  You can’t expect mask enforcement in areas that are not required.

It was near the shops. From what I remember, masks were required in all areas indoors but not outside. This was stated in writing when I booked my cruise, along with having a current covid test and proof of vaccine.

It has been encouraged in all indoor areas but only required in certain areas. In the halls by the shops is not required but in the shops it is.

Most helpful post for me personally today - thank you!  👍

I got home today from a B2B Miracle cruise. Unless in the MDR, Buffet, or “eating/drinking” or outside by the pool. I’d say 99% of the cruisers wore masks.

I did a lobster excursion to Rosarita Beach, masks were required onboard the bus, but not in the restaurant.

Just off Mardi Gras from last week. The only mask enforcement is in the casino. Announcements every 15 minutes and dealers always asking to wear when you don’t have a smoke in hand or drink in hand. Other than the casino I could walk freely (if wanted to) without a mask anywhere on ship with nobody saying anything. Walk by any indoor bar and not a person with a mask on. Personally, I see no difference in being around 15-30 maskless people at the Alchemy bar vs the casino. Not sure why bars are not being enforced indoors. When walking from venue to venue I would say around 25% of people were maskless. My Horizon cruise in September was same for casino but almost everyone wore masks when walking from venue to venue.

We just got off of the Panorama on Saturday. The majority of passengers wore masks, a few didn't. I didn't hear of any 'haters' making a big deal. All of the workers wore masks. On most occasions, if I forgot to put on my mask, the only time I really heard a worker tell me to put it on was when I walked into the Lido Buffet.

Just got off the Vista and the mask are not required everywhere as some may suggest. Just recommended in some areas and enforced in a few places. Walking to from the dining room tables and around the buffet areas was gently reminded if someone walked in without one. However in the comedy and production shows it was maybe only 30% wearing them even though they mentioned a reminder at the beginning to wear them, just wasn't enforced. Walking around interior of ship maybe 50% wearing them. I do think it is hypocritical of them cancelling some events like bean bag toss, etc but it was okay to have the crowded bingo shows and crowded bars without masking up because that was a cash cow for them.

For the people who complain about enforcement, it is still much more masking up than going into a local Walmart or grocery store.

Just off Magic B2B and no masking by many.  Signs were up but no one paid attention.  As a result, we just tested positive for Covid after a year and a half of being so cautious.  Disappointed with Carnival.
