They said traveling with kids, so cocktails, etc probably won't work nor would waiting on lines.

Right ages 2 to 14.  We like dining together and seeing the variety that everyone orders.  I think traditional dining for us is the way to go.  Thanks everyone!

Rather than stand around the MDR entrance waiting for stragglers, then waiting for dining room staff to prep the table, just meet at your family "touchdown spot" or a lounge (Vintages, Schooner, 270).  Folks can leave in groups of 4-6, or simply socialize for a while, then take off for a show and dine late.  there's too much stress and politics involved in large group dining.  Do group cocktail hour instead.

Experiences differ widely.  We are a pretty close knit group of family and friends and enjoy each others company and have a lot of fun traveling together.   Everyone looks forward to being together for meals.   It would be totally foreign for us to split up for dinner.

Other than the first day, it is not necessary to march into the MDR as a group (traditional dining).  People show up and go directly to the table.  If someone can't make it for some reason they will let someone else in the group know.
