  1. Carnival should have told them before they boarded. However the behaviour of some of the people that book these cruises is awful.
  2. My son did the Haruru Falls kayaking excursion with Princess in January this year. As it was a tender port, it got him priority off the boat and straight to the tour. It was not that expensive and he had a fantastic experience. As my daughter and I didn’t have a ship excursion we had to wait quite a while to get a tender off the boat.
  3. I am weighing up whether it would be easier to stay at Mercure Central station and catch a train for an early morning Sunday domestic flight - need to be there by 7am or stay at the airport. From what I’ve read having to pay for the shuttle from a hotel nearby and rely on the vagaries of the hotel staff may be less reliable.
  4. Can you walk from any of the hotels to the domestic terminal?
  5. Is Royal normally organised with its cruises? Reason I ask is that we booked on a cruise from Sydney to Singapore that had changed from a transpacific. All the tours showing relate to the previous cruise e.g. day 4 at Cairns, you can book a tchou tchou train in Noumea etc. It has been this way for three months now. They also continually send pre-cruise offers which give you the same options - at least weekly, sometimes lucky enough to get them every day. This hasn’t happened with any other other cruise lines I have sailed.
  6. Auckland Zoo is lovely, public transport there is easy to use. Not hiking but quite hilly so you do feel like you are exercising.
  7. There are lots of ferries to Rottnest Island from Freo. They are very close where they dock, it might be worth looking into it more. The quokkas are amazing. If you are sitting eating lunch under the trees, they will walk all over you.
  8. There is a Thrifty car rental place a short walk from the tender wharf in Penneshaw. We rented a car there last year. Excellent value. Be careful with your timing though, it is a very big island and we had to rush to get back in time.
  9. It depends on which location you’re planning to pick up the car from. If it is the South Melbourne location, I would suggest one or two of you catch the tram from the pier to the Montague St stop (3 stops). Walk to Thistlewaite St, 2 short blocks, then drive back to the pier to pick up the others. This will be about a 10 minute drive.
  10. Booked a guaranteed BC, received a BB. That’s as good an upgrade as I’ve had.
  11. I used the same email address for my visa as I did for my children, one of whom is technically an adult (18) and had no problems.
  12. I don’t drink alcohol but find the plus package of value, once I add up all the coffees, soft drinks and mocktails with the wifi. It is still not clear if it applies to us or not. In the Captains Circle info it does specify the countries included, Australia being one. It does not state whether this promotion applies to all of those countries.
  13. I have two teenagers, don’t drink and none of us were that keen on our one Carnival cruise. Their favourite is Princess, but they also like P&O. Carnival is too loud, has constant on board announcements, has lots of emphasis on drinking and the food is very American. The constant kowtowing for tips/10s was very grating. Also signing for drinks etc is a minor annoyance on both Carnival and P&O when you are used to the medallion on Princess. We have one more booked on P&O, then another booked on Royal (only because it was an exceptional deal). Booking another Princess for Alaska soonish. None of us plan to go on Carnival again unless it is an amazing deal.
  14. The food is different. Much more Australian and less artificial. I was so pleasantly surprised by the P&O food, it tasted more real.
  15. Very disappointed. We went on our first P&O from Freo to Indonesia and back earlier this year. I really enjoyed the Australianess of the cruise, no endless spruiking for tips and no over the top, fake friendliness of the crew. Compared to Carnival Splendor last year trip to Noumea where it was just so American in volume, food and tip culture. Princess is in between the two in attitude if you have the drink package, much more low key. On the weekend I booked a P&O for September, glad nothing is changing before then. Have also booked RCI for next April, haven’t been on them, hoping they are not too American.
  16. @Bubbeh OPs cruise ends in Auckland so it may be cheaper to get a return airfare from the US to Auckland if there is a special deal. Two one way airfares can often be more expensive, even with the extra flight MEL-AUK it might be cheaper.
  17. We are booked on Sydney to Singapore arriving 16 April. Can’t book shore excursions as the one showing are for the previous trip for these dates - in Noumea and the Pacific. I had read on here they were having problems with their website so I just check every week. The cruise is showing on sale on the website though. Not sure if I should worry or not yet.
  18. Melbourne would be one of the ports where I would consider the debarkation tour, depending on the cost. It is very day dependent and if it is a morning peak hour where there is an accident on one of the freeways it could take a long time. Alternatively on a weekend it could take half an hour to the airport in very little traffic.
  19. For everything we buy in Australia they have to show the total price including taxes. It is why gratuities are included for Carnival in our prices. We definitely get refunds for ports missed, as they cannot charge for a service not received - if we don’t get to a port they can’t keep that component of the overall total. What is shown on the website when we go to book is a base rate for the lowest price cabin, you then get shown upgrade options and then a final total before booking. It makes it much easier to budget and compare.
  20. The furphy about port increases in Melbourne is an excuse. Yes it increased but was shown to still be less than most other ports in Australia. I have done five cruises in 18 months leaving from Melbourne twice, Brisbane once, Sydney once and Freo once. Melbourne terminal might not be as fancy but it was just as efficient and crew love it as they can get on and off easily. There is a huge cruise market in Melbourne and Carnival/Princess have stuffed up royally and misunderstood the market in Australia and NZ.
  21. Not sure where the obstructed minis are. Have stayed on aloha twice in minis and they are uncovered balconies but not obstructed. I would avoid the very back as the noise when anchoring/ arriving was terrible. I also avoided the dolphin mini suites as they are above one of the performance spaces and at the very back.
