Can't believe we always missed this....

Recommended Posts

kidless, off topic but thanks for the link to the song and video. Having had a son deployed in Iraq for 15 very long months, it brought tears to my eyes.

We were on the first of 3 busses late getting back to the ship at the Panama Canal - the last one even had a police escort. The Captain was not pleased but he held the ship for us. I was very glad it was a ship's sponsored shore excursion or we would have been left behind.

I'm sorry but I have seen people run to get the ship and it is hillarious! Call me mean or whatever but it is funny!!! :D In this day and age, we have cell phones, ipods, watches, and mouths (to ask people what time it is) to tell us the time! If you miss the ship, it is your own fault and you ought to be laughed at. If it was me who was running down the pier waving my hands around like a maniac, I tell you now, you have my permission to laugh at me because I would most likely be laughing at myself. If I missed the ship, yeah I would be mad but it would be my own fault! You just need to be responsible with time! If you are running to catch the ship, I would like to thank you on behalf of all of us mean people for giving us a good laugh. And if you miss the ship due to your own carelessness, it just sucks to be you, doesn't it??? :p

I LOVE that the cruise ships are so strict and do not wait for people! In fact that's what we modeled our travel business on! (We do roller coaster tours around the World!)

I'm sorry, but if 99% of people could make it back, why should we inconvenience all them because you couldn't be bothered to give yourself some extra time to make it on time!

Of course I agree with everyone else about serious circumstances, but this is not the case in most instances!

Leaving Bermuda last year on the Empress a couple roared up on a scooter at the last minute--dropped the scooter and ran for the ship. They made it but I did wonder if they would be charged for the scooter if someone took it.

It is hard to be sympathetic for these folks....when many I have seen are staggering and weaving....or loaded down with shopping bags. Hey pay attention to what your doing and where your suppose to be or you may be the dumb a$$ of the day!

I am compulsively late! :D That said - when it matters - I'm there and early. When on a cruise - I always get back extra early. I really really hate waiting for the late comers. I agree with those who mentioned the self important individuals who think the ship should be held for them should be left behind - I would probably laugh with everyone else - but to see someone actually left behind - that would be upsetting.

We were a bunch of "runners" in Jamaica.. we got stuck in a car smash a few miles out of the port and no one was going anywhere - we left for the ship with 3 hours to go before it left, so sometimes things do go wrong and its not always down to people just forgetting or getting drunk.

However, I also watch people running for it... yes its funny whilst they make it, but when they don't its heartbreaking.

I realize that taking a photo copy of your passport into port with you isn't a bad idea and not letting one person carry all the important things like id and credit cards. Just imagine if his wife had everything in her bag he'd really be in trouble.

That would have been a fairly dumb idea in St Maarten. No one can fly into the US (from a foreign country) without a valid passport.

People think having a copy of a passport will help - it does very little. When you go to the consulate to get a replacement passport, you can show them your copy, and it will make things a *little* easier getting your replacement. If you are lucky, you will be able to leave the country in a day or two. If it's late on a Friday, you may get to tack on a few days for the weekend... Bottom line, take your passport with you!

Your other option is to find a way to US soil - either swim, or hideaway on a small boat to a US territory (USVI, Puerto Rico)

I guess I'm also sick and sadistic. I would cheer The Runners (Runners haven't yet been left behind, they might still make it!) and that would be funny.

Those that are left behind, I don't know about actually Funny or Laughing at them, depending on what they do. Honestly, if my own stupidity had me missing the ship, I might do something comical for those watching and to get myself over it - wave back, yell "Say hello to ____ (next port, that night's entree or entertainment...) for me!"

Crying and screaming won't change a damned thing, and won't make me feel too sorry for those doing that.

Kinda makes you rethink paying the higher excursion fees thru the ship, eh? Um, well, maybe some of them...

On all our cruises I don't know if when we pulled out of ports if we were on the wrong side of ship or busy doing other things. But on this last cruise we were port side in St Maarten there was a Carnival ship docked next to us.

When it was getting close to sail time and the ships were blowing their horns everyone on both ships seemed to be out on the balconies looking out to-wards the security checkpoint coming onto the pier. You'd hear some one scream "WE GOT A RUNNER"

The crowd would go wild as we watched the person bags in tow and usually a wife several yards behind running for the ship. As we got closer to sail time they'd send golf carts out to pick them up, the crowd would go nuts and it was so fun to watch.

One poor soul missed RCCI the golf cart got him up to the employees entrance just as they were pulling up the ramp! He waved to the ship and we figured his wife was going to be one unhappy camper for the rest of the day. Carnival had the last of the runners and we ended up pulling away first so figure that meant we WON!....

We will be sure to always watch this even if our cabin is on the wrong side we will hit the rail on the Lido cause it was just too funny!!! :D

This is a favorite activity onboard....especially in St. Maarten and, the best of all, Cozumel.

It's part of the entertainment for a lot of people....including your's truly. It's worth the price of a balcony sometimes........

It would be a rare day that I would find humor in someone missing the boat. And I have a pretty warped sense of humor. I don't get it.

I don't think anyone was laughing at the man who missed the boat but we were getting a kick out of the runners. :D

Exarolf> Thanks for the info....we were told a copy was good that you wouldn't want to take the passport in case it was lost but what you are saying makes more sense.

Katink> Your welcome and Thank you for your son's service. My son was there too at the beginning of the war and I know how hard on you it must be my prayers are with you.

OK, after our last airport (almost) disaster, I'm feeling a little sympathy for SOME late arrivers...

1) Airline 1 cancels our flight, but books us on another carrier. We are to go to that counter the next morning to get our boarding passes, because it's too late for them to email them to us (or something like that).

2)We get up and out, extra early, as always, when headed to the airport. Decide to park in the expensive, closer-up parking to save time (erring on the side of caution).

3)Monorail from expensive parking is broken. We WALK, with all our luggage, to the terminal.

4)Carrier #2 has never heard of us. Has to call carrier #1, completely rebook and reissue tickets, etc., etc. 25 minutes. That's OK - we get there EARLY.

5) Get on the monorail to get to the airside. Monorail sits for 5- 10 minutes until the maintenance guy gets there to push the magic button to make it go.

6) Get to airside. A line that puts Space Mountain to shame snakes toward the security.

7) Get in the line. When we are about 6 from the front, they call our flight. We finally get to the screening. Where

8) THREE, count 'em THREE of our group is randomly selected for the "special" screening. Son has a laptop bag with a gazillion pockets. Everyone apparently has to be wiped and checked for explosive residue.

9) Husband tries to hold the gate open. Wife races, shoeless, to the gate. Boys race back to help laptop boy grab all his stuff after the screening. Gate personnel trying to shut the door. Finally, last boy races in, the door SLAMS behind us. We all RACE onto the plane and the door SLAMS behind us.

Meanwhile all the folks are probably wondering why we hadn't gotten there early enough.

The funny counter intuitive thing about this is you should leave the copy of your passport in your safe, and bring your passport. You can generally get back on the boat (some ports want ID) with your SeaPass. Once you get back to the US, and go to immigration, they can trust your drivers license - or send you to immigration hell - either way, you are back in the US...

I did immigration hell once coming back from Mexico - my drivers license was left on a sail boat (which was motoring back) - I had no ID, so I got to sit 3 hours while they researched me, pulled up my passport, and then asked a few questions, and set me free...

Its pure entertainment watching people come back to the ship after a day in port. We've never seen anyone running for the ship. Only once we waited for people who were out on a RC excursion and had transportation trouble getting back so we waited about 45 minutes.

I really don't have any sympathy for those who are chronically late or fly by the seat of their pants.

My DH and I actually saw some runners on our first cruise a couple years ago (Western Caribbean). They came running up the pier just as the ship pulled away. People were yelling and cheering for them, but they didn't make it. It was sad to see them left behind and I felt bad. But THEN, somehow they managed to get on a motor boat (I don't know if it was thanks to RC or just a local boat owner) and the boat chased the ship out to sea. Sure enough, our ship slowed down and opened the side entry and let the people on. I was amazed!

I am not preaching here, but giving my opinion:

I just have a hard time finding entertainment over someone else's misery. Call me kindhearted, but it's just not very funny. Of course, I've been watching this for a very long time, and it's been the same since cruise #1. These people have pretty much ruined their vacation and finances doing this, and I feel sorry for them.

On a lighter note:

Docked in St. Thomas several years ago, we were on the other side of the pier from the Disney ship, and the captains had a good time playing dueling horns. It was funny, considering Disney was dueling with "Wish Upon a Star".

Another cruise, we were parked across from the Explorer, lots of us hanging out and looking at the other ship, and the nice gentleman in the Grand Suite decided to moon the lot of us! Now, THAT was entertaining.

Another time, also in St. Thomas, we were pulling out along side a Carnival ship, and they were catcalling to us "we get to stay longer", while someone on our ship called back "yeah, but our food's better" (it was in those days; maybe not now).

I'm with you. I love the dueling ships.

I've been on them when they start trying to out horn each other.

And I've also been on Magic when my friend who was standing on MY balcony decided to flash the dock workers. I told her "Oh great...right now security is outside counting balconies to figure out a cabin number and it's MY cabin"
