What is the best kept secret on the Sun?

Hello Everyone,

I'm a first time cruiser and want to make sure that we make the most out of our cruise. What do you feel is the bet kept secret on the Sun that most people don't know about. Can be anything from food, entertainment, or activities, etc. Thanks so much!

For me, it's the Pacific Heights Restaurant. It's healthy choice but don't let that fool you. No fee for this one but reservation is required. It is underused and a great place high up on the ship for a nice quiet meal.

I would say Pacific Heights as well plus Las Rambles.

Sports Bar menu (i.e. fish and chips) is free - right?
yep, that too. Most of the new NCL fleet have Blue Lagoon for those comfort foods. Because the Sun doesn't have Blue Lagoon they serve a similar menu in the sports bar. In fact one night DD and I did the tapa thing about 5 or 6pm and then around 9 or so we hit the sports bar for fish and chips. She had a tuna melt I think, me, the fish and chips. One more thing, the casino (btw is one of the looser ones I have seen) offers a light buffet (snacks) about 11pm. That is fun as well.

Great Belgian Waffles in Pacific heights for breakfast. Not many people know about it and go to the regular buffet. They also have other breakfast items....

We had pasta made to order for lunch, but can't remember what restaurant that was at...

And as mentioned before. Tapas at Las Ramblas (I love to go around 5:30pm and then sit in the outdoor cafe to watch the sunset).

And also again Dinner at Pacific Heights, light cuisine but you wouldn't know it and to me better than the main restaurants.

No one has mentioned Il Adagio! Not only is it a beautiful restaurant with great views, but the food is wonderful!

We also loved the Great Outdoors Cafe and Las Ramblas for breakfast and lunch. And the Windjammer is a really nice bar.

I did remember it but couldn't remember the proper spelling. LOVED the 40 garlic Alfredo. Now I'm drooling like Homer Simpson. Best Italian fare ever and lovely atmosphere. Do you think I could place a takeout order?? ;)

It's basically an extension of the Garden Cafe (buffet) at the very aft end of the deck. Seating is outside, but most of it is under a large canopy. At mealtimes, it often serves a pared-down selection of the food that's being served inside the Garden Cafe. At some other times, you can get different snacks here when the Garden Cafe is closed between meals.

As far as "secret" experiences on the Sun are concerned, I'd also mention Il Adagio. It is probably the best restaurant on the ship. But it is now so low in the popularity stakes that they are only charging $10 per person to eat there. On our last cruise, we were there twice; I would not have been disappointed to have eaten there every night.

One more: The open deck outside the Observation Lounge at the very forward end of the ship. Often too windy to use when the ship is under way, of course, but it's a great place to stand and take in the view when in port.

Just off the Sun yesterday.

The chicken wings (free) in the Sports bar, served 5:30pm on. Some of best wings I've had in a long time.

Prizm...band that plays in Dazzles. When there have an audience, they're very entertaining.

Il Adagio was the best meal of the trip. I'm partial to Italian food!

The make your own omelette stations at the Great Outdoors Cafe. People go to the buffet and don't realize that to have an omelette made to order just go out the doors and make a right! there are actually two omelette stations, one on each side of the great outdoors cafe.

just bumping
A slight aside, Babygirl5408, but you might want to have a look at this part of the CC Guidelines:-
Please do not manipulate postings on the boards by "bumping" topics to the top of the forum. Members will assume something of value has been posted, only to find that the newest posting is nothing more than a "bump post". This only wastes everyone's time.

  • 3 years later...

Would love to learn more about tapas and las ramblas (spelling)?

What type of tapas do they serve? Hours? Is there a cost?

Also, is there any place to get sushi onboard? (hours/cost)?

Trina

Your spelling is correct. Las Ramblas serves during the lunchtime hours as a soup and sandwich locale. Sometime between then and early evening, it opens as a lovely bar with small dishes. Typically they have three or four hot dishes and three or four cold ones. I recall marinated cheese, empanadas, calamari, etc. There is not cost for the food but of course there is for the beverages. They serve quite tasty white and red sangria though I wish it wasn't quite so expensive.

For new readers of this post that you just awakend from it's three and half year nap, be advised that Pacific Heights is no more:mad: though I am looking forward to trying Moderno on our upcoming cruise. Also, the menu in Il Adiago has changed significantly according to other threads and now more closely resembles the italian restaurants on other NCL ships:mad: but hopefully they haven't changed the beautful room and have keep at least my favorite the Osso Bucco - that alone will be worth the $10 fee.

The secrets I know about on the Sun (that haven't already been mentioned), you need to know about before you book. She has some extraordinary rooms - the bow balconies on Deck 11 which we will be enjoying for the first time in October appear to be huge, the stern facing mini suites are larger than the others on Sun or other NCL ships and the almost square inside cabins forward are really large and well laid out - no bumping of the doors like in most cabins.

I agree with you! I love this place!

We agree, (except your Giants still have me crying... Rangers fan).

Just off the Sun. I have a secret. You can use the steam room, sauna and showers FREE in the spa. Sure wasn't advertised and they weren't very helpful explaining how it all works. But it's there.

We booked 9003 - a bow room. Wavered between that one (or its twin, 9203), and the one closest to those (one in from the side). The 'one in' ones definitely have a much larger balcony, so was tempted by that, but the room configuration looks really strange on the deckplans.

Anyone have any insight to offer?

Seems like they mentioned that in the handbook in the stateroom
