  1. Not just helpful, perfect! I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to get this info for us. I hope you continue to have a great time on the rest of your trip!! And thanks again for sharing it with us!
  2. Huge thanks for all that info and the video! We aren’t going into Sandnes itself, just meeting our taxi near the ship to go to Stavanger. It was hard to see past the fencing across from the ship — can you tell if we walk along the fence whether we can get out to the street or that small port building? (In other words, a cross walk or exit from the fencing?) Really appreciate your help, thanks!
  3. I hope you enjoy your visit! For the benefit of those of us who will be there next month, could you tell us please whether you were docked at the Somaneset pier in Sandnes (it's about 2K north of Sandnes itself) and, if so, whether you could just walk off the ship and out to the street to meet a taxi? (Just trying to figure out the best arrangements for a taxi several of us have booked. I'm sure we won't have to go all the way to Sandnes itself.) Did HAL run a shuttle from the ship to the Sandnes train station, or into Stavanger itself? (Earlier reports indicated the former.) Have a great time! Edited to add: I see from the official port berthing plan that you are indeed at Somaneset pier today. (So, could you just walk off the ship to the street? Did you have to go through a terminal or building to do so?) https://www.stavangerhavn.no/en/about/documents/mooringplans/
  4. And in addition to paying respects to the courageous, also getting an incredible and emotional up-close look at those historic sites, and an understanding of what took place that is so much more powerful in person than one gets from reading books or watching movies. (Although those first 20 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan" are pretty amazing.)
  5. So happy that you found and enjoyed Jafs! I am sure you will continue to have wonderful fresh fish throughout your cruise! And what a small world thing for you to mention Whitby, which we visited last fall on a fabulous UK tour. Had a great fish & chips lunch there; my notes say it was cod. I don't think it was my first time having mushy peas, but it was my first time really loving them. (They didn't make it into the photo below, but they were there. 🙂 ) Small bonus photo because we were blown away by the Abbey. Thanks again for sharing your cruise; keep having a great time!
  6. Thank you. I was posting that just as you posted. But it seems like a pretty good thing for folks on those flights. 🙂
  7. Thank you both for all the helpful advice. Thanks to advice in other threads in this forum, I already have the Schiphol app on my phone. 🙂 I had no idea you could reserve a security time slot, though. However, when I followed the timeslots link above, the web site says: "Before you book a security time slot, it is good to know the following: Only valid for European flights (Schengen)." So I assume this would not work for a flight to the US then. 🙂 But it seems very handy for others whose flights qualify!
  8. In Halifax, there's a Beaver Tails stand that is about halfway down the boardwalk as you walk from the cruise docks toward the Maritime Museum. It was in an an area with many other food options. (Their website says the address is 1549 Lower Water Street.) You can't miss it. 🙂
  9. I'd appreciate some help with the questions below that have just arisen because our airline just cancelled our return flight from Amsterdam to the U.S. this July, and rebooked us for the day we disembark from our ship. Here's what's going on: My wife and I will be arriving back in Amsterdam on a Saturday in late July after a Norway and fjords cruise aboard the HAL Rotterdam. Scheduled time to dock is 7am (prior day is a sea day, and the day before that we are scheduled to be in Nordfjordeid from 7am-2pm). We'll be flying back nonstop to the U.S. Those flights typically leave Schiphol around noon-1pm. When we booked our flights many months ago, we considered last summer's problems at Schiphol and decided to avoid any hassles this July by staying over in Amsterdam and flying out the next day, Sunday. Unfortunately, our airline just cancelled our return flight (the Sunday 1pm flight), and re-booked us on the same flight on Saturday (1pm), the day we disembark. There really aren't great alternatives to this, so we are considering it. Here are my questions. 1. We will walk off the ship with our own luggage, as early as we can. Since our last port will have been in Norway, another Schengen country, will we have to go through any immigration or customs controls in the ocean cruise terminal? Is there anything else that might delay us in the cruise terminal itself? 2. For the quickest (non-rail) transfer to Schiphol, should we book a private car service, take pot lock that there will be plenty of taxis, or wait for Uber? (Please keep in mind this will be a Saturday morning.) 3. Can folks recommend a private car service, in case we do that? 4. Any other tips, strategies, or advice for getting to Schiphol as quickly as we can after we disembark? (Assuming working WiFi on board the ship, we'll check in for our flight the day before.) Thanks for any and all help here. Very disappointing development re our flight, but it's air travel in the summer; we are doing our best to roll with the punches and be prepared.
  10. I have stayed there and I replied hours ago in your original thread.
  11. All good information above. In addition, there's a very recent thread over in the Celebrity forum in which the poster, who will also be sailing on the Beyond, asked about this shore excursion. I think you will find the replies helpful.
  12. I have Apple devices. As noted above, it is not possible to clear the data and cache in an individual app on Apple devices. Deleting and reinstalling the app has worked for me on my iPhone and iPad. There’s a great deal of confusion in this thread because of the differences between how apps are handled on Android and Apple devices.
  13. Glad things are now working for you! I want to flag for anyone reading your comments that they apply only to Android devices. On an Apple device, you cannot clear the cache for an individual app, you just delete the app and reinstall it.
  14. Okay, since the OP will be staying at the Scandic Palace, I'll add some comments. We spent several nights there in August 2018. It is indeed in a great location, we walked everywhere. We arrived well before check-in after an overnight flight from the U.S. We dropped our bags, and headed off for a free walking tour of Copenhagen that started at City Hall, just across from the hotel. (We'd booked this in advance.) This gave us a good introduction to the city, but we were pretty zonked before the end and baled a bit early. (The guide was wonderful. They work for tips, be generous!) https://www.copenhagenfreewalkingtours.dk/index.html @Kamfish642A couple of negatives about the hotel, depending on your room, so you might want to make some requests. The location across from City Hall is great, but the downside is that many of the rooms will hear the bell in the bell tower, which chimes every 15 minutes and then rings out the hour, from (iirc) 8am until midnight. (Or at least did so in 2018.) Although we'd asked for a quiet room and our room was not along the street, we could still hear the bell as our room windows did face the direction of City Hall, and it was pretty disturbing at night. The second downside was that our room had a tub/shower combo with a tub wall that was dangerously too high for me. If you are short or have knee/mobility issues, you might want to ask about rooms with a shower only. I hope you have a great trip!
  15. Thank you for your review and for sharing your beautiful photos.
  16. If the app is installed on your mobile device, just delete it and reinstall it, and then sign in.
  17. I think the only way you can do this on Apple devices is simply to delete the app and then reinstall it. (There’s no option I’ve found for clearing an app cache in iOS, and Google tells me there is none. Just delete and reinstall.)
  18. Are you talking about the Scandic Palace? (It’s not clear from your thread title and comment above.) If so, we’ve stayed there, and I’ll offer comments it that’s where you are booked. 😊
  19. I hope the comments above have clarified for you that it is not a "one or the other" situation of missing the locks. All of this will happen on March 15. The Beyond will enter the Canal and go through the new Agua Clara locks. You will be on board. The ship will then anchor in Gatun Lake, and those who have chosen to take the excursion you are considering will get off for that. So if you did get off in order to take that excursion, you should go through the original locks on the Pacific side and you will have a very different experience than the new locks you had gone through in the morning. What you would miss would be the Beyond turning around and going back through the Agua Clara locks (which you'd just come through in the morning.) The ship will dock in Colon to await the guests who headed off on shore excursions from Gatun Lake. I hope you enjoy whichever option you choose.
  20. You are definitely given a credit. (At least that was still true in 2021.) I can’t recall the amount, it may have been $35. It’s never been a problem having enough food. Also, Sushi on 5 is so underutilized they will sometimes do an “all you can eat” deal.
  21. The Jewel-class ships, including the Gem, do not have reserved shows. You can book specialty dining, and it’s a good idea to do so, especially if you are looking for specific dates and times. With NCL handing out the “free at sea” meals, and with the inflated levels of Platinum and above Latitudes members, the specialty venues can be pretty crowded.
  22. Since the Citadel is an active military installation, and since there are no ticket prices shown without tours, my educated guess is that you can't wander around in there on your own. In any event, we took the tour and thought it was very worthwhile.
  23. My wife and I took a wonderful NE/Canada cruise in September 2019, which, pre-trip, I'd dubbed "the lobster roll cruise," planning to have lobster rolls for lunch in as many ports as we could, and declaring a winner at the end. And that winner was the West Street Cafe in Bar Harbor. Absolutely delicious lobster roll. And the warm Maine blueberry pie for dessert was the best piece of pie I'd ever had. In Portland, we had lobster rolls at the highly-recommended Becky's Dinner, but, that day at least, the lobster had no flavor. Experts later told me that could have been a bad-luck function of the life cycle stage at which the lobster was harvested. In any event, please do not miss the Holy Donut in Portland. Unbelievable donuts. If you want to read up on what we did and ate in our ports that overlapped with yours (Boston, Portland, Bar Harbor, and Halifax), my detailed review, with photos, is at the link below. Have a great cruise!
  24. I had a similar experience in my mid-20s. Except that I think the guy was clutching a bit more than my legs. 😂
