Mary's in Barbados, today!

Aplmac

Recommended Posts

Look who sailed in, around 7 a.m.

Mary doesn't often make it to Barbados, but she's here today!

Thought you guys might like to see her (one more time)...

I may post a few more, as I put them thru Photoshop.

--------------

Noticed she has a cleverly deceptive stern where, in profile

she appears to have a 'liner' stern

but as she presents her rear more and more in your direction,

you realize that the important bits that actually do stern duty at the waterline

are not at all what you thought you'd seen

(awful explanation, sorry!)

Hope you like my pics.

We will be on the ship the next time she comes to Barbados - November 15.

It looks like a delightful day there.

Thanks so much for the photos. ===> oh it's great fun, even if I do have to drag myself outa bed, early

Weather wasn't that great at 6:30 when she was coming in,

but it has improved by noon

and I'm seeing lots of obviously-Cunard tourists about Bridgetown.

Thanks also to the person above

who indicated she'll be around for the next few weeks..

..that means better opportunities for clear blue sky backgrounds

for more and better pics of Mary!

------------------

Tried to get a shot to illustrate that stern design I spoke of earlier,

but it's so darned dark under there that

even stretching it with Adobe Photoshop

doesn't being out much detail in the shadows, sorry.

Thanks aplmac for taking the time to get the photos and posting them here on the boards! :) Appreciate it very much . . .
That's okay... I do it because I maintain a small (and amateurish?) website at

http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/cncisland/bigships/btown.html

where I like to show off the Cruise Ships visiting Barbados

and I'll be adding a few choice ones of Mary later today

- probably these same ones I've posted here.

Of course they'll show quite a bit larger on the website

so do check it out in about 6hrs. time.

Mary's pics won't be up til then

coz I just got back home from The Wife dragging me around town,

and it's getting too hot to be productive just now

but after a brief afternoon snooze the old grey matter should improve

as temperatures cool a bit into the evening.

It's a tough life I know, but some poor sod's gotta live it

and it might just as well be me! :)

Alpmac, that's a great site. Thanks for sharing it, and for taking the photos. The photo of QM2 approaching Bridgetown harbour is spectacular.

If it's any help to you, my website automatically captures images from cruiseship webcams, and places them on a map to show whereabouts in the world they were taken.

I've got about 4,000 photos now (growing every day), including about 180 of QM2 and 270 of QE2.

There's a few from your part of the world here:

http://www.flickr.com/map/?&user_id=13967670@N03&fLat=13.248589&fLon=-60.787352&zl=11

The full QM2 collection is here, and the QE2 here.

Feel free to use any of my images on your site if you think they're worthy. Webcam photos are low resolution, and aren't as detailed as normal photos, but sometimes the results can be surprisingly good. (Sometimes they're surprisingly bad too :) )

You can add more photos to the collection by visiting http://ShipWatcher.com and clicking on the Camera icon to tell it to record the picture of your choice.

Best wishes, and please keep taking more photos!

Neil

Thanks, aplmac!

See you on 8th January!

Thanks for the kind words.

When you're on the island, my number's 427-0146.

Ask for David.

And for Neilius..here's another taken(I think..)

just after that approaching shot you like.

I just shoot 'em to death and sort them out when I get back home,

choosing sexy angles, best lighting etc.

(I just counted...I took 57 shots of QM2, this a.m.!!! crikey!

- showed you guys the best half-doz!)

I also took another 26 of Crown Princess

- she came in a half-hour before Mary did.

Thanks for your kind offers and suggestions but

since the nature and title of the site is cruise ships visiting Barbados,

I like to restrict content to self-taken shots, here in Barbados.

Hello. Is the spot you found to stand a public area? I used to think that the port area there was one of the best places to get ship shots. Since 911, with all the security, I think it is not easy to get past the shops to get the decent shots I am used to.

Add me to the list who will be there next week....visited last year on QM2 as well and had a terrific tour with Cameron Reid. So with all her visits planned thru the winter I"m sure you'll have some great shots to share of her there. She is one photogenic ship in my opinion....but then , I'm a tad biased!

Cheers, Penny

This will be my first time to Barbados and all we've got planned so far is some snorkling. Is there anything special we should do you can think of? OTOH, just walking around is nice, too. Is there anywhere near the ship to get some Bajan food?

PS: As in, I would rather hang out somewhere eating than circling thru a museum or riding in an air-conditioned bus.

If you check out the Barbados Port of Call page at

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=124

you should find lots of threads on the subject of What To Do

so I shall not repeat myself,

since you'll notice that one aplmac is a regular contributor 'over there'.

I stick in lotsa photos too,

so that should help you select What Beach near the Port.

Great pics!

What would you expect the temperature be in Barbados or beginning of December?

Well, I wasn't exactly looking for a beach, I was looking for a place to eat some of your real food. I want Pepperpot. But I'll have a look there, if you insist. And take special note of that aplmac guy, though I was secretly hoping for insider information. ;)

I like your photos, btw.

I hold back nothing. I call a spade a spade.

Pepperpot is really a Guyanese dish,

and is not often to be found here on this island

although it does pop up from time to time.

oh you just got lucky..

The Wife informs me that pepperpot is regularly available at Atlantis Hotel,

over on our scenic East Coast.

Come to think of it, this charming old hotel is probably your best bet

if it's local cuisine you're seeking.

It's one of the very few places where you'll find pumpkin fritters(yummy!)

and spinach balls.

They also have a good source of fresh fish

since the boats moor right in front the hotel.

Their desserts are also quite local and very nice:

coconut pie and Rum Cake(hope you're not driving back!)

. . . . . . . . .

Temperatures: in the upper 80s.

Ah! NOW he tells me! We were in Barbados on that ship!

Lovely head of your ports (where I managed to leave my bag sitting on a bench. I was within sight, but did not realize I had left it.) I ran back to find him and another gent standing guard, and they had already called security to come fetch it to hold it for me. So I reached in a pulled out a five to hand it to him, which he declned. Of course, I had no idea who he was! Head of the Ports! What a kind gent!

We met other Bajans who were equally wonderful.

Whatever you do, DO NOT book the shore ex to the Banks Brewery and the Mount Gay Rum distillery tour.

It basically is an infomercial, they rush you through (without even time to read the signs explaining things,) a corner of each facililty, where you can't really see much, then rush you to a (very limited) tasting and into the overpriced gift shop. I believe the bus driver left two or four people there (claimed to his dispatch they wanted to go to the beach) and ended up with two Princess Passengers on our bus. The Banks Brewery they could not get the beer taps working. They had a young fellow who acted like he knew what he was doing, but didn't. Then some poor older lady from the gift shop who knew nothing of how to start a new tank. I finally helped as people were getting hot, thirsty and cranky. I swear half of the talk at Banks was telling us of all of the varieties they no longer make! OTOH, the ride through the town from Mount Gay to Banks was pleasant.

David, next time through, I shall give you a buzz.

I have been testing my cell phone and Blackberry at every port. (just something I do so my company can verify it bills correctly. I am a cellular technician. Takes me 1 minute per port, and is a great way to check live usage and proper billing!)

Well,we are in port in St Thomas now. I finally got logged on to Wifi. I'm ready to throw this laptop out the window!

We did quite well in the Buccaneer "competition" last night.

Immigration today was rather painless. Got me out of the room early!

3 formals, not two, as was in the pre-docs.

Buccanner Ball (Which many MANY people dressed for and QUITE well I must say!) was on an INFORMAL night which was also the evening of the CWC cocktail party! Great planning! IMHO!

Karaoke was a HOOT (No I did not grace the passengers with my lilting voice) Singalongs also fun in Golden Lion and we have rather gotten to know the pianist, Greg Sampson.

We have come in second THREE TIMES in Pub Trivia, playing wth the knowledgeable CUNARDER (Ed, his wife Sandy and neice Katie)

We ran into Trish and Deb at the get-together, Have run into Lisa and John twice. Need to find Lorraine (don't have her cabin number and she did not show at the get-together.) I will try to arrange another meet-up, and get it into the programme. Also plenty of others did show up for the meet. Will post names later.

We have thousands of pictures (and have been printing and handing out copies as we have a small photo printer with us) have made many MARVELOUS friends, All Commodore staff are FAB! Julie is wonderful, and we have already given a You're a Star card to Marco. Ship model needs rehab. Only midship lights are working and they don't turn on and off at various times (Like people going to bed) as they used to.

Going to log off now, so I can go get my laundry. Will try to log on again later.

Karie
