So much for not being bothered 😉

Actually, she sees me coming and going several times every day, and I've even told her I don't need anything but towels, which I steal from her cart when she's not around... She snuck in two mornings ago when I forgot to put up the sign when I went to breakfast.
Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1708 Share Posted January 18 Okay, I'm going to try and finish up the St Thomas chapter now. Where were we? Oh yeah, Ideal Roti Shop, for what would be THE BEST thing I've eaten this entire cruise, including the ship and Miami... I went for the boneless chicken roti with a side of hot sauce. ($16) and a bottle of water and also a Ting, since we're in the Islands...
Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1709 Share Posted January 18 As you can see the place is incredibly small, and doesn't even have a bathroom or anything, just a few barstools. It looks like most people just get their orders to go. I'm telling you this was the highlight of my entire week so far!
Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1710 Share Posted January 18 Once I was done with lunch, I headed back out to explore the area some more... No real plans in mind, and I surely am not in the market for jewelry, so I tried to find a shop, any shop that DIDN'T sell jewelry... I eventually stumbled across a place with African art, and they had some interesting tribal masks (which I collect) so I checked those out. The one I wanted he said was $200, but when I started walking towards the door it was all the sudden $100... I told him I'd give him $75 cash on the spot, and he packed it up for me. Now I have two masks that I have to try and get home in one piece...

Luckily there was one emergency light in here. If the ship switched to shore power that is normal for a moment.

Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1715 Share Posted January 18 So, now that I have these TWO masks, I needed to try and find a decent sturdy cardboard box to use as my "checked bag"... I'd already pre meditated this situation yesterday with the first one, and bought a roll of packing tape at the dollar store in San Juan... I was scouring the alleyways in search of boxes, but no luck. I decided to pop into some of the liquor stores there, and see if they would give me one. The first place I went claimed not to have any, even though there were thousands of bottles of liquor in the shelves. Where do you think that liquor comes from? BOXES, that's what... I went to another place and kindly asked a guy, and he looked at me like I was speaking Chinese. I couldn't believe that there wasn't a single person in this town willing to give me what basically amounts to garbage... I began looking in the alleys, and still couldn't find any. I decided to just start walking back towards the ship and hope for better luck near the port...

Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1718 Share Posted January 18 As you can see, I was exploring wayyy back in the neighborhoods away from all the tourists. Actually, I was still looking for a box at this point...
Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1719 Share Posted January 18 Eventually, I just gave up on the box situation, and when I saw the red fort, I knew to take a left and take the long hot walk back towards the ship...
Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1720 Share Posted January 18 Once I'd made the long hot walk, I cut through the marina at Yaght Haven Grande, and found a public restroom, as I really needed to pee by now. When I was leaving the bathroom, I saw and old penny on the floor there, and decided to pick it up (with a paper towel, since it was on the floor of the bathroom)... I figured that this could be my "lucky penny", and maybe a box would "just appear"... Well, guess what happened next? I walked out of the bathroom, and there was a box lying in the alley on the way to the sidewalk... I picked it up, and was happily on my way back to the ship... Several minutes later I was back on board again, and took another shower to wash off the sweat of the day... It's getting to be about close to 3:00 now, and I don't have a single plan for the rest of the day... Actually, make that the rest of the cruise. I'm just going to play things by ear, and see what happens next... 36

They've been GREAT in allowing me to post my daily screed for years now. Honestly, I never had any plans whatsoever to be a "travel writer"... In fact, my mom has been telling me for years that that's "what I should be doing with my life"... (She doesn't even know that I do this at all...) For the longest time, I've been in search of a greater purpose for my life, and spinning my wheels here just isn't getting me to wherever THAT is... I'd like to write real books making real money, rather than try and entertain what amounts to 318 people... I've got at least three books that I want to write and probably "self publish" since I have no "connections" in"the business"... I don't even know where I was even going with all that, but I DO want all y'all to know I appreciate EVERY SINGLE ONE of you here reading today as well as in the past. If I do ever write my"magnum opus" hopefully y'all will read it as well... I would buy a book of photos from your trips, including Brickell photos. I LOVE the Brickell photos. Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1722 Share Posted January 18 That roti with huge and filling, but I think I might need something else before actual dinner... I'm thinking about a lobster roll at Seafood Shack...

Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1724 Share Posted January 18 Things are coming to life out here in the Lido deck... I decided that Street Eats would be a more economical option than the $18 lobster roll...
Rare sid_9169 Posted January 18 Author #1725 Share Posted January 18 (edited) The fridge in my room is cool but not exactly cold, so I went and retrieved a bucket of ice from the bar... Looks like it's gonna be a nice bottle of champagne this afternoon, and then who knows what... Probably twenty pieces of ice ended up on the bathroom floor while I was trying to get it in there...
