Refresh My Memory/First Time in Haven

Hi all. It's been a hot minute since I last sailed Norwegian (2019), and hoping people can refresh my memory on a few things. Additionally, this will be our first time sailing in the Haven, and first time visiting Harvest Caye, so have a few questions about that as well. We'll be on Bliss in February:

  • As a Haven guest, I see I can book restaurants 130 days out. When can I book shows/laser tag/go-karts?
  • Do I need reservations for the Haven restaurant, or do I just show up?
  • We've upgraded to the Premium Plus beverage package...
    • Does the beverage package also work on Harvest Caye?
    • Can I have my butler bring me coldbrew from Starbucks, or is that going to be an extra charge even with the package?
  • Where do you eat on Harvest Caye, and do you need reservations for it? Is it included or upcharge?
  • Do all Haven Suites get free access to Thermal Spa, or is that only for Spa Suites?
  • Are towels provided at Harvest Caye?
  • Is Muster still a pain, or have they switched to the way other lines are doing it where you just watch a video in your cabin now?
  • Do they still offer sushi in the buffet in the afternoons?
  • I see they've changed so that instead of each specialty restaurant costing a certain amount, they're all a la carte now. Is there consensus on whether it's better to buy a dining package or just go truly a la carte? It seems like maybe it only makes sense for Cagney's and Ocean Blue, and the others not so much?
    • If that's the case, can you specify which meals you want to go against the package and which you want to be a la carte?
  • Which specialty restaurants are available for lunch on Sea Days?

I think that's all for now, lol.

Lots of questions,,, here a few answers.

Drink packages work in Great Stirrup Cay.  Won’T work ashore at Harvest Cay.

No reservations needed for Haven Restaurant.  Should be able to walk most times.

Spa access in Haven spa suites.

Ordering a drink form the butler from a bar is a charge.  Imagine Starbucks the same.

hope this helps with some of your questions.  Enjoy the Haven

It's more a question of if they've gone back to the original muster process.  When I sailed in March I was sent a link (THREE TIMES) to the muster video and I was then guided directly to my muster station upon embarkation.  I don't know if NCL has changed from this process.

I'm not sure when you last sailed or on which ship, but when I sailed on NCL in 2019 (both times) there was a mix of specialty restaurant types, some were a cover charge, some were a-la-carte.  The a-la-carte is not really new.  You can definitely ring up a big bill at one of those venues.  I ran up $78 at Le Bistro and $81 at Cagney's (and that wasn't even including my crab cake appetizer!)

You should be able to book shows (I think just the two main theater shows) when you can book restaurants, but NCL has held back the opportunity to book shows recently.  I believe go-karts and laser tag can only be booked on board but your pre-cruise Haven concierge might be able to work some magic for you in this regard.

None

You tell the server when they first visit you if you plan to use one of your UDP meals.  They will likely ask.  If you get the free-at-sea promo you can buy an upgrade for 2 additional meals at a good price if you want more, this may be a pre-cruise deal only.

Shows you will have to check online using your user name and password.  Some times it shows up early and some times it does not.  Laser Tag and Go Carts are done on the ship only.  When you are escorted to the Haven Lounge, go immediately to the Haven Concierge.

No reservations are taken or needed.  I have only had to wait once for 15 minutes on a very busy night.

I always upgrade to the Premium Plus Beverage Package.  Look at the extensive op-ed I wrote here on CruiseCritic.com for lots of information.  No beverage package works on Harvest Caye. You also have to pay for food on that private island.  I would suggest, going to the island after lunch, spend a few hours and come back to the ship.

If you want cold brew, go to the Starbucks and get it.  The butler will bring you coffee from the Haven with is starbucks but not coldbrew.  They will also bring you french press.  Little know fact, the Haven does not charge for Specialty coffee in the Restaurant.

Several places to eat, all cost you.  Food is average to below average.  I have been there many times.  Just eat onboard and you won't be disappointed.  I have a Beach Villa, with four people.  The extra food and drink charge was close to $300.00.  Learn from my mistake.

NO, only the Haven Spa Suite.

Yes

You are required to watch a video.  The link will be sent to you several time.  When you get onboard, you report to the Muster Station, they ask you if you watched the video and scan your cabin card. Takes two minutes now.

Yes, if you want to call it that.  Lets just say it is Sushi lite.  The food republic which is a specialty restaurant has the real stuff.

I would always use the free at sea promotion or purchase a dining package.  Always except for Food Republic.  Dining Package is a much better value.

You got me on that.  If you are staying in the Haven and your cruise has a Haven Restaurant, that is where I would go for lunch.  After the first two days, eating three meals a day becomes kind of hard and I eat a lot.  Try the other free restaurants, that are good.

I hope I helped.

Cruise well.

Yes, very much! I read your lengthy reviews of Haven and Haven-lite and really enjoyed them - I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who plans my vacations *very* extensively!

@Sthrngary...quick question.  I saw you mentioned that specialty coffees can be had in the Haven Restaurant.  What might those be?

All I've ever had is the French Press, which is better than the coffee urns, but to my snobbish palate, still not great.  Would love to get some Lattes or Cappuccinos in the Haven (or better yet, "to go" at the Haven Bar).

My husband was able to order a Cappuccino in the Haven Restaurant. I enjoyed the French Press, but he likes the taste of foamy milk.

The secret to getting a latte or cappuccino in the Haven restaurant is...order them.  😉  My wife would order a cappuccino with almost every breakfast and many times liked to get one after dinner, too.

You know, you're right.  I would order coffee in the a.m. and they'd bring the French press.  I thought that's all the coffee that was available.  And, given a choice between the French Press and the "urn" coffee, I'll take the French Press every time.

I even liked the Nespresso machines in the Suite.

But, a freshly made Cappuccino is still my fave.

Now, I know.

Thanks!

This is another question about the Haven that has been discussed before.  It is never the main question so it is often missed.  As you know, I have stayed in the Haven with and without the Premium Plus Beverage Package.  I love, love, love a Cappuccino or Lattes with my desert at dinner time.  I have never had a charge or even been shown I was going to be charged.

I also love the Starbuck Machine in the Horizon Lounge which can do the same thing.  I go there early every morning when my family is asleep.

Cruise well.

@Sthrngary I think I remember you mentioning something about Sweet and Low not being available on ship. Do you happen to remember what they do have? I'm not too particular, I'll usually pick the "yellow" packets (Splenda) but will go to the "blue" (Equal) or "pink" (Sweet and Low) if needed...and in fact, I prefer pink (Sweet and Low) in iced tea.  Mainly I just want something that dissolves well in cold drinks and doesn't have a million calories. Any ideas?

This is the "ultra secret trick" in the Haven:  "Just ask"! 🙂

Worst case is that the answer will be "no", and you are right back where you started...

(Well, no.  Maybe the worst case is they'll say yes and there will be an unexpected charge.  Live and learn, OR... when you ask, ask if there is a charge.)

Actually, the "just ask" is a pretty good approach to life beyond the Haven, and beyond cruising.

In some cases, in addition to being "right back where you started", there might be a bit of awkwardness, but in the long run, it's turned out to be well worth it.

Most people won't come up to you and spontaneously offer what you are thinking about, because they simply don't know you are thinking about it, wanting it, cappucino or extra chocolate lava cake or whatever... ! 😉

I think, key word think they had some.  However, my lovely bride brought some anyway.  So hard to say.  I use it just like you and actually like it better then sugar.  I know I was not helpful but I wanted to answer your question the best I could.

Your point is well taken however I want to give you a way many folks think about asking for mostly anything.  They are afraid someone might say NO.  I know that does not make sense but to some, like my wife and son, it is important to them.  I on the other hand ask all the time.

Funny story.  The first time I had a butler, I did not due diligence on what they would do or not do for you.  I remember it was on the Celebrity Equinox.  My butler was nice but with no real instructions from me or my wife, they were a complete waste. Then I read some things right here on CruiseCritic.com and change my approach.  The moral of the story was an extrovert like myself, still had a hard time asking for things.

People almost have to get permission to ask for things they would like to have before they ask.  Not everyone, but enough people.  This little notion is why I write so much about what is available on cruises.  So folks will ask and not be afraid.

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.

We were on the Getaway in February 2022 and except for the Reuben in O’Sheehan the food in the Haven Restaurant won hands down. We are in the French , Cagney and Ocean Blue and nothing was as good as the double  lobster tails etc in the Haven and of course the super service goes without saying.

Find Gary's Secrets of the Haven post and read through all the pages. I found so many interesting tidbits in there - some things I said nope, not asking for that, but others I most certainly asked for.

That is the point.  I did not know either the first time I had a Butler.  So I asked for nothing and they did just that.  They are so busy doing things outside of being a Butler for Haven Suites.  Then I started to read online articles on what a butler does and does not do.  I read some of the common and uncommon things people asked for.

I would give you a list of what I ask for however it won't really help you.  It are things that make my cruise better.  However I will give you some items just as an example:

Coffee Delivered In the Morning:

Room Service only from the Haven Restaurant

All Pay For items out of the suite

Extra Lounge Chairs on the Balcony

Extra Wine Bucket for the Balcony

Mattress topper for sofa bed

Water for CPAP Machine

Request, not always handled of Diet Restricted Snacks (Keto)

The list goes on.  I hand them a letter on day one so it is all in writing.  Research what other ask for and have received and think what would make your trip better.

Cruise well.

To add to Gary's always spot-on Haven posts, my wife and I like to have dinner served in our room once per cruise.  If that's something you choose to do I recommend letting your butler know at least the day before.

Other than that, our butler has an easy job with us as the only thing we really ask is that the afternoon snacks not be cookies or other sweets.

@Treasure Hunter I wish you would stop talking about the food in the Haven Restaurant as I am eating a Tuna Sandwich on white bread.  I also had those lovely lobster tails.  More importantly I had the Prime Rib.  Then Lobster Tails and Prime Rib.  So now, I am having to have Tuna because I was starting to look like a Steer and Lobster at the same time.  Let us not for  get the Carrot Cake for lunch or the Chocolate cake from Cagney's.

Thanks for getting me off my diet.

The Good Mrs. Benson and I are still cogitating over what to put on our list of requests in our letter to the butler.  I told her not to be conservative in her wishes.  In the draught of my "Gary" letter. I've included the phraseology:

"We understand if ship's protocols prevent a particular request from being carried out."

That should cover us, in case the GMB asks for a ride on a unicorn or a date with Harrison Ford.
