Riviera Goes Total Non Smoking

World20

Recommended Posts

It's time Oceania! New ship might be a good way to introduce this concept. Count us on board if you do this.

It will never happen. Oceania is very restricted on smoking as is. It would cut more out than it would add from a sales point of view.

I am truly puzzled by World20 and the fact that IF Oceania went No Smoking he would book.

Where on earth can you actually travel that offers this ? Every Hotel I visit, while restricting smoking inside, usually has groups of smokers outside by the entrance or in a garden.

Life must really get dull for World ...........

Carnival once had a completely nin-smoking ship...When they introduced the Carnival Paradise, the policy was "No Smoking" ANYWHERE on the ship...of course, after awhile, they abandonned the policy and conformed to what they had on the rest of the line...BUT, OF COURSE, we are talking Carnival...and their typical target audience is a beer drinking, chain smoking low-life (Don't jump on me Carnival fans, I am obviously just talking about the stereotype here)...Though it would not work that well on Carnival--where the guests also ignore their rules on alcohol and smuggle cases of beer onboard, I have always thought it could work for more upscale lines...

The city I live in, Calabasas, California, made national headline news a few years back when it became the first city in the US to ban smoking...To this day, it is against the law to smoke in any public place, indoors or out...It is absolutely wonderful to go to a restaurant and not face a gauntlet of toxic smoke on your way in or out...or be able to sit and enjoy a meal or a coffee in one of our outdoor cafes without breathing in the smoke of nearby smokers...

I say "GREAT!" Whether or not they think they are being somehow "courteous" by blowing their smoke in another direction or by smoking in designated areas, the truth is that smoke does not know to remain in those designated areas...and the fumes and odors tend to permeate fabrics, carpets, etc. To an asthmatic like me, they are actually a physical danger...even the odors from tobacco smoked long before I enter a room can affect my breathing...

They also create a fire hazard...

I would say to my smoking friends, consider this a great opportunity to help yourself kick the habit...

For everyone else, "HALLELUJAH!"

I believe that Renaissance, the "precurser" to Oceania was non-smoking and the line went under. Carnival pulled the plug on non-smoking on one of their ships, because they did not make enough money. Face it, smokers drink more and spend more in the casino, so I am grateful for lines like Oceania who are willing to forgo some of the profits by making smoking a "no-no" in so many parts of the ship.

Surely we can put up with "the addicts" in the limited areas where smoking is now permitted. :p

I would gladly book a non smoking cruise on an Oceania ship.

Oceania is not Carnival.... the demographics are quite different.

Most people on O do not smoke .....it may exclude some past cruisers and that would be a problem.

Maybe something Oceania could investigate by way of their comment cards. :D

We also have no smoking in public buildings and now the smokers cannot smoke within specific distance ( I think it is 15 M) of the entrance of a public building so less & less you see smokers here.

I do not think it was because of the smoking policy ;)

I am sure it was not the only reason, but contributed. Personally, I think it was because they charged way too little for such a great product. I sure miss those days.

I don't believe it entered into the equation. Can you say 9/11 and probably over extended financially.

If someone is so sensitive to smoke from cigarettes/cigars/pipes, then why even go out of doors. Tell me diesel fumes are less onerous than tobacco smoke.

What little smoke we encounter on O is no big thing. For those who abhor being around tobacco smoke, what do you when you go ashore in Europe and Asia? Complain to the local authorities?

This thread reminds me of a funny story. The first time we went to London, about 20 years ago, we asked to sit in the non-smoking section in a restaurant. The hostess looked at us strangely and then said she would sit us by the door , so fresh air could come in whenever the door opened. We sure have come a long way.

You're right about that Lyn! How about building too many ships too fast and discounting too many fares. (Although we benefitted from the latter ...)

I loved Ren but their business plan needed some work.

But let us also NOT forget that timing contributed to their demise. Ren was due to meet with the bankers on 9/12/01 as I have been informed ... and after what happened on 9/11/01 ... well ... it was just too late.

Personally, I am one who would be delighted if Oceania cut out the limited smoking that now exists ... but even when Ren didn't permit any smoking at all there were people who violated the rules. I'd rather have those few legal spots if it means my neighbor isn't smoking on his veranda ...

(Not that there are any quarantees about that ...)

The one and only time we went to Lutece in NYC we asked for no-smoking (this was way before the smoking ban took over in NYC) and the hostess gave us that same look. "We can't tell people they can't smoke", she said.

Her compromise was to put us in a small room with only four tables and we were the only occupants at the time we arrived.

By the time we left, yes, there were smokers.

But as I say ... this was MANY years ago.

And we never went back. Could that be why Lutece disappeared, just as Renaissance did????:)

Give or take a Menendez or two......

Kidding!

I don't think they've lived here for a few years...

Of course, we now have Britney Spears living around the corner from us and I'm not sure that's much better... ;)

Juli...Agreed...

What part of town do you live in? I'm in CPE on Malaga...

I live in a small gated(not guard) community right across from CPE.

I haven't seen Britney Spears around(I think she is renting a home up at the Oaks)....but I do see the kardashians around town filming.

It is great to live in a non smoking town!!

Ahhh...I know where you live...off the circle to the right! Pretty close...

Britney IS renting a house in the Oaks...From my house, if you turn off Consuelo onto Normans and follow it up over the rise, it passes through an emergency gate and turns into Prado del Grandioso...she's right were that hits Parkway Calabasas inside the Oaks gates...

We used to have Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson even closer to us...right inside our gate on Lorena just off Paseo Primario...before Nick bought the house, we almost bought that lot and built there...but we backed out--didn't like the way we'd have to position the house on the lot...then Nick bought it and they taped their show there...Of course, Nick sold it after the divorce...

We run into a few show biz folks all the time...It's a fun town to live in...

BTW, ever notice in the opening to "Weeds", they use aerial shots of our neighborhood?

You tend to see the show biz folks at The Commons.

Haven't watched Weeds.

Did you attend UCLA? We are Bruin fans also.

Lutece closed for the same reason La Cote Basque, La Caravelle, Le Cygne and other high end French restaurants closed....because the public's dining habits have changed and formal restaurants with exorbitant prices are no longer in fashion. Even at PerSe the feeling is more casual now. It had nothing to do with smoking.

Ooops! I was going to ask if anything I said indicated that Lutece closed because of the smoking policy years ago ... but I went back to see exactly what I'd said, and yes, I can see why you thought that was what I was saying.

But my last sentence was tongue in cheek. No, I don't think Lutece died because of the smoking policy!

(Maybe indirectly it did ... people like us didn't go back when smokers were catered to. But I don't even really think that was the case!)

I do have to say that back then we did go to several of these toney restaurants and our experience was that none of them were so "pro" smokers as was Lutece. But we didn't go back to them either ...

Which proves your point!

It's very different in NYC now ...
