There are plenty of studies that show second hand smoke is harmful. You can reject those studies if you want, I won't argue with you. But, you still have not demonstrated how my going out in the sun with no sunscreen increases your exposure to the sun. Until you do your argument doesn't make a lick of sense.

 

I am not arguing that your going out in the sun increases my exposure to the sun. What I'm saying is worry about what you can control (your own actions) and quit blaming others for things you can't.

For the record, I have no problem with smokers who play by the rules -- just don't try to justify yourself with silly arguments.

yes i heard that they are losing millions,i used to smoke and drank much more than i do now,non smokers dont spend as much at bars,so thats why they are cutting back on all areas ,the non smoking brigade have shot themselfs in the foot. now i dont smoke i save £175(english) a month on the tax,but some one has got to pay for that somewhere.(the non-smokers) if every one in the uk gave up every one in the country would have to pay 15% more income tax,they soon moan at that. yes and its true british pubs are going bust since the smoking ban 200,000 have lost there jobs because smokers are staying at home and buying there drink from the supermarkets, and buying drink at hlf the price.(so they can buy more cigs) ha ha ha.

BF smokes, but I'm hardly a cheerleader. I wish he didn't smoke and I think it's a deadly and disgusting habit, but it's a LEGAL habit, and I don't think he should be banned from doing it if it's legal.

 

My mom died of skin cancer. I will probably die of skin cancer. I know what i need to do to try to prevent it. I don't think that people should be banned from tanning, nor should there be a tax on tanning beds to try to get people not to do it.

 

I understand that second-hand smoke affects other people, and that it's different from the sun, and in an ideal world no one would smoke, but non-smokers have so many more options than smokers that I think that all the complaining about the smokers taking over the ship gets to be a bit much. Pick what's most important to you on a cruise (being able to bring booze on the ship; food; smoking/non-smoking; shows; etc) and go with it. If lack of smoke is that important to you, you have options.

Well said. It is a drug addiction and should be treated the same way as heroin or cocaine. The only difference is H&C affect the person indulging in it but smoke affects everyone around it.

Uh?!? As far as I know cigarette smokers do not thieve or murder in order to get their "fix". I know whom I'd rather bump into on a dark night.

Not many options. If you like to dance latin music Boleros is your only option and on the Oasis it was a non smoker nightmare. If you like to go to the Casino, the non smoking half doesnt work either. I read somewhere that having a non smoking area in the Casino was like saying that you can pee in one half of a pool. If you have a smoker on the cabin next to you, then you can't enjoy your balcony. We tried Celebrity this year and loved their smoking policy, and believe me the Casinos were full and people drank a lot too. Our only problem with Celebrity was that our kids were bored to death. RCCL is suppose to be a family oriented cruise line and should have a healthier environment for families.

Do your kids go in the bars and the casinos? I would imagine that most/all places your kids go are smoke free on RCCL. Even if you go off the ship, you're going to possibly be exposed to smoke. Are you going to walk around in bubbles to avoid that everywhere you go?

Bluegirlum, my children don't go to bars or casinos. Do yours? or if you don't have children, will you take your children to bars or casinos? Have you cruised on the Oasis? The smoke from Boleros ends up in the Promenade. Also, RCCL schedules some dance classes, popular among children, like the Michael Jackson dance lessons in Boleros. The lady that was given the class (3:00PM) asked the "considerate smokers" to stop smoking because many families were trying to take the class, but they didn't want to leave.

We don't walk around in bubbles, but we don't smoke, our friends don't smoke and smoking is not allowed in restaurants, bars or casinos where we live. I think that the last time that my children were "exposed" to cigarette smoke was probably on our last cruise. Am I a bad parent because I avoid their exposure to smoke???? Will you expose your children to pornography?, to drugs? As a parent you will decide what's good or bad to your children. I'm the child of a smoker who died from a cancer that was probably related to his habit. Back when I was growing up people didn't know the effects of second hand smoke, today we know better.

I'm old enough to remember flying on a plane with a smoking area, I'm confident that most cruise lines will join the 21st century and limit the inside smoking in a near future.

I have cruised on Oasis, and did not notice any smoke from Boleros. Actually, I thought Boleros was non-smoking when we were on it--but I could be wrong on that or maybe it changed. We didn't go in there at all, but did spend a lot of time on the Promenade, and in our experience didn't notice any smoke. But that was us. I am very surprised to hear that they would hold something for children in an area with smoking--I didn't realize that happened.

 

I absolutely remember the smoking section in the back of the planes, and I am so glad that we don't have to endure that anymore. I grew up travelling in Europe, so I was around smokers all the time. I guess I just don't notice it anymore unless it's blatantly in my face. I know I can't control what other people do, so I just worry about what I can control, and would do the same with my children if I am lucky enough to have them some day. I guess I can try to keep them away from stuff, but if they are exposed to it, they're exposed to it. The world's not pure.

Carnival Cruise Line has updated their smoking policy and has made their position clear: Smoke in the stateroom or on your balcony, and you — as well as everyone in your stateroom — may be disembarked at the next stop.

While the policy officially goes into effect on December 1, the information on their web pages have already been updated to reflect the change.

 

What Carnival’s Smoking Policy Says

In the past, Carnival — like other cruise lines — has said that those who smoke in their staterooms or on the balconies might be charged a fairly substantial cleaning fee. Now, however, they are taking things a step further with a much stricter policy which could have dire consequences not only for the offending party, but those they are traveling with.

On the Carnival web page specifically devoted to smoking-related issues, the question is asked: “What happens if a guest is caught smoking in a stateroom or balcony?”

The response: “They will be assessed a $500 charge, per violation, on their Sail & Sign account. Information on this charge is included in Section 8 of Carnival’s Cruise Ticket Contract. The assessment of this charge does not allow a guest to continue smoking in his/her stateroom.” This is an important thing to note, as it means that simply paying the fee does not allow the person in question to continue to violate the policy.

 

The site continues: “If a guest is found to be in violation of our smoking policy, all guests in the stateroom may be disembarked from the vessel and risk not being allowed to sail on Carnival in the future. Guests will be responsible for all financial charges and expenses to return home, and no refund of unused cruise fare will be provided.”

Looking to avoid conflicts between smokers and non-smokers, Carnival goes on to advise that if someone is violating the rules, fellow passengers should contact guest services as opposed to confronting the situation directly. “This will help avoid uncomfortable situations between guests,” the website explains.

I hope not. As a non-smoker who grew up in a smoking family, I have no problem hanging out in smokey casino. I know my clothing may have a smokey smell aterwards. Hope that won't get me in trouble/booted off the ship.

 

Most likely, the cruise line is hoping that the threat of being booted off the ship is enough of a deter people from smoking.

 

Have there been reports of people being fined? Usually when there is a complaint of smoking, the offending party has finished the smoke by the time security arrives.
