Flying to Sydney from the US and cruising to New Zealand and Australia. Do we need to get a Visa or do anything different than traveling anywhere else?

Yes, as commonly discussed here, you need an Australian visa. Very easy to get, done on the internet. As commonly recommended here, use the the official Australian government website. That is the easiest and cheapest way to do it.

It took us less than 15 minutes to get our Australian visa online from https://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ETAS3/etas.

We got that information from the wonderful cruise critics forums !

Yes you need a visa.

 

Not sure what you mean by "or do anything different...."???

Maybe means need an invitation, or attend interview, as some countries require.

I know of one person who forgot their ESTA and was applying while in the checkin queue. Unfortunately for them the system wasn't playing nice and they missed out on the flight to the US.
