fstuff1 Posted August 18, 2022 #1 Share Posted August 18, 2022 I'm in Ísafjörður today on celebrity summit. Island princess is also here. We are both tendering in the harbor. Then comes little Azuma strutting pass us into port and docking! 1 1

The dock could probably handle the larger ships, but moving around in the port would not be easy...not sure any of those larger ships could safely spin in the harbor, so the larger ships would have to either back in, or back out. Also, the channel in is not very wide.

Cruise Wonderland Posted August 21, 2022 #6 Share Posted August 21, 2022 It is simply because of the ship's size. Also I believe there are only 1 berth for medium size ships and 2 berths for tiny ships. If 2 Azamara ships arrives on the same day, then 1 of them still has to anchor at sea. I was there on Aug 3rd. Even as large as Holland America Zaandam could moor at the pier. Our Norwegian Star was at anchor.

We were the only ship there, and we anchored out. Too large to get into the harbor. Its a smalltown with limited tourism infrastructure. I can't imagine 2 or 3 ships there. I can't imagine 2 or 3 ships there. when i was there, 3 ships with 2 anchored. The restaurant I went to for lunch opens at 11:30am according to google. I got there are 11:20 and they were allowing people in. at 11:45 they were completely full. there were only 2 waitresses and 1 cook for like 20 tables! they didnt expect so many people (weekday) nor did they know 3 ships were coming today. fortunately, most of us were waiting for our 1pm 3rd party tour and ordered beer, soup, and/or a burger. When I left, there was a 3rd waitress.
thehowlingroad Posted August 22, 2022 #9 Share Posted August 22, 2022 Enchanted Princess was the only ship in harbor on 7/30 and we still anchored off-shore due to size. Beautiful little port on a sunny day, but with very limited harbor infrastructure, so it makes sense that the large ships have to run tenders. IWantToLiveOverTheSea Posted October 28, 2022 #10 Share Posted October 28, 2022 Viking Ocean's ships dock there, too. They're larger and with more passengers than Azamara. It was great docking there, especially if a person wanted to take a boat trip to Vigur Island or somewhere else. It was about a block long walk to the little pier for that. If you want to see ships docked in Isafjordur (and the little pier I'm talking about), there's a great webcam that shows where they dock.
