JMHamburg and others please help with Hamburg

Recommended Posts

@rudicruiser

I visited some years ago BallinStadt. I was at Ellis Island too and thought it was great to see the start here. But i found it a little bit boring.

http://www.ballinstadt.de/anfahrt/?lang=en

i used the Metro ( S3 ) to Veddel.

by ferry -> click the Maritime Circle line

and then you are at their hompage:

http://www.maritime-circle-line.de/routen/

all places they stop, at the Wunderland too.

http://www.maritime-circle-line.de/fahrplan/

timetable ( scroll down for Sommer / Summer )

it is not like the other ferry, it is like a hopp on hopp off ferry ( cost 16 Euro per Person http://www.maritime-circle-line.de/tickethaus/preise/ ). The other ferry are part of the metro system and you can use them with the same day or group ticket. The number 10 is not the ferry number. The Landungsbrücken is big an there are numbers to find the place where your ferry is. The maritime circle line is at pier/bridge 10 at the landungsbrücken.

For example here you can see the numbers of the ferry line 62 or 72.

http://www.hadag.de/hafenfaehren.html

I didn´t used the maritime circle line myself. Maybe someone other can write more.

found the english Homepage:

http://www.maritime-circle-line.de/englisch/

click at the flyer, it has all information ( Miniatur Wunderland is the next building to Hamburg Dungeon, same place)

Hi all,

We are docking at Altona dock on News Years Eve.

Does anyone know where the shuttle bus drops off?

Hoping it is close to city centre malls.

The ship is staying until early New Year's Day morning. Will we be able to see the fireworks from the ship?

Thanks for any info.

Sue

Hi Sue. I know your post was last year, but were you able to view the fireworks from the ship on Altona berth? I'm thinking of booking this year's New Years cruise (on Aurora) as a back to back with Christmas. Looking on the port site, it appears the berth is Altona this year too.

Where did the shuttle drop off? (I'd look on the p&o site but annoyingly they've removed the shuttle info )

Thanks GBM

Fireworks are all over the city, and you can see the main fireworks at Landungsbrucken from the Altona pier on ship depending you get a good position on deck.

I am flying on July 4 from Hamburg to Oslo on a small airline. I would like to buy some wine as a gift. Should I buy it in Hamburg airport, on the plane or in Oslo airport? I'm assuming they have duty free shops.

Since alc and everything else is more expensive in Scandinavia, you may consider purchasing it in Hamburg.

Hi

Well at long last our journey to Hamburg will start in a week. We have 4 days before our Norway cruise to explore the Hamburg area. I am wondering if the Sternschanze area is an interesting area to explore? We are avid photographers and I have noticed a lot of interesting graffiti and architecture there. Any advice on time of day, safety and if walkable from the dock area?

Also any other ideas of what to see or miss?

Thanks so much.

Hi happy_traveller,

i´m on the jader after your cruise, bring her safe back to Hamburg.

Sternschanze is a interesting area, you can google "Rote Flora Hamburg", maybe this helps you to understand the area. i had never any problems in Hamburg, Sternschanze or St. Pauli. But in this area Sternschanze / St. Pauli comes many different sorts of people together, poor and rich people, homeless people ( maybe they ask you to give a euro, be nice and say, sorry, no ) and in the evenings many party people with a lot of alc. So keep your eyes open but like i wrote, i had never a problem there at day or night ( also people who wants to steal your pocket, keep your pocket safe ), I only would not go to the Sternschanze at days with demonstrations.

You can walk from the harbor to the reeperbahn an the St. Pauli Stadium Millerntor:

Great information, thanks!!

F.Y.I. - on Saturday July 15 in the St. Pauli area, the Schlagermove Parade is taking place. It is listed as a "Festival of Love". It sounds like a 70's festival w/ 45+ colorfully decorated music trucks. Expect large crowds of colorfully dressed people in the area into the evening!!

@JMHamburg or others familiar with the area. Is it possible (safe) to walk directly east from the airport (crossing Zeppelenstraße/Bundesstrauße 433 toward Langenhorner Chaussee) to access the area of cafes, grocers, etc?

Another road would be northeast on Flughafenstrauße.

It looks like a short walk (less than a km), but maybe it would be better to take S1 from the airport to Ohlsdorf then get on U1 to Langenhorn Market?

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

It appears there is a pedestrian walkway over Zeppelenstraße/Bundesstrauße. I've also discovered bus 292 from S Hamburg Airport (I don't know how far that is from the Radisson Blu) which is faster compared to the S1/U1 connection. I'd still prefer to walk to ALDI on Erdkampsweg if the area is safe (from vehicles) for walking.

Yes, you can walk; many passengers walk between airport terminal and Station 'U Fuhlsbuttel Nord', even with baggage. Take the northernmost exit from the arrivals level, head north under the ramp for departures, then north east on the pedestrain and walk over the bridge of B433. During G-20 summit, there may be some restrictions, btw.

Thank you especially for the details. We won't be arriving until May 27, 2018. To avoid hauling our luggage, I've booked Radisson blue at the airport-also it may be close to midnight before we arrive. We avoid high cost hotel food as well as taxis so being by train/bus stops plus walking distance to a grocer or bakery/cafe is great!

We will be needing to transfer from The Crowne Plaza, Alster Hotel to Steinwerder Cruise Terminal on the 3rd September, which is a Sunday. We will not have much luggage (just one big case which is easily wheeled), so could walk between Stations etc.

We have explored the possibility of getting a bus, then Ferry 73 to Argentinienbrucke, then walking to the terminal, then we found out the ferry does not run on a Sunday. Hence, I think we will need a taxi from the Hotel as the other public transport routes look more complicated and we feel it is probably not worth the hassle.

Is our assessment correct, and if so what is the best and cheapest way to arrange a taxi?

Would we be better just asking the hotel to call a taxi when we want to go, or would we be better pre booking. We have looked at the "better taxis" website mentioned earlier on this thread and they only price for a premium transfer, rather than a taxi, if booked ahead and that costs 49 euros which sounds high - or is that the going rate?

When I did the taxi fare finder thing, it came up as an approx. 9 1/2 km trip and the estimate it gave was for

26.09 Euros.

Yes, that sounds much better, thanks. I assume we will have to get a taxi on the day for that rather than book ahead, but we will be in the hotel for three nights so can explore the possibilities then.

I had the taxi fare finder, but had not used it for that - idiot that I am clear.png?emoji-embarrass-1727

A warning due to the current situation in Hamburg; please be prepared for longer waiting at the baggage claims due to staff shortage; newspapers repeatedly reported of waiting times way over 1 hour ...

Thank you for this, but can I ask why there is a "current situation" in Hamburg? There is nothing on our news and searching the net does not bring anything up. Is it something that is temporary or of a longer term basis? I hope there are no big problems over there.

The staff shortage at Hamburg airport is due to illnesses and the peak season with much higher demand for staff, the situation may 'relax' in september. The issue is obviously reported in our most important local newspapers only ...

Sorry to intrude on your thread ladies & gentleman.

A message for Tring, I sent a message on a cruise you was on last year to Madeira re the local bus up to the Gardens. I am not sure if you will see that now as it was last year. I have never had to contact anyone direct before & hoped that if I sent you a friend request it would allow me type a little message but it didnt.

This is the line to the thread if you have two mins spare to look at it. Thank you.

JMHamburg et. al.,

Thanks for this thread. I've found it to be very helpful.

We are in Hamburg on a Saturday from 8am to 8pm. My initial plans are as follows: Ship docks at Altona Cruise Center. Take the water bus connection #62 (from Dockland stop) to Landungsbrucken Wharf. From Landungsbrucken Wharf, walk to Sandungsbrucken station and take subway U3 (yellow line, in the direction of Rathaus/Barmbek) to Baumwall Station. Walk along harbor to Miniature Wunderland where we have prepurchased morning tickets. Around 11:30am, leave Miniature Wunderland and head back to Landungsbrucken Wharf and take the noon English-language Rainer Abicht harbour tour. After the harbour tour, I'm not sure what else we should see/do in the afternoon. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Alfred
