HAL secrets

On the Vista class ships it's called the "Sports Deck." It's above the Crows Nest. Be CAREFUL, though ... it's dark up there at night and you don't really want to know what's going on. :D ;)

Yes I do. Preferably from first-hand experience. :o

I really just want to go up there and look at the stars

It is the best place on the ship to stargaze. VERY nice, indeed. I sometimes take my astronomical binoculars with me and lay out up there and check out the sky. It's amazing how much more you can see when you get away from the light and chemical pollution surrounding our cities and, indeed, the continents.

Longduo, On the Westerdam in Dec. 2004 and again on Volendam Nov. 2005, if I remember correctly, the charge for wash and press was $12 for all you could stuff in the bag provided. Shirts and slacks came back on hangers. You could have starched shirts if you wished.

We are going on our first HAL cruise in February. This is a fantastic thread for anyone new to HAL. Let's keep it going and up near the top so others can find it.

Do they still have the all the laundry and pressing you want for $7? That's a deal!

Hope this bumps!

Longduo

I know that when I called about this the cost was now....$45 for the entire week long cruise on the Zuiderdam.

What is that?

Phyllis, They're small ceramic tiles (made to look like Delft's blue) with the name of the HAL ship you're on (i.e. Veendam I, Veendam II, etc.) on it and either the ship's likeness or a typical Dutch scene (i.e. a windmill, a couple in traditional Dutch costume, etc.). You will get one per passenger. It's a real neat little souvenier if you're into that type of thing:)

Aren't those tiles given to those who have cruise HAL before? I'll be a first time passenger in a couple months, but I was understanding those tiles were only given to Mariner members.

That is correct. Normally one must have sailed on HAL once before in order to get the tiles. They are very nice. I have quite a collection of them, and it keeps growing. Some of us, here, probably have enough to tile a whole bathroom ... or kitchen back splash! :D

Yep Jim, you'll get them on your 2nd cruise, just as the Rev answered. Have an awesome cruise and enjoy!

A question for an old timer - multiple HAL cruiser that is - what creative thing do you do with your Mariner Pin?

Lose it.

Now, the 25- and 50-day pins are another story. Those are tasteful, and are usually worn to the Mariner's Party.

I keep mine on the medallion ribbon.

Can you give the dimensions on the tiles? I'm trying to think of what I can do with the one I'll get on my upcoming cruise, and it would help to know the size. Thanks!

Without going to measure mine, though I'll be glad to do that, I would estimate about 3x3 or 4x4, similar to a coaster. In fact, some people use them as coasters.
