IBookHePays Posted December 31, 2008 #302 Share Posted December 31, 2008 I love when life surprises you like that! I moved to San Francisco from New Jersey in 1976, and the first person I talked to (to ask for directions) was from my home town!
alwalaska Posted December 31, 2008 #303 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Thanks for the reports. It is fun sailing along. Are the always available options of chicken and steak still available on the menus? If not, can you still ask for them? Last couple of reports that have come back from ships didn't have the always available options on them.
Lynn the Cruiser Posted December 31, 2008 #304 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Wow...I just got finished reading all 16 pages(when I began, there was only 14 pages!) First of all, I am soooooooooo jealous!! When I was on the Liberty this summer, they were talking about this cruise at the C&A party. If only I were retired!! Of course I would also have to think of my dog and elderly parents. I don't think I could be away from them that long. Carol, what a small world about being seated with people from your area! I know the area well as my DD went to St. Joe's and still lives in Philly(Roxborough). Not to get off subject, but where does your DD go to grad school? Have a great cruise and I will be checking daily (maybe hourly) for updates and can't wait to see pics!! Have a Happy New Year!!!!!!!:D:D:D
Arizona Cruz Chic Posted December 31, 2008 #305 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Whew, you've got to be a speed reader to keep up on this thread! :) :) "small world" about your lunch table mates!!! I too would go buy a small hair dryer.....most likely better than the ones on-board anyway. Can't wait until you start posting pictures!! ***

crusinanan Posted December 31, 2008 #308 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Ok, this is one of those weird truth-is-stranger-than-fiction stories. On Monday, we were at sea, so the dining room was open for lunch. Liz and I decided to eat there. For anyone who doesn't know: Lunch and breakfast are open seating in the dining room. Someone escorts you to an open table. A crew member started to lead us to one table, then quickly realized that those people weren't English-speakers. She changed course, and led us to another table, over by the window. We sat down, and started to get acquainted. First, I noted that the man (it was a family of four) was wearing a cap that said "Ocean City, New Jersey" on it. I asked if they lived there. He said "no, but we had a boat there", or something like that. I asked if they lived in New Jersey, and he said, "No, Pennsylvania." I said, "Oh, where in Pennsylvania?" He said, "Philadelphia.". I said, "Where in Philadelphia?" He said, "Well, not *in* Philadelphia.....we live in the suburbs." I said, "WHERE?" And he said "Bala Cynwyd." People, Bala Cynwyd is so close to Merion that they are in fact almost the same place, just different zip codes. Neither really *exists*, except as zip codes. Both are just parts of Lower Merion Township. They live about ten blocks from us! Their kids are in 10th & 8th grade, and attend the same schools that my kids did. They have many of the same teachers. We know many of the same people. So, to summarize: We are on a ship currently sailing with more than 3,600 passengers. There are some 40 countries represented on this cruise. Thousands were eating in the Windjammer at that time, hundreds in the main dining room. And we were seated at a table with people whom I probably see around home every day without even realizing it. How do you like THAT?!??!?!?!?  what a small world !!!! I am enjoying your posts so much thanks for letting us sail along :D have a great new years eve you deserve it:) cant wait to meet you in April Penny

I only have 8..I think you can change your settings to more post per pages..If you want to that is...16 pages just seems to exausting lol..:) Yes, this is adjustable through the User CP link, then click on Edit Options (or just click that link to go straight to it), and scroll down to the proper box. I have long had mine set to 40, the max, to minimize having to reload pages. It does get a little confusing since most people use the default of 20, and for them, threads have twice the number of pages that I see. rubrrick Posted December 31, 2008 #315 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Gary Davies from Liverpool. :) Gary is a great guy!! Unfortunately, he is getting off in Barbados. I have sailed with him when he was the F&B Manager on the Jewel. Sounds like you are having a wonderful time...........and from what I hear, it's going to get better for the SA trip. Gary told me that there has been a ton of planning going into making this "the" event of the year. I wish that I could be with you for all three legs..........but happiness is doing at least one!!:) Rick
rednancy1 Posted December 31, 2008 #316 Share Posted December 31, 2008 I actually feel better knowing that I have the YF vaccination. I would HATE to get Yellow Fever!!!!!! (and I am the BIGGEST baby on earth about getting shots - it wasn't bad at all) They say that Costa Rica won't let you off the ship without proof of vaccination, but others have said that they just waltzed off the ship with no problem. Pick your answer. :) We got off the ship in Costa Rica and weren't asked about YF shots. :o But that was 2 years ago. Maybe it's different today. Not really my choice of health disorder. Think I'd rather have a high colonic like the GR people. :p:D:eek:
Rare NorbertsNiece Posted December 31, 2008 #317 Share Posted December 31, 2008 I promise that I've read every post at least once..... but I must have missed the bit about how the upgrade fairy visited..... can someone enlighten me? rubrrick Posted December 31, 2008 #318 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Costa Rica is one of our ports. Our cruise originates in Santiago, Chile. There is so much confusion on the YF vaccine. When do you show your "proof"? If I have to get one I will............but if not I'd rather not. How about not getting off in Costa Rica.........would that work? I'm really enjoying following your awesome journey and look forward to all your posts in the coming days.....weeks.....months of this once in a lifetime trip. :) You are better off with the YF immunization. It's totally painless. The nurse that gave us our injections took less than 5 seconds. In and out, with a tiny needle. Never felt a thing. I got mine on December 22nd and have had no after effects.:D;) Rick

We have visited Costa Rica from Mexico and the YF is not required. It is required if you are coming from Brazil and Chile........both countries that the ship will visit before reaching Costa Rica. That's why I got my YF shot last week. I join Bobbie in Santiago.....Valparaiso to be exact, which is Chile, and off we go to Peru, and then Costa Rica. brn2crz Posted December 31, 2008 #320 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Darn it, I was hopeful you were going to say missed me!:D So, where have you been and why? jc Of,course...But that's our secret.. Lets see..It started with a mild PCD after the last cruise...then the new house we were building..the builder got in some major legal trouble and left the country, our house was in limbo for so long and we were in a rental...crazy moving etc...We did 2 land based vacations between Feb and July, and resolved the housing problem by completly moving across town, including the home business...which is booming...and then I became a Mod on a local board....and gosh...before your knew it...I was off my CC habit...But...I am coming back...slowly I think...Plus,I am so not excited about my Spring Break Cruise on the Conquest...for so many reasons.. lol
Fran Harp Posted December 31, 2008 #321 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Rick - we're on the Radiance Santiago to LA in April and have been told we don't need the Yellow Fever shot. If so we'll get it but if not I'd rather not. Please enlighten me as to what you know. Also wondering about the Mariner pre-inaugural festivities???? The board is pretty quiet about anything that's happening. We're really looking forward to Mariner's arrival in LA and will definitely be sailing on her soon. At the moment, if you are going in to Colombia, and/or Panama, you have to have the Yellow Fever shot. We are on EN in January, and the directive was issued from the Panama Consular Authority etc, regarding the vaccination. Better to be safe, especially if you port in either of those places and want to get off the ship. Fran in Toronto
Fran Harp Posted December 31, 2008 #322 Share Posted December 31, 2008 PAPER TOWELS PLEASE!!!I need to clean the coffee off of my monitor!!! I think I encountered one of them on the Carnival Ecstasy; perhaps they've transferred?! RP, that was my feeling as well - just hoisting a glass of glogg here and almost spewed it on the laptop. Carol - you know what your assignment is, now - remember. You *did* sign in blood..and I have it right here. kerrydee Posted December 31, 2008 #323 Share Posted December 31, 2008 The Monday night show, Spectrum singing MOTOWN, was FANTASTIC. Lizzy and I got there early, as we had promised ourselves, and sat plunk in the middle of the front row. These guys were FABULOUS. I knew every song and almost every word, and sang along and danced (in my seat - my daughter would have KILLED me if I had gotten up to dance!) So, they see that I'm bopping along with them, and they started to sing "I'll Be There (Reach Out )"............ and we REACHED OUT to one another - one guy leaned all the way down from the stage and grabbed me! Then they introduced themselves, and one said that he had lived in Philadelphia for a long time, and I, well, I whooped. Loudly. It was great! What a wonderful show! Spectrum performs all over - afterwards this same guy told me that they had played last year with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops at the Kimmel Center. Last night there were two ice shows, so no main theatre show. Just the auction and the Love & Marriage Show, which I already told you about. it's a shame you're not having a good time.;)

Once upon a time, when you were looking for a 4th roomie, I tried to talk my DH into letting me go for 45 days, but he wouldn't go for it...darn it!:( Maybe next time. I'm really enjoying reading your live reports...thanks for letting me live vicariously through you!:) Have a great cruise and a great New Year...I look forward to your next report and eagerly await your photos!
