Ardennais Posted March 13, 2022 #4 Share Posted March 13, 2022 Never seen him but watched the video and he’d be ok in small doses! He’s a South Walian - enough said!!

They are probably a bit more Walian than North Walians and not to be confused with the West Walians!

We call South Walians ‘Hwntws’ in Welsh and they call us ‘Gogs’. Don’t you have friendly regional rivalry in Scotland too? Taffy isn’t used as much north of Brecon - so the name instantly makes you think of somebody from South Wales.

Well we consider ourselves ‘Welsh Wales’ around here, still the stronghold of the Welsh language. We’re more Mid Wales than North Wales really. West Wales to us is Pembrokeshire. Taffys come from the South.

I spent Christmas on Anglesey a couple of years ago and was amazed that I hardly heard a Welsh accent, let alone someone speaking Welsh. Only heard that when visiting Caernarfon. The North Wales Welsh speakers sound more like Cheshire or Liverpool area when they speak English. We stayed in Beaumaris for 3 nights end of January and the hotel was full of Welsh speakers. Went to 2 pubs for a pub meal on different evenings and most people spoke Welsh there too! Depends where you go. We also stayed in Holyhead last September (great Premier Inn there!) and found that all the staff spoke Welsh once they realised that we were Welsh speakers. But you wouldn’t have known from their English accents.

I wasn't expecting the broad South Wales accent but did think most folks would sound Welsh...😀. Walking round Caernarfon we didn't hear anyone speaking English...
