Hassle to change room keys onboard?

We are looking to cruise this fall with friends who have never cruised.  My PVP suggested separating the couples so that both rooms get the best deal and then once we board having the desk switch the room keys.  Is this a hassle?  Is it something they probably do all the time?  While it is a good deal for everyone involved, I don't want the hassle for anyone on just a few days cruise.

The hassle is waiting in line at Guest Services.

Do it next morning before 0630 hrs (oh the horror!)
and you'll wait behind 1 person - if that!........
but I'm an early bird type when I'm on a cruise.
I get there around 6!!
