  1. But, to the typical geographically-challenged out-of-towner, “Queens” often means “outer borough”, while “Long Island” suggests Locust Valley, the Hamptons and places of that ilk. And a true New Yorker is not simply a resident of any of the five Boroughs which make up New York City, but a resident of New York County. This frame of reference is supported by the tendency of residents of Kings, Queens, Richmond or the Bronx to refer to going into Manhattan as “going to ‘The City’ “.

I do not know what/where “FIDI” is — but if someone wants to spend time someplace interesting in midtown Manhattan getting to and from LIC is likely to eat a fair amount of time- when you consider getting to the subway station, waiting for a train, riding on the train, getting from the subway station to that less expensive hotel WILL eat up a fair amount of time each way - plus about $10 fare for a couple - or almost as much time, and a lot more money, going by taxi or car service.
  3. Someone who wants to see/experience New York City might not want to schedule a couple of hours a day on public transportation or costly car service to save a few $ on a hotel room.

  5. Agreed - but it does serve to keep Nassau out of the bottom spot, so that is something.
  6. End of September to early November is probably best - dry and warm weather, with the mobs of tourists and oppressive heat of summer gone.

Having sailed from New York to the Caribbean several times in January on HAL (before they got Carnivalized) I really enjoyed the passage down the Hudson - followed by hitting the 70 degree Gulf Stream by early afternoon of the first full day . True, the last day was cold, but was a small price for avoiding the cost/need of two winter flights and a pre-cruise hotel stay. Of course, living about an hour outside of NYC played a part. A winter Bahamas cruise from NY does not attract - and I doubt there are any to Bermuda.

I agree, but my post (starting: “ if you choose the subway…”) in response to a marginally insane earlier one which suggested subway to central Brooklyn followed by local bus back to cruise terminal. If I were coming from mid-town, I would take a taxi or Uber to the landing, then ferry across the East River. I swore off the subway the day I took early retirement.
  9. If you choose the subway, it might make sense to take it to South Ferry and then the ferry across to Brooklyn - which would be easier and a lot mor pleasant than a bus in Brooklyn.
  10. Since you have three days between cruising (and seem to like to see a bit of NYC) it makes sense to debark leisurely, spend the night in NY, and fly the next day - picking whatever flight time attracts you, that three hour time change helps.

If I ever take another Caribbean cruise it will probably be because I just wanted to get away and found a good price - an an itinerary that matched some land travel that put me near the cruise port. I like staying on St. Maarten and St. Barth’s. , but seeing them on a cruise is just too much of a mob scene - so, yes, any future Caribbean cruise is likely to be stay-aboard for me.
  12. I think there is a greater likelihood of some unwashed yutz of a passenger contaminating buffet food or utensils than the line serving contaminated or improperly prepared food..
  13. Only if you booked a cruise using your current last name; or if you are going on a closed loop cruise and do not have other ID and birth certificate. The chances are pretty good that (as a CC poster) you do not really need to show your passport. This is highly likely if you are sailing Carnival Sunshine.
  14. Living just over an hour away from MCT, I am inclined to prefer sailing from it - sadly, there are very few options other than NCL. I do have to wonder why people would consider flying to New York from a distant home rather than to a Florida port if they are not planning to spend at least a day or more enjoying the city.
  15. When you consider the size of a cruise ship, a bit of flexing as it passes through/over even small waves has to occur.
  16. $2 bills have always been oddballs. In the 1960’s the Navy used to specifically include them in the cash distributed on paydays - the intent being to make the area around a base aware of the contribution Navy pay made to the local economy. Not sure how effective that effort was.
  17. Not only is sailing down the Hudson from MCT an awesome experience, if you happen to sail in the winter to the Caribbean, the transition from wintry New York to the warm Gulf Stream waters by early afternoon of your first sea day is something special.
  18. The question that occurs to me involves why one cruises. If it is just to be on a ship, it would seem to make sense to get on a ship leaving from near home - to avoid the cost/hassle of a flight. If it is to experience the area being cruised, it would seem to make sense to leave a bit of time to see that area, and not just focus on being on the ship. (Is this, Mr. Idubs, one of the worms you anticipated?)

  22. Of course it can be argued that things in that area have been going downhill ever since Remus lost out.
  23. OP’s FIL has a recognized sensitivity which rules out deep sea fishing. There is very little similarity between that activity and going on a cruise. Any short Gulf of Mexico cruise outside of hurricane season would be the logical first step to explore the possibility.
