Veendam Formal Nights

I was on the May 2nd cruise. Saw less than 5 tuxes, mostly dark suits for men, as for women - there were a few gowns (i was one on the first formal night), cocktail dresses or just "nice" dresses or tops with skirts/pants.

Lots of tuxes on the 5/9 sailing. All aged men from two very adorable little boys to elderly gentlemen were sporting tuxes. I would say about 1/4-1/3 particularly those dining later had tuxes- which is higher than I have seen recently.

Some gentleman also work tux jacket, shirt, bowties with bermuda shorts, knee socks, dress shoes.

One gentleman (in the casino) forgot to put his bermuda shorts on over his silk boxer shorts......he got quite a few giggles :D and a few shocked looks, as he made his way from the cashier to the slot machines. Me thinks someone had a few too martini's!! I only wish I had taken a picture.

A dark suit works if you don't feel like wearing a tux.

Not sure if mine are the two Laura is talking about, as they were in tuxes, but my husband was in just a dark suit. I also had a formal gown on.

Attached is one of our formal portraits. I'll share my take on the ships photography: Very expensive- $40 for a sheet that includes an 8x10, 5x7, and two almost wallet sizes. If you bought 3 sheets, you got one free. The smaller composite photos were $20 each. I did ask to have the sheets I purchased reprinted, as they were scratched and dented from the displays. When we returned home I noticed that there was a line from the printer through the top of each picture. Not noticable enough to ruin the prints, but still noticable.

I also thought that they were trying to be very "artsy" or something with some of the camera angle and shots. The pics looked more like something from a magazine shoot, than a formal portrait.

Gorgeous Family Portrait!!! Thanks for sharing. Very nice memory for you and the boys when they grow up and can appreciate how extremely lovely their mom was!

Yes, your two were the ones I was talking about!! They were absolutely adorable!!

You were down the hall from my parents room. Were you in an S category suite? If so how was your sofa bed?

I thought the pictures were pricey as well! While we did not sit for a formal picture (the 1st cruise we haven't) we purchased a formal night pic of my GM which was 19.00

I forgot to mention in our group my hubby wore his tux, my dad a black suit and my friends father wore a gray suit, I think (he only joined us for the first formal night, as he was under the weather on the 2nd so I am not positive of the color).

Yes, we were in 002. We never pulled out the sofa bed, the boys slept on each end of it, with a pillow separating them. The space was really great for us, since naps were needed daily, plus the fact that my poor husband was ill for 2 days...oh well. We had breakfast on the verandah every morning (except the last).

I've noticed on both HAL and Princess that the earlier you dine, the fewer tuxes. The late diners get more fancy and look great, but, as we eat early, DH was tired of being in a tux at a table where the others looked like they were dressed for church, not a formal dinner. This last cruise he left the tux at home and it worked well for him.

if it were me, i would go for the bermuda short route. they shouldn't deny you entry since in bermuda that is considered proper formal.

That's what I did one night, and didn't get turned away.

Have to say, even got plenty of compliments. ;)

The gentleman in the the shorts is Mr David Hampshire. he is the owner of The English Sports Shop on Front Street. Probably best place to by real Bda shorts.

Now for formal nights.... the jacket should be single breasted and WHITE. Shirt should be white with normal collar... no wings, the tie should be simple and black. No cummerbund! Shorts MUST be BLACK... NO COLOURS! Socks must be golf hose type ie up to the knee and shoes must be black.

Simple and easy and COMFORTABLE.... less weight than a full tux or even a suit. It makes perfect sense and perfect cruise wear. HAL should suggest it for passengers on the Bermuda cruises. Might just catch on.

Which night on the cruise do they do the 'formal' night?

I just got off the 5/16 cruise. Formal nights were Monday and Friday. I saw a few tuxes and gowns but mostly dark suits, a few lighter suits and a lot of pretty dresses. Only one or two couples were out of "uniform" wearing.. gasp:eek:..

shorts and not Bermudas.

Hoping as the weather gets warmer, we will see alittle less formal wear on the bermuda cruises. But know i will fit in with my dresses and pant suits!

Since formal nights are at sea, temperature shouldn't be an issue.

Enjoy Bermuda!
