  1. The government will have your $40 plus the port taxes. The businesses and workers who have nothing to do with it won’t get any of your money. You will deny yourself experiencing beautiful Bermuda. Cutting off your nose to spite your face. I kind of think though that you, would not be spending much anyway. If the $40 bothers you probably don’t spend much at ports.
  2. All owners have a vote on a bylaw change and they are difficult to pass. Your HOA owners must have had a real problem selling to potential buyers if it passed. As said by Navybankerteacher above too many renters brings property values down. The owners of those units spend minimal on upkeep. In my old condo building in Maryland those units were dated and had old appliances. Another problem was that many renters did not understand that the owner they were renting from was the landlord and would call the HOA office with demands when their HVAC was having problems, their appliances failed or disposal failed, all the unit owners responsibility. Speaking of Airbnb most of the violations of the policy on short term rentals were not owners putting units on Airbnb, it was renters! The absentee owners had no idea their tenents were using the units for Airbnb. The Maryland condo had someone checking AirBnb listings and when they found them, sometimes they were disguised but they were discovered by keywords or photos in the listing and also the condo had a full time concierges. Then they would call the owner who was usually surprised. You would not want to be the renter or the Airbnb renter. The Airbnb renter could show up and not be let in.
  3. The watch can mirror the iPhone. The iPhone does not mirror the watch. There is no reason though to have the watch in airplane mode.
  4. An umbrella policy is a liability policy. A good thing to have but not what you need for loss assesment coverage. Loss assesment is for something like a flood. It varies by state but for example in Maryland if there was a flood the association had to have policy that covered over $10,000 in damages but from 0 to 10000 the individual owner was responsible. So the loss assesment coverage would cover that gap. If there was a special assesment for damage to infrastucture in common areas from storm damage it could cover that. Your umbrella policy will cover you if you collide with a Porsche and your liability is more than your auto policy liability coverage. That is quite possible if you collide with an expensive auto. You probably have loss assesment coverage in your personal Homeowners policy but often the default amount is too low and condo owners find that out after they have a claim. The amount needed can vary so I won't make a suggestion but one thing you have to consider with your individual condo insurance coverage is that the what the condo policy covers is to bring it back to builders standard. If you made any improvements or renovations that won't be covered so you need to cover any improvements in you policy.
  5. I will be enjoying the beaches. If I wanted to enjoy a pool I could stay home and enjoy our resort deck pool and spa with real premium beverages. Plenty of made in Bermuda local arts and crafts to buy right at the Dockyard at the Clocktower mall and the Bermuda Craft market. But hey if you want to stay on the ship that's your choice. Wow, you spent $$$$ for a cruise and $80 is too much for you. Poor Baby. I doubt if a "frugal" person like you ever spends much in Bermuda anyway. You probably returned to the ship for every meal to get your moneys worth. The joke is on you though as they will have your $80 and port fees anyway. You will have cut off your nose to spite your face.....
  6. Most owners get their policy and the default is $1000 or $5000 which is not enough and don't question it.. In Maryland our HOA policy covered anything over $10,000 so I raised mine from $1000 to $10,000. In Texas when I was getting quotes some would only insure $5000 loss assesment which was not enough so I went witha company that would insure me higher. Here i have $25,000 loss assesment. It really does not cost much to raise the loss assesment coverage from the default.
  7. Party houses became a big problem The Arbnb restriction is pretty recent so time will tell.
  8. I have done that too. Left the phone at home walking or running. Also we have a pool resort deck and a spa here at my condo. A lot of times I don't take the phone. Some people do a family setup. Young kids get cellular Apple watches but not their own phones.
  9. It is pretty difficult to change bylaws because it is not a majority vote. In my Maryland condo it took 60% and in my Texas condo I beileve it is 66% of owners. And that percentage is of owners on the rolls not the percent of people who vote. Both condos already banned short term rental of less that 6 months from their declaration. Both allow longer rentals. Some condo associations have run into a problem of too many longer term rentals as some mortgage lenders want a majority of residents to be owner residents, and also owner residents prefer their nieghbors to be owner residents. So what some HOA's do is change the bylaws and limit rentals. I know a few in Maryland who limited the number to 30%. They got the bylaw change passed by grandfathering in previous owners so they could eventually reach their desired percentage by attrition. Then there is also local regulation. So my county in Maryland passed legislation licensing short term rentals and requiring that they had to be the owners primary residence. That pretty much ended short term rentals of houses or condos. There are plenty of short term rentals though as large multi family apartment building landlords have taken them up as they can rent their apartments for any length of time and pay to get the licenses.
  10. There are no shuttles to Clearwater or Tobacco. You can take a public bus to Clearwater but it only runs once an hour. I recommend a taxi. There are no public buses to Tobacco. You can take a taxi or walk from the town square. From the town square to Tobacco is about a 12 minute walk. Unfortunately the public ferry to St. George is suspended. Cruise passengers on NCL have a private ferry to St.George.
  11. Some only read the headlines and not the details. There is speculation that the Musk/TMobile announcement coming this time before satellites are launched is to pre-empt a rumored Apple satellite connectivity anouncement on September 7. The Apple rumor has been going around for a couple of years though and is only a rumor. https://www.macrumors.com/2022/08/26/apple-globalstar-iphone-14-satellite-rumor/
  12. Those are version 1 satellites that don’t support the future announced service. The version 2 satellites that will support the Starlink/T Mobile service have not been launched.
  13. Didn't you notice it is only for text, no data or voice when it launches in beta late 2023, and at low speeds? They have not even launched the satellites. Hotspot.......dream on. Service that could replace Voom will not be not soon, years away if ever.
  14. 5G mid band only reaches 1000 to 1500 feet from cell towers. Musk often makes promises that don't pan out.
  15. You are going to need clear sky to connect to the satellites. So you would have to go up to the upper outside decks to connect from your phone. These services will be best for rural areas and national parks. Cruise ships will be problematic. Lot of metal and obstruction.
  16. You will have to apply for a travel authorization. https://www.gov.bm/cruise-travel-authorisation If the ship is there three days the ship is docked and you can walk on and off at any time. There are cars but you can't rent them except 2 seater electric mini cars. Golf carts are only on golf courses. There are ferries, buses and taxis for getting around. Hamilton, St. George and the Dockyard are walkable but not in between. A good place to start research is the Bermuda Tourism website. https://www.gotobermuda.com
  17. Starlink RV uses a dish and you need open sky. From the dish you have to run a thick cable to the router.
  18. They have announced this now without any satellites in orbit for it for late 2023 or later because the rumor is Apple might announce something with satellites in a couple of weeks. The have title their event "Far Out.' Time will tell for either service, (if the Apple rumor is true) but the Starlink/TMobile service will be slow and mainly only text initially as would be what Apple is rumored to be offering. Neither will be offering data. Any game changing is years away.
  19. You are correct that you will be denied embarkation if you do not comply with Bermuda's protocols. The cruise lines won't quit going to Bermuda, on the contrary they fall over themselves for the right to stop in Bermuda. It is a desirable port for passengers and for the cruise lines. Bermuda is an island paradise and cruise lines are able to charge more for Bermuda cruises. It is also located in the right place for the cruise lines northeast US homeports. Both Royal Caribbean and NCL have contracts to call on Bermuda a certain number of times and they are not going to give up those berth rights to a competitor because of a few narscisists and whiners.
  20. If you don't get off the ship in Bermuda it would be like cutting off you nose to spite your face. You will have already paid the $40 and you would be skipping an island paradise. But hey if it makes you feel good go for it....
  21. Officialy you can get it stamped at the customs office on Front St. in Hamilton. You might be able to get stamped in your cruise terminal building if there is an officer there with a stamp.
  22. Condos don't want to be hotels and the FHA and some other mortgage lenders won't approve loans if short term rentals are allowed. Every condo I have lived in prohibits short term rentals in the bylaws of under 6 months. My old condo assoc. in Maryland fined a repeat offender almost $3000. After that the problem went away.
  23. Yes, you can bring your umbrella. It is a public beach. Someone I sailed with in a group brought a fold out sun canopy. You could bring your own chairs too.
  24. There is a ground transportation area between the two ship berths. The shuttles are pretty easy to find.
