Live!!! Tuggers Does The Zenith (again!)

I've always thought....'seat us with teenagers or with 100 year old folks, I don't care, but please seat us with happy people so we can enjoy our dinner'.

Ain't that the truth. :D We were on the Meridian many years ago seated in the far corner at a table for 10 with one other couple who argued every single evening. Those were the days when you weren't allowed to contradict the Maitrer'd. Or at least that's what he told us.

Gail, Love the reading. Thank you for taking the time. :)

Hello Tuggers. Thanks for sharing your Zenith cruise with us. Too bad about the tablemates...they sound like miserable people. How do they ever enjoy a cruise?

After reading about Mohr Im Hande for dessert...

Tonight was Salt Cod Bandade, Cream of Mushroom Soup, I skipped the salad, Chateau Breande (sp) and Mohr Im Hande for dessert. The beef you could cut with a fork but that didn’t stop one person from sending it back! Everything was wonderful! The dessert, of course, is a special favor to me from the chef. When offered to everyone at the table, three took it, ate no more than two or three bites and pushed it away. Lots of things I don't know, but one I do, is everyone ohh's and ahh's over this dessert. It didn't bug me too much but JoAn said it was highly insulting.[

...it sounded so wonderful I wanted to know more about it. You probably already know:

Mohr im Hend (a Viennese chocolate pudding), this most famous of Viennese cakes takes its name from the restaurant in Vienna where it was first served. I will be looking for Mohr im Hend on the menu the next time I cruise Celebrity. If not on the menu, I will make a special request. Thanks again.

Brigittetom.....We loved the Meridian!! She was the first Celebrity ship we ever sailed! :) We dined with Captain Varsamis one night and the Hotel Manager, Petros Macris another night. They were such nice gentelmen. We weren't in a suite or an expensive stateroom, we were just in an inside cabin, but we had paid to join the Captain's Club and they treated us so well...It was the best cruise we ever had.

Yes, That's VERY hard to deal with when tablemates argue or are arrogant...Yikes! It has happened to us more than once and we always wonder if the tablemates will be nice people or unbearable. LMAO about the Maitre 'd....hehehe.

IMHO, no one can ever beat any Celebrity cruise.

To bad about your table mates...I guess you just have to push your ignore button though. Sounds like the rest of your cruise is going well and that you are making the best of it. When you think about all the negative things going on in our world today, weeping at the dinner being too hot sounds beyond trivial. There must be other deep seated issues regarding the pathology you are sitting with. Yuk-so sorry. What other rude behaviors are you observing just out of curiousity?

Quick dining question. Whats the largest table? There will be 8 of us in a couple of weeks, and would like to have one or two additional couples with us so we don't get bored talking to eachother. Do they have tables for 10 or 12?

Also is Justin there? I hear he is in future sales? I lost his email and was going to give him a heads up that we'll be on the March 23rd cruise. If you see him could you tell him 'Hi' from Dave and John from the September Mercury Alaska cruise? Thanks! i know your time is valuable.

Sorry about the less than perfect tablemates, but at this point I WOULD make it a point to say something to them as they are affecting your cruise in a negative way, Although I know you don't like confrontations.

Thanks for the updates. I'm ready to jump out of my skin having to wait three more weeks:D

Dave:eek:

They also do some strange things at the table that are considered very rude in America. Maybe it is different in the UK, but we’ve started to leave the table immediately after dessert to avoid watching

Gail

I can't imagine what on earth they are doing ! I can't think of a custom that takes place after dessert which could be offensive. I am so sorry for your situation . Its dreadful when you do not have a good dining experience as its such a wonderful part of the cruise. I hope you are able to rise above it all and be determined to enjoy yourselves.

Thank you for the info about the door prizes, not sure I fully understand but thank yo anyway for your trouble.

I am enjoying hearing about your holiday - thank you for taking the time to share it with us all.

Brigittetom- We had a table for 10 on Zenith but it wasn't easy as the tables are for 8 at most. We were happy to be a little squeezed but unless it changed since last year I would imagine 8 to be the most.

sea-cruise, The Meridian was our first Celebrity cruise and we loved it too. We had the added advantage of running into a couple that I recognized from our previous cruise on the Song of America. Although we had never actually met, we had been around all the same people. We ended up spending the cruise together and met every year in Hilton Head until she died a few years ago. Broke my heart. The next year on the Horizon we were escorted to the exact same table in the corner and again, there was one couple seated. I said no way and kept walking. Actually that's when the Maitre' d was so rude. We told him that we had requested a table somewhere in the middle and he told us in no uncertain terms that what we requested had no bearing on anything. Only he decides where we sit. He did give us another table though. Who knows, that couple could have turned out to be the nicest people on the ship so it was actually our loss. The way they do it now with being able to check on your table when you board is so much nicer.

When did you sail on Song of America, Brigitte? Our first cruise was on her in August of 1992.

Hi newhips, We sailed in January of 1996. The only reason I know this is because my kind husband finally compiled a list of ships and dates and it's right here on the wall in front of me. I loved the SOA. Actually I did sail her quite a few times before I met my husband which would have been right about your time. :)

BridgetteTom, I hope if that particular Maitre 'd is working on another ship, he got an attitude adjustment by now. There is no need for rudeness, and hopefully he got enough complaints that he ended up a land based waiter.

Hope we meet aboard one day! Happy cruising.

I will try to answers few questions:

Justin is on vacation and will not be back on Z. Camilla (former CCH) is new FCS.

No X ships for Tampa for at least the next Caribbean season.

Joey is wonderful and will move up, I think they just want him to have a little more time under his belt, especially with an inexperienced CD. But they are both doing great. He's such a cutie pie!

James is dark haired. Quite pleasant. I have enjoyed him. He did come from another ship but I can't remember which one. Don't think he's your Suzanne.

It wasn't that they just pushed the dessert aside, they ordered others and gobbled them up.

Last formal night, and bear in mind, my table is right next to the Captain's Table, the husband of the weeper came to the table drunk and sang all the way through dinner. Then when the Baked Alaska Parade came around he stood up, ripped off his tie and twirled it in the air.

You will see the disgusting 'thing' in these postings. Bear in mind there were fair sized chunks of food involved, looked at and re-eaten! Too much for me!

Having had a cell phone attached to my hip for the better part of a decade, first for work and now just because, I FEEL NAKED!!! And so out of touch!

Ok, on to the good stuff!

Feb 25, 2007

Sint Marten today. Beautiful day. We are sharing dockage with NCL Dawn and the Galaxy. Lots of people for poor little Phillipsburg. It’s Sunday and only some things are open. Large stores like Little Switzerland, Polo and others are closed. Most locally owned are open.

I ate breakfast on the ship and stayed on through lunch that I enjoyed on the aft deck. A burger and fries with some soft serve yogurt.

About 2:30 I walked in to the shopping area at the pier and then took a taxi in to town. I found an internet place with $6 per hour access. That’s high but on Sunday they were the only ones open. They did give me a bottle of water! Also phoned home from there for $1.25 for a VERY short call. Sure miss that cell phone!

Walked around a little and then went in two casinos. The Jump Up and the Diamond. Neither one is anything special but I do like a machine at the Jump Up. Stayed there for a while, just passing time. Came out about even.

Took a taxi back at 4:30 and went up for Sushi at 5. JoAn joined me and we sat out on the back deck watching sail away, the sunset and our sushi! We stayed till well after sunset because it was so pleasant. Calm water and a slight breeze. Those of us lucky enough to travel this way really do experience a little bit of heaven out on the decks.

I am so thankful that I have been able to do this so many times.

We started to go to the ‘from across the pond’ vocalist but decided on a nap instead (it was an early show).

The menu included Cassolet of Escargot, Black Cherry Soup, Caesar Salad, Cog Au Vin and After Eight Ice Cream. I treated myself to a Chocolate Creamy Martini after dinner.

JoAn left right after the entrée and then everyone else left after dessert so I had a most pleasant time sitting and drinking my martini with Raphael and Paoulo.

There was not much going on after dinner. The shows were over and the casino was pretty dead so I came on back up to the cabin. We had planned to make it an early night because we are only in Tortola until 3 and we want to get some beach time in.

Bye for now!

Feb 26, 2007

JoAn and I met early for breakfast, Orange Juice, Prunes, Bacon, Cheese, Onion Omelet and Wheat Toast. Then we hurried off the ship to get a taxi to Cane Garden.

The taxi was packed full but we got there in very good time. We stopped at the Big Banana where we rented chairs and settled in. The beach was beautiful. Unfortunately, the water was very rough so JoAn and I could not go in. It was still lovely to sit there on that beach and watch and listen to the surf.

We came back about 1:30 and went to the dining room for lunch. Fried Calamari, Apricot and Mango Soup, Spaghetti Bolognese and Sugar free Chocolate Banana Tart.

All of it was very good and we both ate way two much.

We sat in the Martini Bar and watched the ship sail away from Tortola and stayed there for a while to read. Just being able to look up occasionally and glance out at the sea makes reading so much more interesting! And peaceful.

At 3:30 we used the only coupon in our Elite book that is worth anything: Free Bingo Pkg. Plus today we got an extra free card for the cover-all jackpot game. Second game was one I had never played: first person to get 7 numbers on one card wins. And I did!! $130. Not bad for a free card. That was all the luck we had. JoAn didn’t get anything and I got nothing more. But hey! It’ll pay part of my tips.

Or maybe I should save some of that windfall to buy a new cell phone! I’m still smarting from that bit of stupidity. And I hate that I’ve lost all my numbers and pictures. Real bummer!

We are hoping tonight will be better for dinner. Like maybe our tablemates won’t show up or missed the ship out of Tortola!!! I have threatened to start ‘picking’ an orifice myself when they pull out their toothpicks between courses! It’s bad enough that they all have a ‘group pick’ after the entrée and before dessert but last night it started after the Escargot. And we also had a nose blower! It is fairly disgusting. I think maybe I’ll have a double Martini plus the wine with dinner! Think it will help????

Dinnertime and I really did not want to go, but JoAn did, so I put on my slinky black pants and top and my hand painted, beaded duster and my heels. JoAn had on a beautiful black lace skirt and a floral, sequined top. We were DRESSED! Imagine our surprise when the men showed up. One had on a silk type mock turtleneck which was the best of the lot. The other two had on short sleeve, open necked (one open about 4 buttons down) shirts. One shirt was so thin you could see right through it. The women were acceptable although more casual than informal. Still, the women had taken the time to do make-up and hair so were more in tune with the dress code.

I decided a Pomegranate Martini might make them look better but I was wrong. Dinner was menu #9 and that one has never been my favorite. I had Shrimp Cocktail, Cream Dame Blanc Soup, and a Baked Potato with Spinach. And a second Martini. And the rest of my bottle of red wine. They didn’t look any better. And I was getting a little ticked!

After the entrée, when the six toothpicks came out, JoAn and I excused our selves and had our dessert sent to our cabins. Marble Cheesecake. (I wanted to stay and eat it at the table and pick my nose but JoAn vetoed that.) Darn!

I’ve had some fun writing this and while these peoples boorish behavior has certainly not ruined our cruise, I think it has made me consider how our behavior affects others. Yes, when I take the trouble to bring the required dinner clothes, dress in them even on nights when I, too, might rather be casual, the effort I put in to doing so is lost when I have to look across the table at people who are dressed for a backyard cookout. Or worse. If they don’t want to follow the dress code they should have the common decency to eat in the alternative dining area and not come to the main dining room.

If their culture says that it is permissible (and I can’t imagine it does) to pick ones teeth and blow ones nose while dining in a nice venue, with strangers, then I think they should realize that not every culture finds that behavior attractive, try to remember who they are traveling with and ‘cool it’ for the sake of people who find it offensive.

It is a great cruise and I hope that this experience will not deter me from trying a large table of strangers again. I know I do need a little break from it after this. I hope, in time, I will try it again. I’ve met some super people and made some great friendships by putting myself out there and taking a chance. I hope I am willing to do that again. At some point. And if this was not a table with such a super waiter and assistant maitre d’, I would have moved.

Off the soapbox!

Went to the casino for a little while after dinner but there wasn’t much action there. I gave them my $20 donation, thought about having another martini, but decided to come up to bed.

The Pomegranate Martini’s (but made with vodka and not Bombay Sapphire) are quite good!

Bye for now!

February 27, 2007

Started out today with a concern. I had suddenly awakened to the thought that JoAn has been having terrible heartburn at dinner. The light bulb finally went off and I realized that not only were our dinner tablemates horridly uncouth people, but I fear they (and my reaction to them) was actually making her sick. We discussed it on the phone and decided to change tables tonight. After all it is formal night. No telling what get-ups they will have on! Or how early the toothpicks will come out. Are there formal toothpicks?

Feeling better now that the decision was made, we went off to a dining room breakfast.

Thankfully, our tablemates there were cheerful with one man telling some pretty decent jokes. And some groaners!

This morning was slow with some time to talk about booking future cruises. The rumor is that the shareholder’s benefit will not be renewed so I want to book what I can before the May deadline. Combine that with the loss of the onboard credits (I know they will still be there, but in drastically reduced amounts) and our cruise prices are going up, up, up!

Went to the Senior Officer’s Cocktail Party at 11:30 in the Fleet Bar. We had a good showing of Officer’s, including the Captain, all of whom took time to socialize. We had a nice chat with Natalie, Tanushka, Jose and Carlos. Also had our share of Bloody Mary’s and a few hot hor d’hourves (ya’ll know I can’t spell that word!). Nice turnout. Not too big this time so we were able to chat.

There was some discussion about the one Captain’s Club Party held at 5:15 in the Celebrity Show Lounge on this trip. Seems that is a decision made by Miami and the Captain. Unfortunately, Tanushka is the one who gets the flack. I think they should have two, 5:15 and 7:45 as in the past and have them in a venue more conducive to mingling and dancing, like the Rainbow Room. I am sorry that some guests have chosen to blame this lovely lady who works very hard to make sure all Captain’s Club members are taken care of. If you get the chance to sail with Tanushka, please make an effort to get to know her. She is delightful!

Lunch was with two couples traveling together that we have eaten with before. I had my favorite soup, Apple, Celery, Coconut and the Pork Picatta with Sugar free Pecan Cheesecake for dessert. It was all great and very nicely served.

We finished lunch late and went to Battle of the Sexes Trivia. Apparently, I was wrong when I told the score last time I wrote about this. The women are 15 points behind as they have been. Hopefully tomorrow we’ll pull ahead. That cute Joey is still running the show! Makes going all the more worthwhile!

JoAn and I both made a stop by the casino. I didn’t win but I think JoAn doubled her money on the slot machines!

We also stopped for a chat with Camilla, the FCS Mgr, and booked three more cruises.

With the weight or another tense dinner off our minds, we decided to go to the Martini Bar for a drink before dinner. I really am developing a taste for the Pomegranate Martini made with vodka. People watching is much better there now that they have taken down the TV that was mounted outside the photo shop. I haven’t seen them hawking the Cruise in Review DVD, either. It used to run continuously on that TV and people would clog the aisle stopping to look at themselves!

All in all, the new photo vendor is good, however, on two formal nights, they have totally blocked off a hallway to take pictures. I don’t ever remember that to have happened before. Tonight it was the smallest part of the hallway between the photo shop and the Martini Bar. There is a floral arrangement there and a sign on the wall that says Martini Bar they are using as a backdrop. When they were taking a picture, everyone had to stop from both ways and wait. Last formal night it was the same on the other side of the ship. As both of these areas are used as access to the show lounge and the dining room, I thought it was an ill-conceived idea. Ralston, and some of the others, are very personable and kind of kid people out of being upset.

We were escorted to our new dining table, one of the round ones at the windows, by a

member of the dining staff. Paulo came over as did Antonio and Nickolina just to say

they were sorry we had to leave but understood. Our new tablemates were very gracious and received us with the good manners one would expect to find in a dining room on a cruise ship. It was delightful to see that all three men were dressed appropriately, as were their wives. Two of the couples are snowbirds from Montreal and the remaining couple is from the UK. Such a change from our previous table! Nice, mellow conversation about travel, bridge, wine, etc. The meal itself was wonderful. I started with a cup of the Apple, Celery, Coconut Soup from lunch, followed by Cream of Asparagus Soup, Caesar Salad, Filet Mignon and Lobster. Followed by the ‘Parade’ and the prerequisite Baked Alaska.

This dinner and the introductions of staff and crew made me think how sad this scene will be on the last trip. It is going to be sad enough anyway and I hope people who are on this final sailing will not be picking at every little thing and complaining. It’s the last sailing. Things aren’t going to be perfect. Things are going to go wrong. They will run out of things. Crew will have lots of duties in addition to their regular ones and may not pay quite as much attention to the guests as they normally would. There will be a lot of work involved in closing down a ship. I hope everyone booked on this cruise realizes that it will be different. It will be sad. It will NOT BE PERFECT! Some of us will be saying goodbye to a very dear friend and may not take kindly to having her picked apart. We will be making a final memory to remember the Zenith by.

Bye for now!

February 28, 2007

We set the clocks back to real time last night so we got an extra hour of sleep. JoAn and I had thought about going up on deck to have breakfast but decided on the dining room. I went up to the Cova to get my diet coke fix before breakfast and discovered a whale of a sale!!! They had lots of the Zenith stuff marked down. I elbowed my way in and out of the throng and left an armful with the boutique staff to be delivered to my cabin and headed to breakfast. Met JoAn and told her about the bargains so she had to go. I went in to the dining room to hold her a seat as we were getting very close to the 9:30 cut-off. She, also, managed to grab some bargains, leave them with the staff and made it in right as they were closing the doors!

I tried the Corned Beef Hash and Poached Eggs, which I don’t think I have ever had before on a ship. I liked it. The Orange Sections were very cold which made them better and the Pineapple Juice was not quite room temp as it normally is. Everything was very tasty.

Note to Texed: We really are trying to get up to the Waffle Bar! We know you will be in a depression if we miss the opportunity!

After breakfast and our buying spree (remember, we had a ‘no shopping’ pact?) we headed up to the pool and got a couple of hours of rays. Chairs and loungers were, of course, impossible. Everyone laughs about the Europeans and chairs. They come out way before 8 and save chairs for hours! Sometimes they save two chairs! One in the sun and one in the shade. Anyway, we finally found two chairs which we pulled in to sun and after about an hour got a lounger which we took turns with. Bothersome, but at least we got one!!!

The Captain is getting much more social on this ship. He and the Hotel Director and Staff Captain were very much in evidence on the pool deck, taking pictures with the passengers and shaking hands (or in my case, foot, as that’s what the Hotel Director touched on the way by). Very nice to see. Hope it continues.

Lunch was Chicken Liver Pate and Bar-beque Ribs with an Apple Tart and Vanilla Ice Cream. Seemed every one in the dining room was having ribs and they were good. Nice touch that they brought finger bowls with rose petals before dessert!

Did the casino after lunch, then Family Feud Trivia with Joey. I bailed on the Couch Potato Trivia. The questions are too obscure for me. Like, how deep was the lagoon in Gilligan’s Island? Give up? 2’, 4’, 6’ and 12’. I talked to Camilla at the Future Cruise Sales Desk and then headed on up to my cabin to start organizing for the packing to come! Hate the last day, hurried packing.

We missed the show. It was early and we had thought it was after dinner. Went to the Martini Bar and chatted with some nice ladies. One was the new retiree from the D. C. area who won the grand prize, door prize at our CC Party. She is getting a dvd made from her cruise pictures (a great prize, very generously donated by a gracious CC’er).

How cool that this is her retirement cruise? I think the working title is ‘From Retirement To Paradise’ or similar.

Dinner was, again, a delight. Shrimp Cocktail, Cauliflower Soup w/Pesto, Caesar Salad. Rack of Lamb and (by request) two of the Shrimp Provincial. We are finishing up some of our wine. Had a couple of glasses of the Nobilo Icon Sauvignon Blanc for the appetizers and then switched to one of JoAn’s unoaked Chardonnay’s. We have about a glass each left for tomorrow. Worked out nicely.

Not anything going on after dinner (and I’m not giving the casino back any more of my winnings!) so I came to my cabin with the idea of getting some more packing done. Turned out I was beat so went to bed.

For some reason I have not slept well on this cruise. Usually I sleep like a rock. This trip I am awake every hour or two. Makes me tired a good bit of the time. I didn’t think it was the bed, but maybe it is. We all know X’s bedding is one of it’s weak points!

Tomorrow is the LAST DAY! Seems like only a day or two when we were getting onboard in Tampa. Now we will be getting off in a day and a half. Some for the last time ever on the Z. Very sad!

Bye for now!

This is the last post until I am home. Hope you all have enjoyed reading as much as I have enjoyed writing. This was a wonderful cruise, even with our little blips!

Zenith is a wonderful ship. I just hope the complainers stay homeext time! Hey, you're on a ship. In the middle of the ocean. With people serving you. How bad could it be??? To me, it is always HEAVEN!

Bye for now!

I agree with you 110%-some folks are never happy. I am appalled at the rude, crude, and uncouth behavior you have described. I would have asked to change tables after a night of that-after all it is your vacation.

Glad to hear that you changed tables eventually and met some classy folks at your table. I have only had to change tables a couple of times in my cruising history but if need be, I will change it in a heartbeat.

The martinis sound great - I will have to try that (pomegranite) and it sounds as though you have had great service.

Sounds like you haven't allowed the crying game the power to ruin your cruise. Good for you-you are the glass half full kind of person. We need more like you. Enjoy the rest of your cruise...;)

Hi Gail !

Thanks for your wonderful posts. I enjoyed them very much.

I am sorry to hear about the rumor re: Shareholder benefit. While I wont worry about it just yet, it does sound like changes are ahead. At least we still have a chance to plan ahead if they decide to change or eliminate the Shareholder benefit. It would be nice if Celebrity let us know what was going on.

Sorry - I made a mistake in directing my answer to the wrong person - thank you. I should have directed the table comment to bububr.
