Can I get Cash onboard?

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but can you get change onboard. U.S. one dollar bills for tips for room service, etc.
Yes. Also change for laundry machines on ships that have them. Also you can exchange $US to/from the currency of the next/last port, but not at as good a rate as you will from a shore ATM.

Not being a denizen of the casino, I'm wondering how this works - does the amount you get in cash get charged to your shipboard account? If so, this would be a good way to get extra cash to use at ports where they take U.S. money.

See the post just before yours. It is a way to get $US, and it is a charge to your on-board account plus 3%.

You can change travelers checks into cash at no charge, also foreign currency based on B of A's exchange rates which are always pretty decent, but you're on the Veendam, isn't that South America, remember Argentine pesos are worthless outside Argentina....

Pax were using casinos like banks.

 

On RCI pax were actually taking large amounts of cash out onboard in order to rack up double points on their RCI credit cards. They would then pay off those charges, once they got home, with the money they took out from the casino.

 

RCI caught on to that scam and put a stop to it.

 

I imagine most ships have tacked on the 3% as a deterrent to pax using the casinos as their personal bankers.

We brought $500 in cash with us, more than enough.

I can tell you that on some of my cruises, I pulled money off of my debit card. I have my paychecks direct deposit and often want some extra money(esp when I went over my port budget a few times). Also, with me cruising solo, I prefer to just get money on the ship because that's safer to me.

I normally carry enough cash for my needs, but it's a nice option to obtain more.

The way it works now on the Veendam is put your key card into a slot machine, follow the instructions as to password etc and you can load your key card with at least $100 (I didn't try for more) When you are finished gambling on the slot machines take your key card to the cashier and he/she will give you in US dollars, on what is left on the card....There is no 3% service charge for this....there is a charge if you want chips.

So, you can load $100 or whatever amount on the card ... then go directly to the casino cashier to cash out?

I'm glad you can read between the lines.........yes you can do that but I would use a few quarters and spend 10 minutes in the casino, so you may have a buck or two less or a buck or two more that what you put on the card....let's not alert them of what you are doing.... one time doing this would be OK, but if you can't spend all your OBC and you do it several times....

I wasn't sure I would have time to go to the bank to convert my Canadian $ to American $ and to use my Canadian Debit card in an America ATM the stick me with a service fee. I was able to get to the bank today so should be fine on the cash front now.

3% of $100.00 is only $3.00, so if you gamble for 10 minutes, you may lose more than that! I have gotten money from my room account at the 3% rate as I ran out of cash for extra tips on one of my cruises. It was less expensive to pay the 3% than to use the debit machine with all the extra charges that are tacked on from my bank.
