Cruising89143 Posted July 19, 2006 #326 Share Posted July 19, 2006 Monte, most if not all of the water that was INSIDE the ship doing the damage came from the POOLS, not from the sea. People on our cruise reliably (I know them and vouch for their reliablity) reported seeing water COVER the windows on Deck 6, as the ship dipped, i.e., below the surface level of the sea. As for the injury totals, well, we were talking about that. I think that is was pure dumb luck. Tuesday was our final port day. It followed a sea day. About 900 of the 3000+ passengers were all on the Kennedy Space Center excursion. For that, you had to be in the Princess theatre at 6:50 a.m. We saw several movies, read and looked at exhibits, did some walking, then came back hungry & attacked the buffet. Then many of us then went to our cabins to nap! I think that there was a higher than usual number of people in their cabins. There were few injuries to people who were just in their cabins. Here is a link that states it was a 15 degree list. Carol glad to see you home safe and sound. :) http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060719/NEWS01/60719008
prarie cruiser Posted July 19, 2006 #327 Share Posted July 19, 2006 I stayed quiet on these boards last night, as instead of meaningless speculation, I wanted to hear from those onboard who really knew about the incident. Thank you to all the CC posters who thought of us, not just themselves, when recovering from the event. Your posts were better than any news service. Thank you to all the CC members who expressed a caring attitude and who were concerned about others. And, most especially thank you to the passengers who helped one another in an adverse situation, and the Princess crew who again seemed from the postings to perform in a very honorable manner. I really do not appreciate the arguments, exaggeration, and pure speculation based upon some person's personal issues with Princess, or their own needs to belittle someone else's traumatic incident. It would be nice if instead we focused upon the persons who need our support, not our criticism, right now.
bjcanady Posted July 19, 2006 #328 Share Posted July 19, 2006 Very few people got off the ship last night - just those who needed medical attention, I believe, and perhaps a few others. They had to get rid of some stuff - any food was free, even if there had been a charge before. Open bar all evening. At the bars, in the dining room. Nothing frou-frou, but if you wanted a soda, you got it. If you wanted wine with dinner, you got it. (I had brought ours) No money exchanged hands last night, except for casino payouts and refunds TO the passengers. To the person who asked about behavior of passengers in the casino after the list: certainly it is theoretically possible to pocket chips. I have no idea if anyone did it. About the TVs; I think that they ARE bolted down (to a swiveling platform which in turn is bolted to the cabinet) on Royal Caribbean. I agree; foolish of Princess to have overlooked this. Yes, almost everyone was VERY friendly and kind to one another. You can feel quite bonded to people who have the same near-death experience that you do. Re: The little girl and the fractured femur: the real problem was that the femoral artery was damaged. That is what made the situation critical. (I think that I stated that correctly. If not, I apologize for incorrect terminology) jfrenaye: you are being harsh and judgmental about others whom you criticize for being harsh and judgmental. Do people make mistakes? Yes, of course, but is it YOUR job to decide what tone someone is using on this board? If someone believes that Princess owes him a good meal, who are you to call that *disgusting*? No one said that anyone DID steal casino chips. A question was asked. Stop making sweeping statements about the morals of mythical people. And if people find the discussion of the ups and downs of corporate profits and stock prices, why do you care? I saw no "mob mentality" ON the ship (oh, I'm sorry, were YOU THERE?????), and saw no one on this thread referring to mob mentality, EXCEPT YOU. Many thanks to all of the constructive posters, and of course to those who express heartfelt sympathy and concern. I have enjoyed your posts and relived our inagural cruise, we agree with u, ours was one of best cruises in quite some time, the ship, the crew, the musicans, the entertainers, the food and our wonderful fellow passengers............it doesn't get much better.......... so sorry about the ending to a perfect week, glad u are home safe and hope that your next one ends as the one began............. crazee4cruzin Posted July 19, 2006 #334 Share Posted July 19, 2006 OK now that the dust has settled. I am dumbfounded by the mob mentality of people in general. I saw it in MSY after Katrina and hell, I even see it here on this opulent ship. People stealing other peoples' pictures. Comments about making sure they put you up in a first class hotel. Massaging portfolios to maximize profit. Class action suits. Wonder if anyone grabbed some casino chips? What has our world come to? Sometimes, humans really disgust me! However, I am glad that all on board are getting the medical attention they need, or are on their way home! Well, the original post was meant to inform. Some people get carried away as they do on almost every thread. This is a serious situation and everyone is entitled to their say whether you agree or not. Name calling is not the answer. I don't agree with picture stealing or casino chip stealing. Suggesting hotels was not a bad thing. Class action law suits are a whole other website. Your opinion is duly noted. Yes, we are all human and not perfect. It is human nature. Have a nice day!
roe2ship Posted July 19, 2006 #335 Share Posted July 19, 2006 Captain Andy Proctor is a fabulous master of the ship as well as the rest of the crew.........accidents happen...........please don't start pointing fingers, it simply is not fair............Who is pointing fingers?? You are right... accidents happen and they CAN happen to a fabulous captain too. Carol, glad you made it home safe and sound.

People on our cruise reliably (I know them and vouch for their reliablity) reported seeing water COVER the windows on Deck 6, as the ship dipped, i.e., below the surface level of the sea. I'm not disputing any of this. I was only stating what the situation was on the Sky and how people CAN exaggerate (I'm sure we all saw the reports of a 50-60 degree list). But at this point, I wouldn't be putting a lot of faith even in what the CG says until they finish their investigation. It was unbelievable how much their final results differed from what their initial statements were about the Sky. jmo -Monte
Troy4444 Posted July 20, 2006 #337 Share Posted July 20, 2006 I just heard that the Crown Princess tilt was 15 degrees, most ships can recover from a 45% tilt. We were on The Rhapsody of the Seas in April and the stabilizers malfunctioned and we had 3 tilts to 19 degrees. Our ship was not as tall as The Crown so the I am sure the tilt was worse on a taller ship. We lost our meals and many people were upset but we did not have all the injuries. 19 degrees was very bad. They are lucky nobody fell off the ship. Troy troybakermail@gmail.com

ceejay2sail Posted July 20, 2006 #341 Share Posted July 20, 2006 No free cruise guys. I am happy with our compensation and will be enjoying a delighful dinner in Tennessee on Princess. I don't feel undercompensated at all. Well *I* would have stayed on board. geez, i feel like something of a grim reaper here. i logged in initially to support our friend here who was on the star. and i usually lurklurklurk, doing research for our 30th anniversary cruise in the fall of '07 or spring of '08 (to my mind, so long as we sail before June 4, 2008, it still works for the 30th! and i'd actually go in the spring of '07, but our daughter will be married in April of '07, and i can't afford a wedding and an anniversary cruise without going into debt, which i refuse to do. it's all about cash and carry, baby!). since i haven't cruised yet, and most of my questions are answered by reading these boards, i don't post much at all. i'm so glad you were having a great cruise until yesterday. i'm glad you only got bruises in the incident. and i'm looking forward to reading your review once you get back home and hug all of your men.....mostly, i'm glad that you're okay, because i love reading your posts, and carol's. welcome home. guinness67 Posted July 20, 2006 #342 Share Posted July 20, 2006 Just out of curiousity, but what is the lowest deck on the Crown Princess that has outside access? I've never cruised on this particular ship. We were on the Adventure of the Seas a month ago and deck 4 has outside access. I've read reports that the windows on deck 6 were "in the water". If this incident had happened on AOS, people would have been "in the water" too! Having a good thought for all of those involved.
tapper Posted July 20, 2006 #343 Share Posted July 20, 2006 Thankfully, most of the passengers are well and on their way home. Someone said pictures were posted somewhere of the damage. Can anyone tell me where they are posted?
shirleygr Posted July 20, 2006 #344 Share Posted July 20, 2006 Oh, Carol, how horrible to be treated that way by airport security. Talk about adding insult to injury! EscapeFromConnecticut Posted July 20, 2006 #345 Share Posted July 20, 2006 Thanks again for all the reports. You did way better covering the story then any of our local stations. Umm ... I guess because those reports came from passengers on board. "Local stations" wouldn't be likely to have staff on every cruise ship afloat, would they? In reality, the media did a superb job covering this Carnival/Princess mess. We all should be relieved that there were no fatalities. But as with the Star fire, that bit of good news doesn't change the underlying fact ... something went enormously wrong with a Carnival-owned ship. Again. Time for Carnival to put serious $$ into fresh engineering studies. Meanwhile, let's hope the company genuinely takes care of the Crown passengers and crew; otherwise, this is exactly the kind of thing that the civil court system was created for. And it's why I'm happy to be an American, protected by those courts ... if this same thing happened in most countries, the injured would be at the complete mercy of the cruise line. But not here. God bless trial lawyers.
