We need more info. There are three ports in New York: Cape Liberty in Bayonne, NJ, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, and the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

What's your budget? Something nice can mean something that's $400-500 a night for a 4 star or $1000+ per night for a 5 star in Manhattan.

We stayed at Ink48.  Very nice hotel and we walked to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal morning of cruise.   It was the closest hotel we could find to the terminal.

For us, it worked out perfectly.

Up to $1000 gives a lot of options.  Would you want a hotel with good food service, or perhaps one near several interesting restaurants.   No real point in wanting to be “close to cruise terminal” - unless you want to be within easy walking distance, what real difference would there be between a ten minute taxi ride and a twenty minute one?

Agree that you have a lot of options at up to $1000. Are you looking for someplace with a restaurant (you say you're getting in late) or nice bar? Close to nice dining options? Or just a nice hotel to spend a relatively short night? Any chain preferences? What are your dates?

As @navybankerteacher says, there's no real need to be close to the cruise terminal. It's a short crosstown cab or Uber ride from most of Manhattan. Certainly from anywhere in Midtown. And lots of possibilities.

Manhattan Cruise Terminal   Up to $1000   Thx.

Our favorite hotel by far is the michealanglo, our favorite room is a great grand suite which is 800 sq Ft and has two full bathrooms, they also offer a 600 sq Ft with 1.5 bathrooms, normally the larger goes for 600 or so a night. Great location 51st and 7th ave close walk to lots of great restaurants and bars , a little less than a mile from cruise terminal.

We are frequently in NYC. We stay at the Courtyard/Residence Inn at 54th and Broadway. (Actual address is 1717 Broadway.) Very helpful staff for arranging transportation. Less than a 15 minute taxi ride to the pier. Great restaurants everywhere.

Up to $1000 take a look at the St Regis at 55th and 5th. Overall my favorite luxury hotel in town through experience-- blends old New York with updated features in the room. The King Cole Bar off the lobby screams New York and the food in the hotel, room service in particular, is very good. It's part of Marriott Bonvoy so you can either earn a ton of points or actually use points if you want to drill the cost down a bit but most of the time their entry room will fit into a $1000 a night budget. Its in midtown so a very short ride over to the MCT and sometimes they'll even take you for free in the Bentley house car.

The Pendry Manhattan West is also very good-- a lot less grand than the St Regis but nice in an understated way and usually a little less expensive. The Park Hyatt is also very nice if a little stark.

Although they fit in your budget The Plaza I think comes across very cold and the Mandarin Oriental is in major need of a refurb-- would stay away from those. The Ritz Carlton on Central Park is nice but the St Regis, for basically the same amount of money, is much nicer.
