riviera Posted November 28, 2023 #1 Share Posted November 28, 2023 We are in a junior suite but the shower is in the bathtub. Can we request a shower chair? If so, whom do we ask? Thanks everyone.
Mum2Mercury Posted November 28, 2023 #2 Share Posted November 28, 2023 Email special_needs@rccl.com or call 866-592-7225 . Make contact 2-3 weeks before your cruise. Include your ship and your sailing date in the subject line (otherwise they'll ignore you). I don't know specifically that they have shower chairs, but they have an awful lot of stuff, and you can ask. They have a request form. They certainly are aware of the need for shower chairs. We were in a handicapped cabin on our recent cruise, and we had a fold-down chair in our shower.

The chair is more like an armless stool, not the transfer type elongated chair.
Cruise a holic Posted November 28, 2023 #4 Share Posted November 28, 2023 perhaps you might consider moving to a handicapped cabin. The bathroom has a shower chair and is more comfortable for a person who has difficulty stepping into a tub. Enjoy your cruise.
Mum2Mercury Posted November 28, 2023 #5 Share Posted November 28, 2023 Just looked it up -- it is at least 60 days ahead of sailing. Then it asks about the equipment you're bringing /specifies that standard stateroom doors are 23" wide, while accessible stateroom doors are 32" wide: - Manual wheelchair - Power wheelchair - Power scooter - CPAP machine - Is your wheelchair folding or non-folding? - What type of battery does it use? - What are its dimensions? We reserved an inside guarantee on our last cruise, and we ended up in a handicapped room. The space was great -- I took the large low chest at the foot of the bed for my clothes, and my husband had all of a standard cabin's storage to himself over by the desk /dresser! Loved it! Yes, we had a large curbless shower with a fold-down chair on the wall. I didn't particularly like the shower because it leaked water all over the floor. After showering, we wiped up water and left our soaking towels on the floor ... not ideal, but also not worth a complaint. Yes, if such a cabin is available for you, moving to it would make sense.
TheDawg79 Posted November 28, 2023 #7 Share Posted November 28, 2023 Sounds like you need an accessible room. This tubs aren’t big and may not fit the width of a chair. I would see amount getting one of those rooms instead if this is something which you need special accommodations for.
SG65CB Posted November 28, 2023 #8 Share Posted November 28, 2023 My experience in a junior suite, and others have reported the same, is the tub is raised up and has a high side, it would be difficult to enter the tub for a person with limited mobility.

There are some JS that used to be called Spa JS and actually have a tub and a stand alone rain shower that has a tiled seat in it but it would easily fit a shower chair and has a very short step into the shower. Do you know what type JS you have? The ones on the hump at the aft elevators have the stand alone shower.

We have a small shower "bench" at home but wouldn't take it. So husband does the best he can holding on to the bars. We've brought hand bars but they won't stick to the walls of the shower. We also bring a bath mat for the bathtub which provides more stability. A handicapped cabin is the best but hard to get one. Plus Royal is now charging handicapped people more $$ for a handicapped cabin which is pretty bad penalizing those with special needs.

Was it the transfer bench kind that is supposed to be half in the tub and half out? We have one of those at home from a multitude of orthopedic issues. You just adjust the two legs in the tub shorter and the other two are out of the tub. The shower chair we got on Anthem was just an armless stool. We were in a balcony cabin for that sailing and nothing bigger would have fit in the shower.
DrProfessor Posted November 28, 2023 #14 Share Posted November 28, 2023 If you are past the 30 day window, you can also request it when you get on board from the room steward or guest services. We had to do that once for my mother who was in her own room and they took care of it.

The legs wouldn't fit in the tub. We did get a stool once also but it didn't fit either. We never ordered ahead and just asked the room steward when we met him and he brought them to us. Better a walk in shower really but we manager somehow.
