On the westbound 150th Anniversary cruise on Rotterdam (westbound was the one in October, not April) we were seated in the Pinnacle for lunch and they arrived soon after. When Joska's leash was detached she ran over to our table so I got to pet her. BTW, that really surprised me that she did that because she was actually "working" at that time. But then Corne came over and retrieved her.

Warning! Curmudgeon mode follows. With reference to this thread in particular, I **CELEBRATE** Information Overload Awareness Day! It's why I very rarely participate any longer, just scan for info on folks that I know personally -- and therefore am indeed passionately interested in their trials, tribulations, and victories. OK, back to being my usual pleasant self ๐.- 88 replies

Eurodam - One Night Cruise / The good and not so good
AV8rix replied to crusinthrough's topic in Holland America Line
Well, I live in the Seattle metro area and have used the one-nighter quite a few times just as a segment to get to Vancouver to continue on to someplace else. Here's my take: The one-nighter is a booze cruise for Seattle HAL corporate folk. So I have learned to just stay in my stateroom for that segment and order room service. One time on Eurodam I figured that the Tamarind might be safe (the MDR is intolerable on that night). Nope. They had pushed a bunch of tables together to seat about 12!!! They were all noisy and drunk. On the way out, passing the podium, I said to the manager, "They're corporate, aren't they?". He just rolled his eyes and nodded "yes". -
The New Ai voice for Incoming Phone Calls
AV8rix replied to mcrcruiser's topic in Holland America Line
But if you have a PCC (I've been lucky and have had the same AWESOME one for 13 years) you can just call the PCC line directly. They have not changed their answering message, just telling you to key in the extension number of your PCC. So for those of us fortunate enough to have a PCC there is absolutely no reason to EVER call the main HAL line. -
<sigh> Yeah it's me again, posting what I do on ALL of these threads complaining about the dismal deterioration of the HAL web site. Here goes: In late 2016 Carnival (corporate) got rid of their direct-employee IT folks and outsourced to Capgemini. Capgemini is a nominally French IT contractor who has occasionally admitted that it, in turn, outsources to India. Just search keywords "Carnival" and "Capgemini".

Coffee with Cruise Director & Asst. General Hotel Manager - Noordam
AV8rix replied to Roz's topic in Holland America Line
Well, shucks. Guess you didnโt, ummm, expand my signature. Iโve sailed on 11 HAL ships, about 25 voyages, with 42 B2B2B2B days on Koningsdam coming up next month. So it should be apparent that I also like โbeing on a dam shipโ. I have never yet in 13 years on CC made a complaint about room service or bland food โ and I didnโt even after disembarking Zuiderdam last year. Not my style. Itโs just that the post about those two specific complaints with regard to Noordam sort of struck a chord and reminded me that I had experienced exactly the same disappointments on Zuiderdam and so I replied to that post. But then Iโve never been on a GWV or any other Grand. I guess we Dallas County plebes donโt inhabit the same financial universe as you Collin County folk. -
Coffee with Cruise Director & Asst. General Hotel Manager - Noordam
AV8rix replied to Roz's topic in Holland America Line
Y'know, I had my first cruise on a Vista-class ship (Zuiderdam) last year. Expand my signature ๐. My observations agree with yours, particularly about the food being bland and unusually disappointing room service. I think that's weird, both of us being unhappy with our first experience on individual Vista-class ships. -
With VERY few exceptions that has been my experience too. I'd chew ground glass before I'd EVER play 6/5 on land or at sea, so the hosts have generally been very gracious in opening the high-limit BJ table for me -- even in the mornings on sea days. So I agree with you, with sufficient staffing they'd probably open the craps table if asked politely.

Well, I dunno about โpretentiousโ. โโฆ.alle vongoleโ is just Italian for โโฆ.with clamsโ. Although I donโt think that โalleโ LITERALLY means โwithโ but is generally used that way in menus. Oh, I get it. You think that everything on the menu should be in English. Well, next time youโre in Canaletto just order โlong slender strings of pasta with shrimp and clamsโ. You can do likewise when ordering anything else on the menu that is printed using the Italian-language words.

Yeah, and then the drunk Sooners barfing and peeing on our sidewalks. Always nasty in downtown Dallas the day after Texas-OU weekend. Is Steve's gait showing any improvement yet? I know you'll keep us posted but you know why I'm particularly eager for updates. -
Has Holland America offshored its personal cruise consultants?
AV8rix replied to Pylon's topic in Holland America Line
My beloved PCC of 13 years(!!) still works from his home in Seattle. Don't know what I'd do without him. He always knows the way I like things and my preferences so our calls are short. I need to tell him very little but which cruise I wish to book, and then my credit card number. Umm, when I said "our calls are short", I meant the business part. He always has time to chat. And if I need further assistance later on, he always returns my call or email the same day! -
Hi @leo72976! Welcome to the HAL board! I originally learned to fly in Roanoke, back when Northwest Regional Airport was Friendly Aero Valley. The late great Edna Gardner-Whyte, who built the airport, was my instructor. But that was back in the dark ages, before the invention of gunpowder or the printing press๐. Never been on X, but I know that some folks here have been so can offer you comparisons. Getting to Canada Place from YVR is simple. Just take the SkyTrain mass transit. There is a SkyTrain station right at the terminal. Again, welcome!

Any reason to bring Covid Vaccine Record onboard?
AV8rix replied to FlaMariner's topic in Holland America Line
I do the same. And to answer the question of @SargassoPirate, because I'm a blackjack player and don't like to touch the chips with my bare hands. I suppose slots players should do the same. -
Any reason to bring Covid Vaccine Record onboard?
AV8rix replied to FlaMariner's topic in Holland America Line
Regarding noro -- I never touch any common-use surface on the ships. Even when it's rocking I don't use the handrails on stairs. Before going to dinner in the MDR I check the menu on the TV or posted outside the MDR and decide in advance what I will order so I NEVER touch a menu. Rarely use elevators but hit the button with elbow or knuckle when I do. I use raw sugar for my tea, but since covid they no longer provide individual packets so I always bring my own so I don't have to touch the glass dispensers. And I bring alcohol hand wipes. That Purell that is provided will not protect against viruses. And no, I'm not OCD but my first career was clinical microbiology. So I have great knowledge of and respect for viruses. And yes, I have been on sick ships but so far have never contracted noro -- or covid. Knock wood. -

Whee! I actually have a Denali picture (since we're talking about Alaska cruise tours). I rarely take cruise photos since I'm a bad photographer. This is the dearly-departed love of my life at Denali. He's the one who suffered from the same condition that is currently plaguing Lenda's @Quartzsite Cruiser DH Steve. We didn't get there on a ship. We flew his plane (mine didn't have the range) up there -- took turns flying 'cause it's a looong trip from Washington to Alaska when you only have one engine.- 111 replies

Lenda, best of luck to you and Steve. In the coming months I'm hopeful to hear news of the regression/reversal of symptoms that the shunt should accomplish. Wish my dearly-departed love had opted for the shunt but, oh well. Can't change history.- 88 replies

Yeah, I don't know why they're renaming stuff. One of my favorites was Spaghetti Alla Vongole (on the old menu). Now it's the same dish but on the new menu it is called "Spaghetti with Shrimp and Clams". Anyone doubts this, just check out the ingredients on BOTH menus.
-
Well, I wasn't gonna say anything but that is true. I'm a (displaced) Texan and it's against the law. You can be prosecuted for that if anyone finds out. But I happen to like red beans in my chili and so I'm happy to be living in the Seattle metroplex -- where I can invite friends to join me when I make it. Back home I had to eat it alone. ๐ And apologies for thread drift.

Thanks for posting that, @TCUJeep. You see, on the revised daily menu that they implemented this month they deleted the carpaccio and lamb chops that had ALWAYS been available previously. So now we have to pay a premium to enjoy them on just that evening? I'll be on a Pinnacle-class ship for the holidays. Think I'll skip Canaletto on Christmas eve.
-
Right. That's me. See post #38 on this thread. Again, search keywords "Carnival" and "Capgemini".

Well, it's just a bit different on the Pinnacle-class ships and the Signature Sisters. On Pinnacle-class ships Nami is actually a separate (although within Tamarind) sushi bar in the sense that, like on sushi bars on land, you can sit at the bar itself, talk to the sushi chefs and watch them do their thing. On the Signature Sisters there is not a separate sushi bar but there are sushi chefs and the Nami menu is identical to the one for the Pinnacle-class ships. But you sit in the main Tamarind space. Hope this helps.

Casino Offers - Any Pattern to Frequency?
AV8rix replied to League3056's topic in Holland America Line
I got a bizarre offer on the first of this month: "Book your Cruise for 2024 and save with Casino Insider Rates" (red bold underlined text mine). I don't have anything planned yet for next year so was eager to explore this offer. WRONG! The overwhelming majority of the cruises offered are for fall/winter this year. There were barely a handful of cruises for 2024 included in this offer.
