Is a VISA needed?

Yes, as commonly discussed here, you need an Australian visa. Very easy to get, done on the internet. As commonly recommended here, use the the official Australian government website. That is the easiest and cheapest way to do it.

What took you so long? Just joking!

I know of one person who forgot their ESTA and was applying while in the checkin queue. Unfortunately for them the system wasn't playing nice and they missed out on the flight to the US.
