Lois, No I didn't see any loveseats on any cruise but since you are sailing solo, stay with the barstools. It's safer. There is a bar between you and the tender.

hello everyone, we are going on Century on their May 22, 2004 cruise. There are several forums for Roll Call for this cruise, but we have only four people signed up.

Come on - sign up. On our Mercury cruise departing San Francisco on 3/13/2004, we have 29 people signed up for the CC party. Why can't we do this on this cruise. As added inducement, Nedra and I will like to have all of you come up and see our Royal Suite [1029] and share some wine and bubbly.

cechase, I'm betting you will have better luck with the rollcall as your cruise gets closer. Our Zenith rollcall was like pulling teeth until it got 2 weeks out. Lois had the same problem with her first Century cruise.

meisha, These boards are great for biding your time until your cruise. Anticipation is half the fun.

Lois, No go but thanks for the invite. Tom tries to keep my flights as short as possible so the Xaanax doesn't have time to wear off.

Princess,

one obscure (perhaps even useless) factoid about the Century--did you know that she has the most suites of any ship in Celebrity's fleet?

Surprisingly, even if you do not include those mini-suites at the stern of the ship, the Century still has more suites than even the Millennium class ships.

My favorite is the Rondeaveau also!

It is classy....live music too. Usually a duo or trio.

Erol...my most favorite bartender is always there

And I always have my drinks there before dinner...and usually so do others...so much so you get to know each other over the course of the week! Its got a very "comfortable" feel to it. But..wait...that is the entire ship...it is totally "comfortable"

Just returned from a cruise on Century from 2/28 til 3/6. Had very high expectations after reading stuff on this board plus the 6 other cruises I have been on. High marks for embarkation and disembarkation, service, ship layout, and entertainment. Only medium marks for food (yes, we had filet, lobster tails, and baked Alaska - for example, but the quality and presentation was not exceptional. Expected the level to be on par with some of our city's finer dining restaurants and it was not). Breakfast and lunch were fine, just not great. We eat everything, so that's not it, but we are very well-travelled and expected the food to be something we would rave about (due to the Conde Nast rating) and it was not. Shows were fabulous, but the entertainment in the bars was only OK. Would still highly recommend Celebrity, but honestly, except for the very smooth embarkation and disembarktion, it wasn't much better than our Carnival cruise we took last year. Some walls on the ship had creases in the wallpaper and nicks on other areas. Ship seems a little tired looking - needs some perking up in some area. Again, we are comparing our experience to staying in a 5 or 6 star resort or to other cruises. This cruise was indeed a 5 star. Hoping to step up to one of the luxury lines next year and see if they are worth the extra money (especially going to less travelled ports).

I think it is unrealistic to expect that lobsters, filets, and baked alaska will be uniformly wonderful on cruise ships, no matter what the line's reputation for cuisine may be. We were on Millenium this past January, and I had all 3, and was disappointed as well, but, after I thought about it, I decided that those menu items are probably not the best choices. The baked Alaska is mass produced; it has to be; they serve so much of it at once. Meringue and ice cream as a combination cannot, imo, compete with some of the really elaborate desserts that Celebrity has on its menu. But the baked Alaska parade is such a tradition in the cruise industry. Next cruise, on Century, I'll skip the baked Alaska and get a torte or something. Likewise, the steaks on the Millie were more akin to Outback than to Morton's. Nothing wrong with them, but not anything to write home about, either. The wonderful steak houses I've been to have buyers who go to the local meat markets every few days and buy the best meat available. Obviously, no cruise line can do that. The fact that they serve lobster tails instead of whole lobsters ought to tip you off-- this is frozen seafood, very easy to cook to toughness. If you've had fresh live lobster in Maine, this cannot help but run a distant second. Again, if they were to WANT to serve live lobsters, where would they keep them? My advice: if you are not a snobby eater-- the steaks and lobster tails and baked alaska will be fine. If you are, stay away from them in favor of the lamb, the beef tournedos, the duck, the veal, and the wonderful dessert selection. When in doubt, ask your waiter-- he is working for tips which depend on his relationship with you and not on pushing some particular dish.

I couldn't say it better. These are the dishes that everyone goes after so they do them up in mass. The less popular dishes are definitely better. I found the lobster only so-so but I am spoiled with fresh Maine lobster right off the boat. Ditto for the basic steaks (nothing is better than corn fed Iowa beef). On the other hand, it was the second best duck I have ever had and the rack of lamb was great. The soups were unbelievable as were most of the desserts.

I can't say why I loved the lounges I mentioned so much -- just well appointed and you really feel like you're in the nicest night club you can imagine.

I got a caviar and champagne platter at the Champagne Bar in the Crystal Room as a special treat since they have no Olympic-style restaurant. The Activity Staff held Kareoke there, too. They are some of the most energetic people you will ever see.

But what was so terrible -- WE HAD TO EVENTUALLY GET OFF THE SHIP. This was traumatic and I may never recover.

On our recent Zenith cruise the lobster tail was surprisingly good. On the other hand, the King Crablegs I had been looking forward to were truly overcooked and dried out. Back from 3/6 eastern itinery. We have been on 9 cruises so we some experience to go off of. Celebrity is our choice of cruiselines but others will do based on what our needs are. Just a few observations... The ship for being bout 7 yrs old looks great.. They put in a big effort to keep her cleaned up.. Never any trash layin around or trays to be picked up.. I notice this stuff and was very impressed at the crews yomans effort. We both commented on the size of this ship. We like the slightly smaller ship, its easier to navigate but large enough to spread the people out. The cruise director is rick spaeth and the pool band is vibz. The band was very acceptable as some of the past bands we heard were alittle weak.. I also liked the solo guy that played 60's favorites.. He had a great voice.. The gal in the piano bar is very entertaining. We did not like the two guys duo in the rendevous lounge. The food overall was wonderful however.....my lobster was the worst of 9 cruises and the lady next to me complained about hers. They seem to grill them and they get dried out and were tough.. My new york cut was not good either.. overwise all the other selections were wonderful. including the lamb, escargo, frog legs, and whatever else. I had the hot soup evry night.. Our waiter, asst. waiter and room attendants were the best ever.. I could really see a difference in service over carnival... They truely want you to have a nice vacation and we did. Its always good to get back home. We're both alittle tired, bobbing around like we're at sea and just regrouping from a wonderful week at sea.. I never expect perfection at sea.. I own a sailboat and know the unknowns that come up... I believe of the nine cruises we have taken this was one our better ones. craig and leslie.

We were on the penthouse deck just last week. I normally go low in the middle of the ship fairly close to an elevator but for whatever reason she said I could be on the penthouse deck with no addl cost. we had an outside cabin right under the aqua spa. I would not do this again for two reasons. Number one, the higher you are the more u will notice side to side motion and number two, they had late night dj music by the pool just atop the stairs, it was very loud and felt like in the room next door. The second night of this i was dialing the front desk at 12:45 am and all of a sudden it stopped. Think someone beat me to the problem. It was a conincidence we were that close but just the same, the music was loud, rap style stuff and at 53 I dont listen to that stuff. craig ps.....on the other had, we were 30seconds from the pool and our rooms were cleaned up by 9 am every day of the week.

Hi all,

We are considering the Century in October. Can anyone comment on the aft cabins? (category NS Century Suite) There is not much difference price wise between the aft NS and the Sky Suites. Which would you choose? Is the NS nice? Is the balcony large? Fully or partially covered? Do you get the suite perks with the NS?

Thanks so much

We had an aft cabin and loved the space. It was not a suite and had no balcony, but you could go out the door and up the back stair to the food court and we loved that. We had basically two rooms in that cabin. When you come into port, there is a ton of noise and vibrations in the back of the ship, even in the dining room. We have done 15 cruises and rate the Century as a favorite. The Century is a lovely user friendly ship.
Thanks for the pictures, Nealberk. We were on your cruise and are in your Century photo's. Hi to that father-in-law.

Hey all,

Just wanted to expand upon my original review of Celebrity Century - when I said the food was good, but not great. I used filet, lobster tail, and Baked Alaska as EXAMPLES because everyone generally eats these choices. My husband and I tried lots of things - we are not picky eaters by any stretch and we still stick by my original review. My hubby had the duck and it was only so-so. The creme brulee was the worst I have ever had. The escargot quality was good (not rubbery), but the garlic sauce was too salty to eat/dip bread into. We did generally took the waiter's advice, but still had the same opinions about the food (our whole table, in fact, felt about the same - they actually found issues with some of the food - whereas we liked most everything). And we had a varied table group (2 young 30's from Ireland, 2 early 40's from CT, 2 oldsters from FL, and us mid-40's from MI). The absolute best dish was a seafood combination on puff pastry served the last evening. The desserts, while decent (except for the creme brulee), were not anything to rave about either. Overall I would absolutely recommend the Celebrity Century, however, because of the other factors. Just advise not thinking that someone will leave the dining room and want to get lots of recipes from the chef.

Hi! We just booked on the Century for its May 8th sailing. It is my second time on this wonderful ship -- the first time was summer of 1999. There are three of us -- my friend Bill, Bill's father (also named Bill) and me. We're sharing a "sky suite," and I am hoping there will be enough room for the three of us. (Although last time I sailed on the Century, there were two of us in an inside cabin, so it must be better than that!)

Before we took our Century cruise last month, I had copied from the original board some of the comments/suggestions from past cruisers. I think maybe you new Century cruisers might find these helpful, so am copying them below.
mahdnc
Century differs surprisingly significantly from her sister ships, Galaxy and Mercury, in design (smaller tonnage compared to Galaxy/Mercury, fewer swimming pools, and virtually no regular cabin balconies). The design difference is much larger than the design differences that you would find among the Zenith/Horizon family or among the Millennium class ships. My point here is that in one real sense, the Century is a unique ship within Celebrity's fleet.
Lois R
Princess....sailed her twice ...I agree with the "homey" description.
When I walked back on her last month...you are on deck 4..Guest Services...and you turn and see that beautiful stairway...I had really felt like "I had come home again".
I have to say..when a crew enjoys their job...it reflects all over...and especially to the passangers...they always had a smile..a good morning...and it felt very sincere....
satchiesmom
For, the ship might be beautiful..but it is really the crew that gives it that "feeling"...of "warmth"..it wouldn't be as beauitful if it was "COLD"...
Anything else I can tell you...let me know...
I truley believe I could sail 100 more times...and she will always be my favorite ship
nealberk
We just got off the Century on 2/7. It was our first cruise and we are so glad we chose her. She's a very classy ship, but also very homey. The staff is wonderful, service fabulous, and the food is great. We love her so much that we booked an Eastern Caribbean for 1/22 next year. The T-pool is sooo worth the $60, especially if you have joint/muscle issues. I know you will have a great time! And if you drink, try the French Martini, it's great.
You might try my web site www.celebrity-century.com. I have pictures of the ship, a few of the programs, and the dinner menus.
We cruised on the Century last fall and loved it. Food was fantastic (Sergen was our waiter and he was excellent! On a previous cruise my father-in-law had Geronimo as a waiter- also excellent!)
You can ask for shrimp coctail at every meal even if it is not on the menu. My father-in-law had it every night and sometimes had four.
Don't miss "the ladder guy". Just don't sit in the first three rows (You are warned!) Feel free to give him a hard time, he loves audience participation and gives it back as much as he gets.
If you are not a member of the Captain's club, join as soon as you get on the ship. I have heard that sometimes they make you wait until you disembark but if you can register, do so. It gets you into the Captain's party on formal night and you get to meet the Captain. In my wife's words "He is a greek God"
The crew us fantastic, the ship is delightful, and I am getting jealous realizing that you will be back on it before I get the chance!
debjac
I'm not sure if they still do it, but a few years ago we sailed Century twice and both times the grill by the pool served fresh Belgium waffles every morning. Fruit, whip cream and syrup were available. They were delicious. On the Infinity last year I went searching for the waffle station and one of the staff told me that it was only available on the Century.
Loved this ship - have a great time!
nealberk
The skybar is right above the buffet area and can be reached by a circular staircase that circles the aft drink area. During the day, it is a bright, sunny, and quiet place although it is used as a gathering point for many of the kid's programs. At night it was seldom used for anything and I found it to be a great place to just sit and contemplate. You can go out onto the deck and just take in the ocean. Unfortunately with all the lights on the ship you cannot really see the stars in all their glory but that is a small price to pay for being able to see where you are walking!
Did not think about eating up there! I will have to give it a go next time we are on the ship.
I have a few pictures of the Skybar on my web page.
Lois R
Princess....food? Oh I must tell you...please try the chilled fruit soups...not sure if they appeal to you but at least try 1! They are absolutely marvelous...there is one .....Chilled Pear...oh my gosh...it tastes like someone pureed a fresh pair...sooo good
And on the lunch menu in the dining room..they serve a "French Potatoe Pie"....I had it both times I sailed her...outstanding...crust is flakey...layers of potatoes with cheese....it comes out looking like a 4 inch high piece of pie!....definite THUMBS UP for that
nealberk
Really, almost all the food is excellent and do not be aftraid to ask your waiter for samples if an item looks even remotely interesting.
Lois is right, the cold fruit soups are fantastic. Different, but fantastic. Speaking of soup's, I liked the leek hot soup. Got to see it being made (pictures on my web site) so I had to try it.
Was a bit disappointed in the lobster. I prefer letting the lobster speak for itself with only a bit of drawn butter to enhance the flavor. Celebrity uses some spices that I really did not care for.
Steaks were fantastic. Tender, juicy, and flavorful. The duck was the second best duck I have had (The best was at the Stillwater Inn in Jefferson, Texas).
Our table was not afraid to try the desserts. We usually had 2 or 3 per person and did a fair amount of sharing. One of our table mates admitted that she loved sitting with people who were not afraid of food.
hisfirstm8
Princess, The wine tasting is only once, but just look for it in the dailies. There is also a Martini tasting that I think is $10 pp, but it is really great. You get to taste small samples of about 6 different martinis. The Martini Bar was our meeting place before dinnrer and after dinner each evening. You need to try a Chocolate Martini for dessert some evening.
shavdog
Ok....heres a couple comments...The sushi bar is open from 6pm to 10 pm and is aft/starboard in islands cafe...we love sushi and tried it one night instead of going to dinner...i wished the hours would be 5-8 so both seatings could enjoy a sushi appetizer... they also have limited bar service.... if you are lucky to have a calm day at sea, go to the very front of the ship on deck 11 and just look over the bow...you hear nothing and just glide accross the ocean..that is one of our very favorite spots on the ship and most of the time no one is around. also on deck 6 there are deck chairs to relax and read a book and watch the ocean go by...make sure you bring your binoculars. we were on this ship twice and on both intineries.
One thing I forgot to mention:The food service by the pool serves the best belgum waffles...they come with fresh berries, whipped cream, butter and syrup.....I kinda suprised myself by having them at least three mornings...They also make omelots at this station and have fresh fruit.....The line was normally short. Be sure and try this for breakfast. craig
teedee
Another one of my favorite things on Century was on the breakfast buffet. They had a chilled oatmeal that had bananas, grapes, coconut, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, apple, and maybe even some other things that I can't remember in it that was delicious! I've never been a huge oatmeal eater, but someone on my first cruise on Century told me I should try it and boy was he right.

gkm,

Thanks so much for condensing some of the wonderful things cruisers have said about the Century. We are on the Century July 17th & reading all this again only adds to our excitement. These boards are great!

Oh my gosh. CC has just published the review that I submitted on 4/28/2004 or thereabouts of our 4/17/2004 cruise. Today is the 1st day & they didn't even mark it NEW. It is a titalating review, by all means enjoy.

Garry:
Good job of condensing everything. Would you mind if I posted this writeup on my website? Anybody else have any objections?

I figure if I get permission from everyone for using their words, I can get around the proprietary restrictions and be totally legal.

And I thought I knew (Newt?) my way around CC cyberspace...

Can anyone help with directions to the roll call section which includes the Century? Just logged on to this new system and I see a few other cruiselines in the roll call area, but no Celebrity. Anyone had better luck?

Hi Inquisitor, If you found the Roll Call Main page, you will find the Celebrity Roll calls there as well. Or scroll down to the bottom of this page where it says "Forum Jump", click on that....and if you scroll along you will find all of them, Celebrity, Carnival, Royal, etc.
Hope this helps:)
