  1. If you are there on weekdays public transit has resumed. Weekends and holidays they don’t run. I learned that the hard way on the 4th of July but was able to get a taxi for $25 each way.
  2. We did Harv and Marv’s this past Sunday. They do a great job of getting to the whales. But it’s going to be hit or miss depending on the month and weather.
  3. Whale watching is going to depend on a lot of things. Particularly time of year the most. Juneau can be just as good as icy strait or better on a great day. Last Sunday we saw a large group 15 humpbacks bubble net feeding in Juneau. They all came out with their mouth fully open multiple times.
  4. I’ll let everyone know how public transit is tomorrow.
  5. Public bus, or taxi/Uber drop off a mile away are the only other options besides renting a car. Im there tomorrow and will do the public bus. It runs from the Downtown transit station ten minutes after every hour. The return bus runs 25 minutes after every hour. Two different bus routes.
  6. There have been a lot of delayed and canceled flights since Wednesday. delays can lead to alot of cascading delays then cascading cancellations. United has suffered the worst. It is supposed to be a record air travel holiday travel period and it’s clear the airlines and FAA cannot handle it. United is also one of the airlines that hasn’t updated all their altimeters for the 5G transition so they have 180 or so planes that cannot fly any bad weather as of July 1. I’m currently on Radiance and it seems like there are probably quite a few who missed the ship. There were also a lot of people who were talking about barley making it. if you are flying day off you have to be very strategic. And that’s essentially, only fly non stop and try to get first flight out as the plane should already be there from the night before. That’s not possible for everyone and holiday travel is even more iffy.
  7. Depending on when they start sailing next July, I might do 3 days on Utopia, 7 days at a Disney/Universal and then 4 days on Utopia.
  8. Yes. It’s quite common. I’m on Radiance of the Seas June 30-July 14. Vancouver to Vancouver.
  9. I do a mix of paid excursions and diy hiking excursions. On our back to back in two weeks we are doing a whale watching tour each week(harv and marv and glacier wind). We are also doing two full on hiking days one at Mendenall and one at Exit Glaicer(hoping to complete the Harding Icefield trail. We are also dyi in Sitka. It’s best to do a mix or what you can afford. I’d say do atleast one paid excursion and that being a whale watching tour. IMHO if was white pass train or whale watching, I’d do whale watching. But honestly I’d recommend both(Harv and Marv in Juneau for whale watching and Chillkoot Charters for White Pass Rail in Skagway). All told we are paying $2k for all our excursions over the 14 days, that’s 6 paid excursions and 3 diy. Only 1 of our six paid excursions is through the cruise line because it’s only offered through cruise lines.
  10. While there are 3hr helo excursion for glacier hiking in Seward there are also 8hr ice hiking and climbing excursions at Exit Glacier in Seward. They are difficult and you need to be in fairly decent shape. They essentially start on the Harding ice field trail and then take a turn on a different trail around Marmott Valley that takes you to exit glacier at which point you out on crampons and have to climb up ice before trekking on exit glacier. Seems the OP is on a round trip cruise so their only options are helo based. If they can afford it they should do it if it’s their only trip. The helo ride is the safest part of these trips. A lot of people start out it being their only trip but then decide to go back again and again.
  11. We are planning on trying to get to the end of the Harding icefield trail on our B2B turnaround day in July. Hopefully everything is passable/not to snow covered in early July.
  12. In Alaska and the Baltics you never know what you are going to get at any point in the season I pack both cold and warm gear to be safe.
  13. On most sailing I’ve looked at it seems like JS have already doubled in price. Looks like my thanksgivings cruise will be last time we will be in a JS.
  14. It varies by tour. I’m doing the White Pass and Yukon suspension bridge with Chilkoot. It’s the first season they are offering it. It’s rail one way and bus back. Most of the all day white pass rail tours are bus on way and train one way.
  15. Royal has a ship sponsored tour on Major Marine for B2B cruisers that departs at 8:30am and is 9hrs in duration ship to ship which means it’s likely the 8hr fjords cruise. So it’s more than possible to do either the 6.5hr or 8hrs depending on what time the the tour operators start.
  16. You can safely do the 6.5 fjord cruises, the 8hr might be possible depending on when the head out. I’m on Royal for a B2B the first two weeks of July. We are either hiking at exit glacier or the fjords. We have done the fjords the previous two trips when we just did one way north bounds so was thinking about doing something new.
  17. Looks like my second leg of my B2B with second Skagway day on July 10 was moved from RRF to BRD. So ORE the week before and BRD the week after.
  18. You can get take out but plan on eating it before your board.
  19. Crab in restaurants is expensive where ever you go when compared to making it yourself at home. $75 at Tracy’s is in the market price range or $60-$80 that most restaurants sell king crab for. Also keep in mind when looking at prices, King crab is about .6-.7 pounds of meat per pound. Dungeness is about .25 pounds per pound, so while you initially think snow or dungeness is a lot cheaper, on a picked meat basis it’s only marginally cheaper than king crab. King crab is my least favorite though. I’m doing a Cajun crab boil this weekend. 5lbs of snow and 5lbs of dungeness. Cost for crab at home $100. Cost of this at a restaurant about $400+tax&tip(so closer to $500). It’s just like brisket. You can smoke your own if you know what you’re doing and have 8-10lbs for $60ish or go buy it by the pound for at a restaurant for $28-32.
  20. On their gifts website they have 24 packs of water for $28.99.
  21. I saw King crab at Costco for $20 a pound this past weekend. Routinely see it on sale at regular grocery store for $35-40. Restaurants are all $65-80.
  22. To answer the OP I believe Tracy’s closes before your ship leaves. As long as you are in line before they close you will get served. If you get back to 6:30pm you should be in line by 7. Is sail away at 9:00 or is that all aboard? If it’s sail away you could be cutting it close depending on how busy it is but should be okay. You just need to beeline it straight to Tracy’s and the. Straight to ship.
  23. Hard shell crab is almost always cooked and frozen often times right on the harvesting ship or right when they get back to port. Soft shell blue crab can be purchased live on the east coast. King and snow crab is almost always cooked and flash frozen.
  24. I’m looking forward to two nights at Samba during our B2B in Alaska. My plan is MDR on formal nights, each speciality restaurant twice and Tracy’s Crab Shack.
