AQnyway, to slightly contradict him the actual new rules in Palma say that ' the definition of a mega ship such as Arvia etc is having a capacity of 5000 or more. It does not need that many passengers, just the capacity. It also states that in addition no more than 3 ships with over 500 passengers will be allowed, and a maximum of 8500 passengers per day. No exceptions save for Seaview as it is their home port.. So Seaview would be considered as having a capacity of 4,142. This is 100% capacity. When it carries 5,000 it will be operating at 121% capacity by using its third and fourth (or upper) berths. Ships don’t usually get that close to their theoretical maximum capacity due to solo cruisers, cabins out of use etc. Cruise lines regularly sail at 97-105% capacity without being sold out. 120% regularly would be unusual. I agree re @Yorkypete other points. I was told last night from someone in the know that passengers starting and ending their cruise are not included in the 8,500 limit. Otherwise 4000 off and 4000 onto Seaview would use the whole allowance with one ship. In the early days of cruising when typical ships like the Victoria carried less than 800 passengers and large ships like the Canberra and QE2 carried 1500 and 2000 respectavily, having more ships in port was usually good for business. But as ships grew in size - the Canberra would now be regarded as a small ship! - the point was reached were more passengers did not necessarily result in more business; just bigger crowds and visitor frustration. A bit like the Laffer curve in taxation. So it is understandable that ports will seek to limit the number of cruise passengers in port to that which will maximise trade. Which is why turnaround ships may well be excempt as their passengers will be mainly travelling to and from the ship and not clogging up the streets. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We are on Britannia 21 July and we have just been informed the same ,not arriving ibiza until midday leaving Ibiza 2am the following day and arriving in palma 12pm leaving at 6pm.
