New York Dock and Parking

For those of you who have sailed out of New York, where do the ships dock?  Also where would you park if you drove your own vehicle to the port?  Considerations would be how safe, ease of getting to and from the dock and of course cost (which I am sure would be substantial in New York)?

Any alternative methods (Park and Ride etc) would be appreciated.

Thanks

We sailed out of Red Hook about 15 years ago. Parking was very convenient to embarkation, although not in a good neighborhood. Since we had to drive three or more hours through New York City traffic, I allowed a lot of extra time so we arrived very early. We are a big walkers, so even though the parking lot was not close to neighborhood streets, we walked back to into the neighborhood. It was early morning, and as we walked we saw some police officers on foot patrol getting a coffee at a busy deli. As we walked around some side streets to try to get a glimpse of the water, we saw a police officer was “tailing” us. It turns out we were not walking in a safe neighborhood, and he wanted to ensure nothing untoward happened to “the tourists”! After that we stuck to the main street, busy with traffic and pedestrians.

Oceania normally docks at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal at either Pier 88 or 90. The motor vehicle entrance to the cruise terminal is at 12th Ave and 55th St.

The parking lots are on the roofs of the piers. Very easy, safe and secure parking. $40 per night, which sounds expensive to out of towners but is actually quite reasonable for Manhattan.

We always park at the cruise terminal unless we're on a very long cruise, in which case we take a limo to the port.

Thanks to everyone for your information.  Do you drive by and drop your luggage off before going to the parking area?

Unfortunately due to the layout of the roads dropping your luggage off first will result in your having to leave the cruise terminal complex and then driving back north on 12th Av and reentering the terminal at 55th St.

We just drive directly to the assigned parking lot. Sometimes there are porters there who can take your luggage but if there aren't you just take the elevator down on level to the pier's check in area and turn your luggage over to a porter there. If they're allowing it...and sometimes they don't because traffic is backing up, I'll just pull over to the curb near the elevator and take the luggage out of the car there. My wife will wait with the bags while I proceed  to park the car and then walk back to the elevator.

Wouldn’t a NJ hotel park and fly/cruise be a better option?  Spend the night, get parking, and UBER to and from.

This possibility has its own issues …….extensive tunnel/bridge back-ups are normal, and reluctance of UBER for a one way fare. Park at the port wins hands down in my opinion.

It may have changed, but in 2019 access for the parking at the Westside cruise port was open only hours they expected activity, so check hours before assuming it's 24/7 (obviously the car can be there 24/7). So far NY has been an end port only for us (not been a r/t NY) so haven't used the parking at the pier yet.

Yes, it's only accessible at times when ships are disembarking and embarking passengers.

Another possibility is renting a car and dropping it off at a nearby location.  Now of course this will mean a one-way rental both coming and going which are usually much more expensive than returning to the same location, but not having to pay the $40 per day parking fee could still make it a winner.  Depending on how far the rental car location is, you may need transportation to the pier.  Although we have never done this in NYC, it is common in many cities for the local rental car agency to provide a free shuttle from/to the pier.  We have used these rental car shuttles to the ports in many cities.
