Tell Me More About Century!!!

Recommended Posts

I have received a special request for a picture of a specific painting on the Century. Can one of you who is having an upcoming cruise of the ship take a photo of this painting and e-mail it to me.

The picture needed is one to the right of one of the elevators and was a full-length picture of a woman dancing alone. It showed her from behind with her head tossed back and was mostly black and white.

Thanks!

Well pooh, I wonder which deck it was on. I seemed to have missed that! That's what I get for taking the stairs (in an attempt to keep the weight gain down!). It sounds like something I would like.

Guess we'll just have to sail her again to see it.:D :D :D

The Century must have made an impression on my Sweetie Brad 'cause he's been telling everyone that cruisin' her on the Caribbean was much nicer than any other cruise he has been on! (Hmmmm...maybe 'cause he was with ME!) I think I may have him hooked.....now, if only we could find the time to go again....... :D

I just read all of the newest reviews for our ship. It could just be me but some of the phrases used in them seem to repeat themselves from review to review. Except for the people who actually liked Century. Is this a conspiracy?See if you don`t find a common thread. It would explain the rash of bad reviews?Just my thoughts.

I've been home now for a few hours, unpacked... laundry is going, rested a bit.

Had just a terrific time on Century. Overall an absolutely wonderful week. Oh there were a couple of annoyances, but I would never let them ruin my week.

Once I settle back into the swing of things, I'll do a bit of a recap/review.

(I did get an Almond Croissant on Sunday Morning... and a couple of other mornings as well & the damn place is called both Tasting AND Cova depending on where you look... kinda weird)

Oh yeah... one more thing... the waffles are worth the entire price of the trip.

More later...

John

I'm glad you had such a nice time and didn't let the little things get to you.. :) I'm looking forward to your review. I sailed Century last month and am going back in September. (for the waffels) :p Do you remember who the Captain and Social Hostess were on your sailing?

We went on an eight day cruise on Mercury out of San Francisco in March of this year. My dear Nedra was under the weather with a fever, and the assistant housekeeper came in for a long chat with us, and she raved, really raved about Century and its staff. She said she did four consecutive contract tours on Century before coming to Mercury.

So, we went on Century in May for a 7 day western caribbean cruise. Guess what? The asst. housekeeper was right - what a great ship and a wonderful staff. We loved the ship and even found a neat quiet place to have a pre dinner cocktail. It is located behind the casino, and tucked in a corner is an intimate martini bar.

Saw a reference in this thread concerning Captain Skylogiannis of Century. He is in his 40's, and looks younger. He is married and has one child and they live in England. He said that he is taking the month of July off because his wife is having their second child this month. Nedra and I have a lovely photo of us and other lucky pax who had dinner with the Captain on May 23rd, and we show it to anyone who might express even a slight interest. [Had to get photo out in order to spell the Captain's name!] It was a lovely evening, even though during the dinner we were rounding the east end of Cuba and entering the passage way between Cuba and Haiti during the storm which caused so many deaths in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. [I will leave out the details of the effects of this weather on the pax.] The Captain said that he will be moving to one of the M class ships.

All in all, we really loved the Century, and are returning to board her on 2/19/2005.

Ack! I too missed the CC party. But at least I wasn't the only one! This was my third time on the Century, second WC sailing. It was amazing once again. Yes, the ship is starting to show a little wear, but very little, in my opinion. As always, the service in all areas was impeccable. There's not much I can add to Dawn's review -- she was so thorough! I was a little upset at first because we had requested a table of four for our party of three and were seated at a table for 8. We were so lucky in that our table mates were absolutely lovely. We kept running into one of the couples all over the ship, which added to the fun. I know we'll keep in touch, and some of them had pre-existing plans to visit Philadelphia next summer, so we'll be seeing each other again. I wasn't thrilled that our table (593 for late seating) was in the far corner of the dining room next to the kitchen. We weren't able to see the lovely room from where we were, but on the up side it was very private and we wound up having such a good time that it might have been better that we were away from other diners! Our waiter, Hernan from Mexico, and assistant waiter, Barbara, were outstanding. So friendly and attentive.

The sommerlier was less so, and I suspect it was because three of the people at our table were nondrinkers. She didn't check up on the rest of us as often as I have come to expect. On the last formal night, I ordered a VERY expensive bottle of champagne and a bottle of nonalcoholic champagne for the table to share and asked her twice to please save the empty champagne bottle for me. It was hand-painted, and I collect glass. But on the last night she told me it was thrown away. She apologized and offered me an empty liquor bottle, but her attitude made me feel like she thought it was a nuisance for her. A small thing, I guess, but as I said, not what I expected from a Century staffer.

I found our daily cappuccino at Tastings to be quite a joy. Our server, Serhan from Turkey, was delightful in a dry way and always remembered what each of the three of us were drinking and how we prepared our coffees.

The breakfast and lunch buffets were, as always, quite good. Once in a while, something would be cooler than it should be, but that was rare. I found the lunch selections to be diverse and delicious. Breakfast offered the same selections each day, but that's to be expected, and they were always beautifully arranged.

Dinners were as wonderful an experience as ever, with just one entree (in my opinion) being less than par. But, as Dawn said, I simply ordered another. By the end of the week, Hernan was reading our minds and bringing us what we ordered and then some, based on previous nights' appetites.

I thought the entertainment was top notch. We didn't see the shows this time around, but the singers and performers in the open areas were great, especially Vibz, the pool band; the Too Hot (?) Duo in Rendevouz Square and Rick Stickney, who played most days by the entrance to the AquaSpa. Karaoke was a blast -- the hosts were too funny and really got the audience going. Funny thing is... most of the people who sang were actually very good!

Joyce, our room attendant, was a delight. She kept our cabin spotless and well stocked, and even took the time to put my traveling companion's stuffed duck on her pillow every night. (Long story, but that duck sure made the rounds!)

I was, however, very disappointed with the spa. On my last two Century trips, you had the option of paying $16 for a whole day in the Thalassotherapy pool (coming and going as much as you pleased), or buying a weeklong pass or visiting the T-pool for half an hour before and half an hour after any spa services. Now, the only way to use it is to pay for a weeklong pass ($60) or pay $20 a session, no matter how long or short your session is. If you pay $20 and stay in for half an hour then go out for lunch and come back, it's another $20. The weekly pass is a great deal, but with so much excursion time, you never know how much time you'll have in the T-pool. The daily option and pre-/post-service use was as nice touch that I'll miss. But no matter what the cost, the T-pool is the ultimate in decadent self-pampering.

Plus the spa services have been cut way back. I used to enjoy the long aromatherapy baths and, especially, the private couples Rasul mud session. Now all that's offered are fairly straight-forward massages, along with pedicure and manicures and the like. I hope they ramp up the spa services again. I missed the original spa tour on Saturday afternoon and was offered a private tour, which consisted of nothing more than standing in the hallway and being given an abrupt rundown of what was available. The woman gave me a sheet with services on it and when I inquired about something that wasn't on it, she said, "Oh, I guess we still do that." Not very helpful.

Don't get me wrong, I still rate the Century experience a good, solid A. But having been on her three times, it's easy for me to spot where they might be cutting corners. Still, I recommend the Century to anyone, and we're planning another Eastern Caribbean cruise on her -- this time with the kids -- next summer. If anyone has any specific questions, please email me with them: merrilymeggily@aol.com

Merrily:
Thanks for your notes regarding the scaled back spa services. I only usually indulge in such treatments once a year on a cruise, and its unfortunate that there will be less to choose from. Sounds like I can still enjoy my tradition of a massage on the first evening followed by Champagne in a hot tub. And that's still a pretty great way to spend my first hours on board.... Can't wait!!!!

I hope this thread does not go away for awhile. I don't sail until November on Century but I really enjoy hearing about this ship. Sailed Celebrity many times but never on this ship. Just made my airline reservations yesterday. Took advantage of the price wars the airlines are having. I saved about $400. The airlines are really fighting for position. Made my hotel reservation also, so I will look at this thread everyday and learn so much. Thanks for starting this. Pat

I think there's enough of us Century lovers to keep the thread going. I'll do my part:) . It seems like there are a lot of people sailing on her in the next few weeks (including me in September!!) so hopefully interest will pick back up.

So whats all this I hear about amazing waffles on board? Where do you get them? Whats so special about them?

Also - as I asked on another thread. Is there a pool on the ship that is adults only or a section of the pool that might be less kid-oriented?

The September Centurians are starting to get psyched. We are starting to make plans that look like they may unfold. One of us, who will remain nameless right John, is thinking about going on the artist tour in St. Martin. does anyone have experience with that? we are also trying to figure out a place for a pre-cruise dinner. for many of us, not to expensive, near 17th st. as many of us are at Amerisuites. Is there any type of food that is often not available on the Century that we may want to have for dinner the night before? Any suggestions? Also: for snorkling on STT, Coki or Sapphire? what is your opinion? Some of us have CC rooms. Anything not to miss? such as the French toast in the morning? Is cappacino/expresso complimentary in cc rooms? boy am I getting psyched. and for all those who are getting on her tomorrow, have a wonderful time. tell us all about it. and for all those getting off tomorrow, I am sorry lol. Hope you had a great time. till our Century comes deb

Psyched doesn't even begin to cover it for this September Centurian! Two months to go and I can't wait! I've been wishing my life away for the past few months waiting for it to get here!

For the person who asked about the pool, there is only one pool, well it's like one pool cut in half, so there are two sections to it. I don't remember one side or the other having more adults, we cruise while school is in and there have never been many children on board.
