We have an Alaska cruise booked May 22, 2022 and are flying in from Ottawa 4 days early.  Looking for suggestions for renting a car that may not be airport rental prices.  Also suggestion for a hotel for the night before cruise.  Finally, best way to get from cruise port to Airport post cruise (we fly out day after).  TIA

Just my thoughts;

I would rent a car from one of the airport kiosks.

The cost of an Uber which is cheaper than a taxi and there are 3 pick up locations at YVR, to take you over the Sea Island Bridge to other car rental locations which I doubt are much cheaper, wouldn't be worth it to me. All rental prices have gone up recently, the explanations being supply issues.

If you do want to try, look at google maps just off the Sea Island Way for more local suppliers.

Cruise port to airport depending on luggage quantity & ability, take the sky train. To get from Waterfront Station Canada Line @ Platform 2 to Vancouver Airport (YVR) takes 26 min  and departs every 10 minutes. Here is the link.  Note it is the Canada Line you want  https://www.translink.ca/schedules-and-maps/skytrain. Otherwise again I would do Uber.

Hotels are expensive in Vancouver, which is where I assume you want to stay. The Pan Pacific is a great hotel right at the dock. About $330 a night mid May. Auberge $250, Days Inn $199 Rosewood $391, Century Plaza $186. They are all in the main Vancouver downtown area. Again Google Maps would help with location for where you would prefer to stay.

We took the Skytrain from Waterfront Station to the airport after our Hawaii cruise. Worked out well. It’s about a 10 min walk or so. There was a line up for the elevator as a lot of cruise people had the same idea. It was very quick ride to the airport. We also took it again from the Vancouver Airport to Waterfront for our Japan cruise.

This is what we will be doing for our Alaska cruise. Much quicker and cheap.

When renting a car, try Costco.

Don’t wait to long to book your hotel.  I noticed the prices are going up. We booked a hotel last month and now the price has gone up by $75/night.

Thanks for the tips.

You're welcome.  Now I have a question for you.  Where in Vancouver are you planning on getting tested prior to boarding your cruise?  The only place I can think of is YVR however, were staying downtown for 2 nights. I know there is a thread on this however, your trip is coming up soon and that why I'm asking.  Thanks

Maybe this is off topic but if one in on a Cruise to Alaska from Vancouver, do the passenger have to have a COVID test (by HAL) prior to arriving in Victoria?  And, would everyone also have complete the ArriveCan doc.

My understanding is that if the ship called at a US port then everyone has to be tested within a day of the first subsequent Canadian port. Similar for completing ArriveCan. It is mandatory for anyone entering Canada.

That question isn't addressed directly by the GOC's information provided to date, but here's my interpretation.

If you visit Victoria as your first port after embarking in Vancouver, you have not left Canada so there are no entry requirements. It's just a domestic sailing at that point.

If you visit Victoria on the way back from Alaska, it becomes your point of entry to Canada and the testing and ArriveCAN requirements should stand. If this is the case, then there would be no need for testing or ArriveCAN for disembarking in Vancouver unless the cruise takes you to another US port after leaving Victoria.

The whole issue of ports visited during the cruise as opposed to arriving at the port of disembarkation needs a great deal more clarity IMO. I suspect that we will see a good many changes made in the weeks to come.

This may become a moot point tomorrow... government is expected to make the announcement that arrival testing will end effective April 1!!!

So far, the information suggests changes for arrival flying or driving. No mentions of arrival in Canada by cruise ship. But we'd certainly like that to be the case.

how about going the  other way. If we get on in Vancouver do we need a test when we get to Alaska because we are entering the united stated from Canada .

That's up to the US, not Canada. Canada's pending changes, for example, won't change the US requirement to be tested before flying into the US.

We were thinking of doing an online observed rapid test.  But I am still looking into what our best option is, and since this are still constantly changing, I am still waiting to decide what route to go.  Was hoping to also see what others on Vancouver departures are doing before us as ships should be sailing in April.

Just have to wait and see what the cruise line requirements are for “online rapid test”. In the USA the test has to be approved by FDA.

Are there any hotels in Vancouver, Canada that will let you park your car at the hotel for the duration of the cruise?

You're probably better off asking on the West Coast departures board. I think most of your options would be near the airport - many there offer a sleep/park/fly option.

Most hotel parking anywhere near Canada Place is likely to be expensive

I live in Vancouver, downtown actually and I can tell you parking near the cruiseport is expensive. There is a hotel right at the airport where they do have parking also really expensive but you can check its called Fairmont YVR, but I would say your best bet if you wanna park near the airport is Park n Fly, they're located on the airport property and have shuttles to the terminal. There are hotels in Richmond where the airport is located you might find some hotels that are more reasonable and offer hotel shuttles.
