Horizon 7/3 review, a year in the making...

You mentioned that some family were in the Family Harbor Suites. Since those suites are under the galley, did they have any problems with the noise in the middle of the night? Thank you and look forward to the remainder of your review. :)

Yes and no. We had 4 kids staying in them with their families, actually two in a balcony rooms and two in suites. Our oldest daughter is a very light sleeper and she mentioned it. The others just made fun of her, so if you sleep light, it could be an issue.

Sail away - this was to be our third sailing out of New York. Out of the dozen of so home ports we have sailed out of, it is easily my favorite. Spectacular views of New York, the Statue Liberty, Ellis Island, the Palisades, and the Verrazano Narrows bridge which connects Brooklyn to Staten island and is the longest span bridge in the Americas.

We typically head up the the top deck aft to view sail away and this was not to be an exception. What was an exception was the weather. As we made our way up, we could clearly hear the rain and then the thunder. As it worked out, we got to see everything except the bridge (early dinner). Here are some pics from the sailaway

I will hop on my soapbox (but for only a second), I was mentioning to one of my grand kids something about the Freedom tower. They asked me why it was called that and I then explained about the Word Trade Center and the cowards that attached our wonderful country. A family near us was obviously not happy with what I was saying and said "17 years, let it go" I told him what I thought about his comments as he hustled his family away. Did not see him the rest of the cruise.

Those of us that had early dining had to hustle down to dinner so we missed the Verranzano bridge, if someone wants shout out and I can produce a pic from an older cruise.

We ate in the Reflections dining room and we were escorted in and began the meal. There appeared to be something off kilter with the team, that manifested itself in little ways during the week. Certainly nothing to talk to them or the Maitre'd about but it was there. Maybe it sometimes takes a while to develop that in sync teamwork, not sure. I can pretty much know the MDR menu's from cruise to cruise but there were a couple of changes is apps and soups, the changes were welcomed by me.

Dear jimbo5544,

Thank you for your review.

NYC/NJ are great.

A fact not all know is that the North River which becomes the Hudson River near the passenger Cruise Ship Terminal is tidal too.

The Statue of Liberty and Ells Island are in New Jersey powered and gased by PEG :NYSE.

Do I understand correctly that the swing chairs have been removed from the patios of the Cabana Rooms?

They have due to an injury on the previous cruise. We were told they had to look into how to better attach them.

Can't believe someone had the nerve to say get over 9/11 in NYC of all places. My great grandmother still hates the Japanese for pearl harbor and she was 8 when it happened!

That new movie by Dewayne "The Rock" Johnson is so messed up.

I so agree with this and Jimbo. I was in Manhattan on 9/11 and trust me you never forget it. The smoke and smells and sirens and awfulness of it all.

On a more positive note, I noticed a number of fellow 8/28 cruisers above. Come over to our roll call and join the Meet & Mingle!

We are early birds, wish it were not true, but it is what it is. One of the reasons we enjoy the Havana rooms so much is they put out coffee on the corner of the Havana bar early. They also put out "lite" breakfast at Oceans Plaza which is close as well.

We walked around the corner and "our" coffee pots were there and we poured into to go cups and went back to our patio to enjoy before heading upstairs. It feels like this part of the ship is for you and the few near you. Def not trying to seem elitist, but want to convey the special feeling tied to these rooms.

We went up to breakfast on lido after a while and met some of our crew up there. For whatever reason, we always go the same area of ships on Lido (the most aft you get get on starboard side).

A word about the Horizon's Lido layout. There are two complete area replicated, one forward and one aft. There were two separate omelet stations (with 2 cooks in each one) that seemed to handle people going there reasonably well.

I will comment more on Horizon food options later.

Next up Cruise Critic and FB Meet and Greet

Thanks, I feel very strongly on the whole thing, my daughter worked in building one and we had a good friend in building two. Both survived (our daughter was traveling with us in this trip) but I will never forget, we owe it to those who are no longer here to do just that.

First, thanks for this review. Really enjoying it. Second, thank you for telling that shmoo what you thought of his comments. Yes, it was 17 years ago, but the images and memories will be forever branded into my brain.
