Rci fleet drink prices .

Recommended Posts

Hi Julie

If it was because of the VAT then why didnt they charge the higher drink prices when the Navigator first started sailing from Southampton a couple of years ago?

Oh I hadn't thought of that! Perhaps it IS just RCL trying to make more money out of us Brits then. I don't understand why it should just be ships from Southampton though, Vision was definitely no more expensive.

Just hope they don't do the same thing with Eclipse next year.

We were just on the Radiance of the Seas cruise from Santiago, Chile to San Diego. Drink prices were higher than those we had on our Sept '08 b2b on the Jewel (Baltics and TA).

The drink menu did note..........in small print at the bottom of the page.................that a 15% gratuity is included in the price of the drink.

Prices I can confirm............$10.25 for an appletini.......$9.25 for Fosters.........$5.25 for Coors Light.........$6.25 other beers. Plus another $3.25 if you wanted a souvenir glass.

A bloody mary on Liberty was $5.75(£3.80), a straight up Martini was $8.75 with a 20% disc at happy hour.

Note from your post that 25ml measures on P.O but on Liberty they are poured and get at least 75ml measures. Certain pubs are 35ml in Spirits.

Cokes and sodas $2.75 a can.

Any more info will gladly provide.

As Liz has remarked many U.K`s are lacking in "tipping culture" and I think RCL has to build it into the cruise fare, to "disguise" the service charge if it is to contiue to subsidise the crew salaries this way.

I just returned fron NOS Ta Ft.Lauderdale-Barcelona. I bought cigarettes for a friend I was told not only was the the price going up as soon as we departed from the ship on cigarettes but also all of the booze including mix drinks, & beers. I do not understand why the increases when their prices are high enough.

You can put whatever twist you like on it,

P&O a pint of beer £2.60 (Stella Artois a premium brand)

RCCL a pint of beer £5.00 (approx dollar equivalent for cheap jack Heiniken)

Both lines must stock up in the UK, both should pay the same tax.

Now tell me which line is profitering anyone!

But at the end of the day I will put up with the price because I prefer RCCL's cruise. But reserve the right to complain here.

:cool:Hi Guys ,

I started this post just out of curiosity , it has brought out some very strong reactions and views . As always I do agree with most of them . The common theme seems to be that R.C.I. are ripping us off with very high alcohol prices when departing from the UK compared to other cruise lines that have very much reduced bar prices than Royal Caribbean . Lets not get into a slagging match about how bad Royal Caribbean are because in actual fact they are a very good cruiseline .

My aim is to let them see and indeed read these posts ( Because they do ! ) and show them the feeling of the people who cruise fron Southampton . The cost of a pint will not stop us from booking a uk based cruise but it does hurt our pocket .

Having said all of the above , I will be on Indy next Saturday with a pint in my hand at every oppertunity but will also be on Fred Olsen`s Boudicca in one months time . Where upon it will cost me only £2.60 for a pint , that will be a much more relaxed and pleasurable cruise . Thankyou to everyone who has put their views forward so far and keep on posting as Royal Caribbean have to know how we all feel .

Power to the people ...:cool::cool:

I understand that it is the case that VAT has to be charged when cruising in Europe and it is at an average rate of the European countries. This is EU regulations. It was definitely charged when we sailed Brilliance out of Barcelona and was at a rate of 16%. This may explain the higher costs of drinks as the VAT will have already been added, so the price charged includes this. Unlike in the US where the sales tax is added at the register, in Europe the price already includes tax.

When we were last on FOS out of Miami, sales tax of 7% was added before we sailed into international waters. Has this been reduced to 6% now?

..

Sorry My misquote, Florida state sales tax is 6%, this is what is charged at PC, I forgot that Miami Dade county, Miami, adds a 1% county surcharge to the Florida tax, so yes, you're right it is 7% in Miami

Last September RCCL increased drink prices by up to 30%

the prices on the fleet in the Med EUROPE and Baltic was increased, to those mentioned in this thread.

I was informed it was fleet wide

This was because of the Dollar doing so badly against these currencies.

What has happened now that the dollar have improved the prices have remained high.

The competitiors P&O NCL & CUNARD are now cheaper because they did not increase as much.

Out of the Southampton port the RCCL prices include the usual 15% tip in the price.

So the staff still get there tip!

Example Draught beer Navigator/Brilliance $6.50 plus 15% TIP = $7.48

On the Independance out of UK $7.50

Lava Flow $9.00

Ultimate Cocktail $12.00

Mango Mai tai $7.50

Pyrat's Hurricane $11.00

Glass house wine $6 .35

these price include the auto 15% tip.

To the British these prices are nearly twice what they pay at home or on P&O AND 50% more than Cunard.

It has nothing to do with UK not tipping or VAT just the fact that RCCL does not realise that Brits love to drink but will not be riped off.

If they reduced the drink price to there competitors they would run out and not lose repeaters

A Cruise critic did not believe these prices and thought $10 a drink was usual.

Thanks for the clarification. I just thought that the rate may have been reduced in this economic climate, just like our VAT has been reduced from 17.5% to 15%. Not that 1% makes much difference on the price of a drink before we get into international waters!

This is a quote from the Cruise Critic news page.

Is Jo Rzymowska on this planet! Or just so out of touch with his UK customers. Come on bring down your drink prices in line with P&O.

"Royal Caribbean which has just signed up Independence of the Seas to sail year-round from Southampton in 2010, also has confidence in Europe. Jo Rzymowska, general manager and associate vice president for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. in the U.K. and Ireland, says, "U.K. cruisers who face the unfriendly rate of the pound against the euro are finding that the onboard dollar currency makes for an easier-to-swallow exchange rate, and so their holiday pound goes further. "

There is uk vat on all drinks on ships out of and returnins to southhapton, the reason is the ships are staying within europe

If that were so then why are the drink prices on Vision not increased as she leaves from UK port also...same with the Jewel.

It appears at the moment that the Indy is only one that has the much higher drink prices when sailing from Southampton.

I have just found my receipts from Independence last August and I was charged the exact prices that you are quoting here, so they must have increased before September. Of course at that time we were getting 2 dollars for a pound so they didn't seem so expensive then!

I've also noticed that different bars charged different prices, an Appletini in Boleros was $10, one in Olive or Twist was $10.25. In April an Appletini on Explorer was $9.20 with tip. As you say, on Independence a tip is included in the price.

I don't think RCL will ever reduce their prices in line with the others. We've noticed before that they are also more expensive than the other US lines (apart from Celebrity who charge even more), however we prefer their ships so think its a price worth paying.
