  1. We have been gone from HAL for awhile but just booked a TA for next year. I was looking at the website and the entertainment pages where I saw a category called "Strings." I know Lincoln Center is gone (a huge bummer) but have they replaced it with some generic classical thing they are calling "Strings"?
  2. I have loyalty benefits on three lines, and all of them have been cutting back on perks. As a marketing tool to attract new customers, these programs become useless when only the old-timers book a cruise. I am of the opinion that by cutting perks, the lines are actively trying to run off their older clientele.
  3. I hadn't thought of it that way, but it makes logical sense.
  4. Exactly. I may be in the minority about this, but the size of the bathroom is the last thing I worry about when choosing a cruise (or a ship.) I live in a 100 year old house with small bathrooms, and neither my husband nor I are especially large people, so I can make do with a small cruise bathroom where I won't be spending all my time anyway. Tastes vary.
  5. Didn't we just have this conversation about Mexican food? 😄
  6. I missed that before. Thanks! What a great link!
  7. I will often order the vegetarian option in the dining room because it tends to be more "exotic" than the everyday same old same old. I'm a regular carnivore, but cruising is a time to experiment with food. Looking forward to the options on O. Anyone have pictures?
  8. We always ask to share for these same reasons. It's also why we mourn the demise of fixed dining. Once we shared a table with a professional Santa Claus, and we learned all about the industry (yes, a whole industry.) We enjoy meeting new people and never lack for topics of conversation. We will be late in the queue for speciality dining, so I'm happy for the advice, Hank.
  9. Gary Bembridge doesn't do hype like some of the other YouTubers. I've been following him for years, and many of his calls have proven true in my own personal experience.
  10. Definitely looking forward to your newbie experiences since we'll be in the same boat (so to speak 🙂) in the fall.
  11. Thanks for asking this. As a newbie on O, I was wondering.
  12. Big names don't always draw like they are supposed to. (Curtis Stone?) Pepin had a long-running cooking show on American public television and was a student/colleague of Julia Child. His speciality was French cuisine (not surprisingly.)
  13. "Preferred" is subjective, I think. I've been on the R class ships before, and I really like the small ship atmosphere.
  14. I think it's near where you were but on the other side.
  15. Thanks for that. I wondered about the gangways. We booked very late, and about all that was left were ocean views on deck 4. We decided to take the chance.
  16. This is the sort of thing that gets filmed on Carnival ships and posted on YouTube. Nice to see O is "equal opportunity." 🙂 (Disclaimer: I have been on Carnival ships where this never happened.) I like the staff-served buffet. They do that on HAL. I don't know exactly how effective it is at controlling disease, but I like the idea that no one is manhandling my food before I get to it.
  17. Did you experience any noise issues from the reception area?
  18. Very nice. Beats an app, in my book.
  19. The best snapper I ever had was in PV. Seafood in Mexico is always delicious.
  20. If the music is performed in a lounge-like theater, socializing would be rude. If the performers are there for "background," then that's a different story. Problem sometimes is that one person might view classical music in general as "background" sound where another views it as a musical performance in its own right. (I'm pretty much in the latter camp.)
  21. Of course, Spanish food and Mexican food are different. My daughter spent a semester studying in Spain and came back a bit of an "expert" on the differences. She's a good cook and learned many Spanish recipes, but she was limited in the authentic ingredients she could get here. I wonder if a traditionally Spanish restaurant would fly on O.
  22. Related note: are there likely to be new excursions added before or after sailing? Likewise, cancellations?
  23. This noise thing seems to be restricted to the Vista, right?
