mcrcruiser Posted August 22 #1 Share Posted August 22 (edited) Other cruise lines in the Carnival corp have added or ordered new ships .Since it takes about 3 years to deliver a new ship ,whe do you think HAL will order new ships because Zaandam ,Volendam & some of the others are well up there in age ? What that is doing is increasing the debt load .Any bear market condition of any depth & length could cause a great deal of damage to Carnival corp because of these big ship orders .We can only hope that this manshement team's crystal ball is very clear

Menocchio Posted August 23 #8 Share Posted August 23 13 hours ago, mcrcruiser said: CCL is no different than the other big lines in this. NCL is also going pretty huge with its ships. I believe RCC has indicated that they intend to go smaller soon-ish, but I don't think those are even on the books yet and "smaller" than Icon of the Seas could still mean bigger than any ship made before this decade. The mega-ships offer several advantages, even in a potential economic downturn. Economy of scale being the big one. But apart from that, they are easier to market and run as destinations in and of themselves, which gives them a certain amount of flexibility. Yes, they're too big for many ports. But ports have their own problems. Weather, crime, instability, crowding and the backlash to overtourism. It is perhaps more profitable to just have the guests enjoy the floating theme parks and visit private islands (and maybe Nassau or other huge ports able to accommodate them) than try to actually work with these places. The length and price of the cruise can be adjusted to the market, finding cruisers at whatever price point they are able and willing to pay.
